He tried not to grin in bitter amusement when she said how she thought music should be expressed through emotion and not one piece after another of the same thing. That was the very reason he hadn’t won any competitions, although he knew he could if he really tried to play the piece exactly as written. It was just so boring like that. If anything, he was hoping to make a name for himself for his ability to play through emotion than as if a recording.
When she came back and explained how she hadn’t really thought about getting hurt, he just nodded, not wanting to show too much concern when she didn’t think it was that big a deal. He waited as she got up to refill her drink, habitually tapping the tips of his fingers against the table. It wasn’t the same as actually playing, but he could hear the music in his head. There was little time for him to write these days, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t still thinking about it.
As for his plans, he let out a small laugh. “I’m just trying to get by right now… not really big plans for the future,” he said, repressing a sigh. “Well, I don’t want to keep you if you’re done. And I’ve got some homework I need to finish,” he explained with a small smile as he moved to stand from the booth. “It was good running into you, though.”
