New guilt wracked Lorelei, thinking of her mothers searching sharks' gullets looking for her body. Just how upset would they be? How much trouble would she be in when she got back. She almost said no then, but one more look at Rao changed her mind. She'd made a promise, and she was going to help.

"All right. We can go today." She smiled, attempting to seem chipper about it. It did seem like a storm might be brewing, and she could always blame that on being late getting back if she needed to. Storms were a good excuse for time spent away.

"Good," sighed Ninetails-as-Rao. "You don't know how much this means to me. If there is anything I can ever do to repay you, I will see to it that it is done." That was another of many untruths.

"But we must hurry now. Come with me, I will show you the way."

~~~
Ninetails led Lorelei along the beach. She had the impression that Lorelei wasn't used to walking on land. She found the most inane things interesting and dipped herself in the water every now and then to keep her skin damp. Ninetails put on their best impression of patience with it all, though they wanted to bite the kelpi whenever there was an interruption.
They could tell that Lorelei had some misgivings. To distract her, they told an ancient story from their homeland, one where a lion fought a dragon to defend a small island nation. That seemed to work well, and before long, they had finally arrived. They stood on a familiar patch of sand, the one that Ninetails had first crawled onto after that fateful shipwreck. Squinting, they could just barely see the tip of the mast of the sunken ship emerging from the waves.
"There it is," they breathed, eyes fixed on the resting place of the fox rods.
The walk gave Lorelei all too much time to think. She thought about what her moms would think, not being able to find her that night. Each time she dipped herself into the water to soothe her scaled skin she hoped she might see a spirit-touched dolphin dancing in the waves. She could have passed a message along to a dolphin and sent it to her parents... but no such convenient dolphin appeared. It looked like she had no choice but to worry them and live with the consequences of it.
She suspected that Rao might have noticed her discomfort. Rao seemed very perceptive, after all. She told a story to fill their silence, a fascinating one where a dragon from the sea was murdered by a monster on the land. Lorelei wondered if she was rooting for the right character in the story but didn't ask.
After what seemed like forever, they stopped. Lorelei's eyes didn't work so well above the water as Rao's and she didn't see the wreck she was talking about. Still, she had no reason to suspect that Rao would point her at a wreck that wasn't there.
"All right," she said with a small determined smile. "Could you tell me about your rods again, so I know what to look for?"
"Of course," replied Ninetails. She described the rods and their last known location to her, being sure to give as much detail as she knew. They hated being forthright and honest with anyone, but this was a situation where information was necessary.
"Good luck," she murmured to the kelpi, watching her prepare to leave.
"Hopefully I won't need luck," said Lorelei, though there could actually be many dangers in exploring a wreck. Kelpis did need to breathe air, after all, and if she became trapped underwater she could easily drown. Not only that, but sharks and some even less savory creatures sometimes made their homes in places of death like a wreck...
"I'll be back in a flash with your rods!" With that, she was off into the water.
Uzoamaka walked along the beach. She was taking something of a vacation, and this was rare for her. She liked to work and keep herself busy. Normally the caravan would be back out in the desert sands again by now, but they had put in for some major work on their wagons. The upgrades wouldn't be done for another week or so, and so she had gone on a bit of a side trip.
It had been ages since she'd seen the beach. She was so used to the desert that the sight of water next to the sand was a bit of a shock. She dipped her hooves in, enjoying the cool feeling. A gentle breeze blew by and the acrid scent of fox reached her. Apparently some had made the beach their home. She smiled, looking up to try to spot them.
Instead of a fox, she saw a mare. She paused, her heart beginning to race a little faster. Something was wrong with that mare.
Ninetails was waiting. It hated waiting. It felt so helpless while Lorelei was diving in the wreck. This was a time when it could do nothing. There was literally nothing it could do that would make the kelpi any more or less likely to bring back the fox rods now that the plan had come to this point.
It looked around for something to eat to break its tension. Belatedly, it realized that it couldn't truly tear into something as it was now. The Rao robes would be spoiled if it tried something more than just mussels.
As it waited, seething in uncertainty and aggravation, it let its guard down. Its one remaining eye grew sharp and vulpine. It let its tails move more freely, their masks seeming to scan the horizon for threats. It could no longer force itself to pretend to be anything but a monster when there was no one around to fool and when it was so tense and helpless.
Of course, that was when the other soquili appeared. Though Ninetails still wore its robes, it did not have the look of an innocent passerby anymore.
The wreck was deeper than it looked. Lorelei had to surface twice for air before she even managed to figure out the best way into it. It was pretty clear that this was a different sort of boat that usually came by the Kawani waters. Its lines were all wrong, and it had a different number of masts. Lorelei had no skill in reading human letters but could still tell that the ones carved into the side were of a language she'd never seen before. The boat reminded her of the look of Rao. It was clear that they were cut from the same cloth of a shared homeland.
Curious, she finally made her way inside.
There were bones, but that wasn't surprising. Human bones didn't frighten her. Her mother Isenath did occasionally drown humans, after all. It was when she saw the seaweed encrusted skull of a soquili that she grew more somber. She realized that it should have been obvious to her that soquili would have drowned with the ship as well, but somehow it didn't occur to her until this very moment that Rao hadn't been the only equine passenger on board.
"Skinwalker!" Uzoamaka hissed the words to herself like they were poison. Her ears flicked back and her front legs stomped, but she was otherwise frozen in place. She had seen a skinwalker before. Once when she was young, barely more than a filly, a skinwalker had attacked the human tribe she traveled with. She had been useless then, unable to even raise the alarm. Now she instantly travelled back to that time. What should she have done back then? What could she have done?
And what was she supposed to do now?
The timing couldn't have been worse. Ninetails waited for its most treasured possession and knew it would only get it back if the illusion was upheld. Now, here was a random unicorn that saw it for what it truly was. If Lorelei came back while the unicorn was still around, its cover would be blown and the kelpi could run off with its precious fox rods.
Confounded and enraged, Ninetails let out a hoarse growl and lowered its head threateningly.
Lorelei lingered by the skull longer than she should have. When she reached the surface she had to greedily gulp in air, having strained her lungs to the point of burning. As she panted, she took a glance towards the shore. Her eyes could only see so far in the dry air, but she thought she could make out the blob of Rao's waiting form. Strange, it almost looked like there was another soquili with her.
She squinted, but the image didn't grow any sharper. Figuring that Rao could use the company, she dived back under the water again without concern.
Fear and tension filled every bone and muscle of Uzoamaka's body. A sharp equine whinny escaped from her throat and she pointed her horn at the walker.
As if that would help her when the beast attacked. I might die, she thought dizzyingly. Some dazed part of her brain realized that these might be some of her last moments breathing on this earth. This was what horror stories were whispered about. This was the sad story that one told about a friend of a friend who had been killed by skinwalker attack. Against all odds, she was the one who had come across this monster. She was the one that was now staring her own death in the face and sickeningly unable to do much else with herself.
She was frozen, and she was afraid.
The veil was lifted that had previously shrouded Ninetails' true form. Now it raised itself up, nine tails arraying in a fan around it. When it wasn't making itself small it looked huge, evil presence almost visible in the air around it. Now, the hood that covered its head was not any feminine decoration. It cast a shadow over Ninetails' face, only broken by the glinting of demonic eyes.
"You are a fool." Its voice could not have been more different from Rao's dulcet tones. Now it spoke with a voice that was the scrape of razors against wet hide, neither male nor female in its terror.
"If you interfere in my business here, I will feed your soul to the spirits in my tails." The masks on its tails were painted woods, and yet their eyes seemed to find the unicorn. With each mask bobbing up and down, Ninetails seemed surrounded by a host of demons.
The demon didn't have to ask twice. Uzoamaka cried out, turned, and ran. She had never been so frightened in her life. She bolted, barely daring to even breathe. She dared to look behind her, one of the bravest things she'd ever done. The monster wasn't following her... yet.
She ran more. She ran until her muscles screamed, and then kept running. She had thought she had seen two eyes in the monster's face, but she belatedly realized it had only been one. One terrible eye, and one hidden by bangs. Somehow, she didn't think there was a second eye underneath there. She hated herself for her cowardice, and yet, what else could she do? The skinwalker was obviously on some sort of dark mission, but she was powerless to stop it. She would tell the next soquili she saw about what had happened... that was the best she could manage.
Ninetails glared balefully after the fleeing mare, wishing that it could pursue and put the pathetic thing out of its misery. Any other time it would have. Now, it had to wait. It paused until the unicorn was far gone, out of sight and out of hearing. Then it composed itself again. It made itself small again, softening its stance and drawing its tails partially underneath the train of its kimono. Once it was Rao again, she looked out over the sea.
And not a moment too soon. The striped kelpi was swimming back in her direction, head bobbing up and down, hidden and then revealed by the waves. Ninetails tensed. They couldn't yet tell if the kelpi had the fox rods. Their whole body drew tight. Even a powerful walker like themselves was lost in anxiety for a long moment as they tried to determine what had happened.
And then, they saw it. The fox rods! Losing their composure for a moment, they lit up in devilish delight. Soon they would have their most precious possession back. Soon, they would be complete.
