Yet he could tell, simply by the look in her wild eyes, that saying as much would only tangle him deeper into the General's snare and her fingernails already felt like they were going to draw blood where they were digging into his face. He stopped fighting against her and resigned himself, though the look he settled on her was nothing short of willing her to spontaneously combust.
"I rather like my life, thanks," the words were spoken between clenched teeth as her free hand pressed against his sternum, feeling the touch sharply above his thin shirt. But now the man behind her was talking, asking things in a calmer voice that drew his attention past the venomous woman in his face. The tone he used reminded him of a teacher, disappointed in a pupil he had expected more of, and he had to wonder what he'd said to convince at least this one that he was more than a waste of energy.
"It's a matter of what we consider worthwhile. If you want me to apply myself, give me a ******** goal that isn't hunting down civilians for pointless amounts of energy or typing up shitty handwritten notes." The bright eyes had flickered back to the woman now, as if he were afraid to take his eyes off of her too long - even if he was hopeless to stop any advance in his civilian guise.
