Cadmus had been spending a good majority of his time recently within the Terra Expanse, primarily Kaiatasel. His world had taken a major shift when he had ventured into the outer edges of the Gaili clan territory during one of his families training exercises where his parents would leave him mostly alone and he had to find his way back to Kaiatasel a few years ago. Since then he had spent more and more time talking with others who seemed to have a broader view of the world--but only when he wasn't being watched by his family. Especially his grandmother. His father, Eryx, wasn't entirely behind his grandparents in their views on others but he also never openly disagreed with them either. His mother, Fatin, well she was hard to describe. His mother was always on his case on looking presentable, strong and utter perfection. Fatin was more concerned with one's looks and outward appearances which was also something she pushed onto Cadmus. Did he enjoy it? No. He had a hard enough time of making sure his eyes were dotted and x's were crossed when around his grandparents.
The boy sighed with exasperation as he fell backwards on his bed, his legs dangling off the side. The more time he spent with others the more he realized his family was unique, but not in a good way. Cadmus had always had a hard time with the ideals of his family growing up. Why was he supposedly better than everyone else? His family accomplishments didn't really have anything to do with him and to be honest, they didn't have too many. When they came to Kaiatasel it didn't take long for the young boy to pick up the whispers that floated nearby whenever he or his family was around. Look at those upturned noses. It's hard to believe they can see around them. Were just one of the things that had drifted into his ears. He felt incredibly embarrassed whenever he was made to walk around. Then his grandmother would parade him around to those few people who shared her visions of the world. "That boy is going to grow up strong and will instill fear in the other clans." She would boast. Why did he want the other clans to fear him? Weren't they all Dovaa? Allies even? His mother would do the same, only she boasted on his looks.
"Why is this so hard?" Cadmus whispered to himself, rolling over onto his side and pounding a fist into the bedding. He didn't care if it hurt or not because his heart hurt twice as bad. Recently, Cadmus had come to the conclusion that he couldn't live up to his families expectations and more importantly--didn't want to. However, he knew once he told his family his decision he would not be allowed to remain here. Where would he go? Cadmus wasn't close to anyone beyond his family, even in his own clan, and beyond the time when he was eight--he hadn't encountered too many outsiders either. He was curious about the clan his father had come from. It wasn't often that Eryx would talk about his homeland but when he did Cadmus could see there was a bit of fond memories held there in his eyes. He knew his father was happy with his decision and was beyond head-over-heels for his mother but he couldn't help but wonder if his father missed the home he had left. At the time his father had been spiteful and till to this day would not speak to his parents. Cadmus wondered about those grandparents. Were they kind? Did they believe the things Onslow and Mahah did? He wanted to meet them very badly but once again--he was afraid. What if they wouldn't talk to him? What if they shunned him or worse?
A few tears fell down his cheeks before he'd gotten the chance to wipe them away. It would be very bad if anyone saw him crying. His grandfather, Onslow, would make him sit on his knees for hours in a kowtow position. His grandmother would smack him hard on the cheeks at least and his parents would turn a blind eye or assist when needed. Firani didn't cry. "I don't want to do this anymore." He whimpered, sitting up on his bed. Once he was certain his tears were dried and that no evidence of it could be seen he took a deep inhale. He was going to have to do it soon. Cadmus had thought ahead and packed a bag that he had hidden under some rocks just outside of the clan borders. It hadn't been a whether or not he was leaving, it was when. It took far more courage than he felt he had for the boy to lift himself off his bed and lift his head high. Some habits were going to be hard to break.
It was time to face his family.
