Unlike Kursha, Zeffer's intention had not been to submerge the greenblood, but to continue the brutal assault he'd already started. Using the water to his advantage hadn't even crossed his mind, and he didn't even seem to care about the possible hazard of using his weapons in such a setting. He snarled as he flailed his baton, intent on getting another solid shot in, and landed several weak hits against Kursha's soaked jacket and horns instead. Unfortunately, the muck was thicker in some areas than others, and as Kursha fell, Zeffer went down too, grappling desperately as he lost his footing and flopped to his side. As his free hand sunk into the mire, it prevented him from righting himself as quickly as he might have. That was all it took for the tables to turn again...

Kursha seized his opportunity, and Zeffer let out a roar of agonized rage that was swiftly cut off, once his head was shoved into the murky water. The knee grinding into his back was enough to make him see stars, and he froze up for a moment, body stiff as a board, hands bracing into the mud in an attempt to push himself back up. It wasn't going to end this way. He whipped back in a blind attempt to deliver another hit, but his efforts were quickly foiled as Kursha lashed out with his foot. When Zeffer lost his grip on the weapon, his thrashing began anew, and he screamed into the mud as he attempted to buck Kursha off. Normally it wouldn't have been a very difficult task; the greenblood was smaller and lighter, but between the mud and the copious amount of injuries he had sustained, Zeffer was having a ******** of a time getting loose.

It didn't take long for the blueblood to expel the air in his lungs. In moments, his thrashing had gained the frantic desperation of a trapped beast, and he twisted himself this way and that, trying without success to find purchase in the mud. Bracing his feet, he tried to buck upwards again, to no avail. A growing lightheadedness suddenly gripped his thinkpan, an almost dizzy feeling that threatened to overcome his rage, even with the blood pounding in his ears. His thoughts swam, touching on his friends, the ones who were counting on him. Akko...Maneki.

Zeffer grit his teeth. He'd be damned if he let a sniveling traitor like Kursha be the one to end his life. Without thinking, he pulled his arms in before shoving himself up, every muscle straining as he enacted a colossal effort to free himself. His arms locked, his back arched...and then, something bizarre happened. A loud crackling noise sounded, and all at once the blueblood felt a strange tingling ripple through his body, something he couldn't fathom, and immediately blamed on lack of oxygen. In his submerged state, he failed to see the sparks of angry electricity that had begun to dance across his form. The world began to spin, and his body shook beneath the strain of his efforts. In an instant, the energy flowed into the greenblood, delivering a shock more powerful than his batons could ever muster.

The blueblood had more strength left in him than Kursha anticipated. Snarling, Kursha put the last of his energy into holding Zeffer's head underwater, even as the blueblood got his arms beneath him. He simply did not have the mass to keep the older troll pinned. However he could not bring himself to give it up. With both his weapons discarded, he had no other plan or means of attack. Just sheer willpower.

At least maybe he could disorient the blueblood from oxygen deprivation long enough to find some sort of handle on the situation.

All of a sudden, there was a crack, jarring Kursha from his thoughts. Had he snapped Zeffer's neck? No, that was impossible. The blueblood was still moving, and besides, there was no way Kursha had the strength. A low buzz continued. The sound mystified him. Or it did until, he saw the lightning arcing over the blueblood's body.

He almost did not move fast enough.

Warmth tingled up through his hands and knee as he lurched away, releasing Zeffer. Unceremoniously he scrambled out of the water and onto a dry patch of land. He had barely gotten to his feet when there was a bright flash of light, followed second snap. A fierce discharge of electricity filled the air with the sent of ozone.

“Get out of the water!” Kursha snapped back over his shoulder to Lorata. He kept a wary eye on Zeffer as he edged around the blueblood, in the direction he had flung the rifle. The blueblood still had his other baton on him. It was possible he had activated it while Kursha had held him under. In that case though, Zeffer should have fried and by the looks of things, he still had enough energy to move around. The implications were worrisome.

Keeping his distance as he searched the reeds, Kursha called out, “That was new.”

Honestly I was having a hard time coming up with an attack for Kursha after Zeffer's inheritence of Zeus, so I figured it would be all right to let the damage be carried over from drowning or an additional attack from MeduMa.

Stay down. Stay down, stay down, just a little longer! Fists clenched and heart pounding, Lorata counted the seconds as Kursha kept Zeffer's head under. How long could a land dweller last without gills? She couldn't remember anyone ever telling her, and it had never occurred to her to care before now, but it couldn't have been much longer than this. She was too terrified to wonder what would come next if it wasn't enough, because that sound the captain had made when he'd last been hit had been- But no, land dwellers were useless in the water, and this would be enough. Just a little more and they'd win!

The adult pushed upwards with a sudden renewal of strength and the seadweller gasped despite herself. Okay, that was fine, he'd still be weak and the Captain just had to finish him off with...Ah! She glanced to the side quickly, to make sure the kid was still down enough to not try and run, and then she burst into motion. Kursha's gun had gone down right about- There was a loud crack suddenly and she paused to look back to the fighting. Not even a moment later there was a snapped order, and she dove for dry land as electricity crackled across the swamp water.

"W-what-? How did he do that?" Could those batons get as powerful as that? For a second, she stared at Kursha, waiting for an answer, and then she realized why he was edging closer. Right, the gun! He wouldn't find it quickly enough if he started from there! Scurrying over to where she'd seen it fall, she hesitated a moment at how wet the muck was and then reached in. It took a little fishing-- oh no, had she gotten the location wrong? she couldn't have-- and then her fingers closed around the barrel.

She pulled so hard that when it came free of the mud it sent her sprawling. Lighting up, she twisted to find Kursha again and lifted the weapon. "Captain! Here!"

MeduMa, meanwhile, hesitated near the blueblood, heads lifted as high above the water as her height above the ground would allow. They were poised to continue the attack once Zeffer started towards Kursha, especially now that Lorata was in the same area, but most of her agreed the surge of energy that had come from him was worrisome. A couple of heads considered whether that worry meant they should attack sooner, in case he had some other unknown abilities that could be thrown towards her charge. One of these lashed out to snap a bite at Zeffer's arm without waiting for the collective's decision.

Despite the pure confusion gripping his thinkpan, Zeffer was viciously relieved when the greenblood's weight lifted away from his back and head. No sooner had Kursha escaped the water than Zeffer was bursting up from it, gasping raggedly and tossing his head back to suck in breath after grateful breath. After he'd recovered for a moment, a choked snarl escaped his throat, and he tore his gogglepatch down, wiping frantically at his face and eyes to clear the mud away. Kursha and Lorata were shouting, but he was still disoriented, and couldn't understand what they were talking about. Not wanting to be caught off guard, he staggered forward half-blind, free hand ripping his second baton from its place on his belt. He didn't know why Kursha had let him loose. Did he have some trick up his sleeve? When he finally spied where the scheming b*****d had slithered off to, he growled, and began to slosh through the water with renewed urgency.

His gun. Of course that was what he wanted, but why had Kursha abandoned the previous situation when he'd had the upper hand? Another shiver wracked the blueblood's body - he still felt that odd tingle, a feeling that vaguely reminded him of the aftermath of sticking a fork into a wall socket - when a horrified thought hit him. He paused for a split second to look down at his baton, which he quickly realized had failed to turn on and amp up. That was it; the swamp water must have shorted it out. He vocalized his anger over the fact, and sped up further, heading directly for Kursha...

Until Lorata called out to him. Zeffer's head whipped around, and as he saw what she was holding up, he changed direction instantly. There was no way, no ******** way, that he was going to take any more hits from that ******** thing. The tingling in his body intensified again as he barreled toward the seadweller, and Zeffer grit his teeth as he tried to ignore it. He was almost upon her when a painful sting shot up his arm, followed by the short -bzzt- of his newly awakened power, which he still did not seem to comprehend. Her lusus. Zeffer roared as he spun around to swing angrily at the snake heads, but was unwilling to let himself be distracted for long; the bites he had taken earlier were swollen and painful, but they didn't hold a candle to the damage the gunshot wounds had wrought.

After rudely swatting a couple of MeduMa's snake heads aside, he turned back to lurch for Lorata, more interested in ripping the gun away than he was in hurting her at all.

As Lorata held the rifle high, any misgivings Kursha previously had about the seadweller evaporated. In that moment, he felt nothing but gratitude. Her cry had not gone unnoticed though. Zeffer stood poised between Kursha and Lorata, and hearing her call, the blueblood had turned on her. The seadweller's lusus came rushing to her defence, but Zeffer batted the heads aside, and lunged towards the young troll. He had a clear shot—with the lusus dazed, nothing stood in his way.

But he had forgotten what stood behind him.

“Oh, no you don't...!” Kursha hissed, gaining on the blueblood. As waterlogged as it was, the gun was likely useless. Even so, there way no way he would give Zeffer the pleasure of beating him to it. Hell, on the off chance the thing still worked he could not risk Zeffer getting ahold of it. The prospect of his own gun being held to his head seemed too real.

Racing up from behind, Kursha carried all his momentum into a sweeping kick, aimed right at the bright blue target painted on Zeffer's back. The impact resonated through the steel toe of Kursha's boot all the way up his leg. He staggered back, balance lost. As he scrambled, water splashing up around his knees, it seemed as though he might fall. Then, he found his centre again.

“Big mistake, turning your back on me,” Kursha snarled, darting around the blueblood. He just needed to get his rifle, get it working, and somehow he could salvage this.

Leaving his back open to Kursha and Lorata's lusus had been a risk that Zeffer was willing to take. Kursha had proven his ineptitude in finishing the job with his bare hands, but if he got a hold of the gun again...well, Zeffer didn't want to think about it. With his baton broken, he felt that he had lost a lot of his own edge, so there was only one real option - get rid of that ******** gun. If he was lucky, the swamp muck might have managed to gunk it up as well, but he didn't want to leave a single ghost of a chance for Kursha to come out on top. He'd break the damn thing against a tree if he had to.

To no one's surprise, the greenblood was hot on his heels. Zeffer's longer stride carried him there quicker, despite the clinging mud, but as he swatted at the hissing jelly-snakes and lunged for Lorata, Kursha swooped in to assist.

The sudden explosion of pain was more than enough to make the blueblood see stars again. As Kursha's boot connected with the wound, his legs buckled beneath him, and he fell to his knees before the seadweller, shrieking in agony. His howling didn't stop as he pitched forward with a sudden erratic movement, grabbing onto the barrel of the gun with his free hand.

"You're a ******** mistake." He snarled back, barking a deranged laugh and baring his fangs at the greenblood as he took a swing with his broken baton.

As Zeffer grabbed on to the barrel of the rifle, Kursha knocked Lorata aside, taking hold of the gun's stock. No sooner had he done so than a baton came racing towards his head. Charge or no charge, with Zeffer's swinging power the weapon was still formidable. A good enough hit could crack his skull. His instincts prompted him to release the gun in order to avoid the blow but that would never happen. Not after he had just gotten it back.

Sacrificing his footing, Kursha swung backwards, taking the rifle with him. The baton whistled an inch his nose with a rush of air. Then he was falling. The rifle slipped out of Zeffer's grip and the stock met Kursha's shoulder. Arms adjusting automatically, the muzzle of the weapon drifted upwards and the sight found the blueblood's head. He fired before he hit the ground.

There was a hollow click.

The sound made Kursha's blood run cold. With a crash, he landed in the reeds. He had known that it might not work. He had known that some the water might have seeped in to the gunpowder. He had known, but he had hoped otherwise. Look where that left him. Cursing, Kursha swung his legs out towards Zeffer's ankles, hoping to knock the blueblood off balance. He could still win this. He just needed a moment to recover his footing and then he could bash Zeffer's brains in.

Zeffer's frantic snarling came to a brief halt as he sucked in a horrified breath. Though Kursha's bid to recover his weapon had occurred in the blink of an eye, time seemed to slow down from Zeffer's point of view, as he found the barrel of the gun slipping downward, only to be pointed directly at his face. Once again the greenblood had given him the slip, and there was precious little time to act. Zeffer brought his arm up to attempt to jerk the barrel to the side, but -

Click.

Kursha slammed into the soggy ground, and Zeffer found himself miraculously unmarred. The swamp water had managed to ******** up the gun after all. Zeffer began to laugh at the realization, a chilling, unhinged cackle escaping him as he kicked harshly at the greenblood's swinging feet. Kursha's near-victory had him shaking and clammy with sweat, but it seemed he had a little scrap of luck left, and he wasn't keen on wasting it.

Zeffer stomped forward quickly to pounce, before Kursha could get back up. Slamming a boot down onto his chest, he grabbed onto the barrel of the gun, before pausing for a moment, distracted by the short flash of light that sparked around his hand as it connected with the metal. His baton was aglow with power again as well, and Zeffer growled in confusion. Was the energy coming from him?? Angry, paranoid thoughts flooded his mind, immediately jumping to some sort of foul play on Kursha's part...but that didn't make any sense. Had something bizarre happened when his batons shorted out in the water?

There was no time to waste trying to find an answer, but Zeffer wasn't afraid to experiment a bit. He shifted his weight to the leg the greenblood was pinned beneath, instantly channeling another painful shock that was assisted by the steel built into his boots. He laughed again, gleefully sadistic as the sparks leapt about his form.

A boot slammed into his chest as he started to rise, knocking him flat onto his back. All the air went out of his lungs. He skull smashed into the ground. With a snarl Kursha tried to sit up, but the heel digging into his ribs pinned him well into the mud. The blueblood's laughter rang in his ears. The sound sent a chill through Kursha, and dread gripped his pump biscuit. He had no weapon and he was at his enemy's mercy.

The blueblood took hold of the rifle, and Kursha saw a flash between his fingertips and the barrel. Then he felt a warm hum in his own fingers and imagined the subsequent flash of pain. Moving faster than he could have if he had touched a hot stove, Kursha released his grip on the gun. There was a faint zap as his hands left the trigger, and his body still tingled with the residual electricity, but otherwise he was unharmed. He had been spared another nasty shock.

Or not.

The last thing Kursha processed was the arc of blue light bouncing across the steel toe of Zeffer's boot. Then his mind went blank. Teeth clenched and limbs twitching, he seized up beneath the blueblood. His skin shuddered and crawled. The crosshairs in his eyes flickered. Somewhere, in the back of his brain he knew he was experiencing pain. Then he was back, gasping and shaking. That shock had been shorter than the last, but no less intense. He knew could not afford to take a third.

Running off pure instinct, Kursha seized the back of Zeffer's ankle and yanked it towards him with all his strength. For once, the mud served to work in his favour, and the boot slipped easily. Stability lost, Zeffer would topple. But first that meant Kursha bore all his weight. He cringed as his ribs protested against the sudden pressure with a groan. Then he twisted to the side, and Zeffer slid away. He was free, if only for a moment. Sitting up, Kursha lunged towards the blueblood, ramming his elbow into his gut.

Zeffer's mind was still awash with amazement and disbelief as he felt the current travel through him, a delicious tingling sensation that ended with a painful surprise for Kursha. How was it possible? Some sort of bizarre defense mechanism, woke from the stress his body was enduring? For a split second, his mind revisited the brush with death he'd experienced out in the rain all those months ago - but no, that couldn't possibly provide a coherent explanation. It was impossible to be that lucky.

As Kursha relinquished his hold on the gun, Zeffer yanked it away from him, unwilling to let go, even though the weapon was out of commission. Sparks crackled around his hands as he leaned down harder, but as usual, his wily opponent was full of surprises. Zeffer let out a startled snarl as Kursha yanked his foot, flailing for a moment until losing his battle with gravity. He hit the ground with a thud, and began to thrash, trying unseccessfully to backpedal away from the greenblood. Kursha's hit earned a pained grunt, and for a moment Zeffer doubled over in aching breathlessness.

Zeffer's injuries were finally beginning to wear him thin; there wasn't a single part of his body that wasn't injured or sore, and with all the blood he was losing, he knew he couldn't keep up such a vicious pace. It was time to start putting together an escape plan. Gasping, he lashed out, and managed to land a solid, painful swat to Kursha's wrist. Sparks flew everywhere - the baton was crackling loudly, and felt unusually hot in his hand. He hadn't noticed until then, but the prospect that his newly awakened powers were causing the weapon to heat up was unbelievable in its own right.

Pressing backwards, Zeffer finally managed to sit up, using Kursha's rifle to support himself. He took several more angry swings, while digging the butt of the rifle into the mud and using it to pull himself to his feet, kicking at Kursha all the while. For a split second, he scanned the area before his eyes settled on Maneki. If he could just incapacitate Kursha long enough to grab the kid and make his exit...

Kursha reeled as the baton smashed against his wrist, and sparks coursed up his arm. The pain from the burns he had sustained back in the tunnels came back with a vengeance. The scent of burning flesh filled his nose. It made him want to retch. He pulled away just long enough for Zeffer to recover. As the blueblood kicked out at him, Kursha further recoiled, unsteady on his feet.

The shock was mild in comparison to the last two he had received, but the blast of electricity was still enough to jumble his brain. Even as he struggled to maintain balance, he temporarily blacked out, body swaying. The crosshairs in his eyes flickered and distorted, shape uneven. It was only through sheer willpower that he remained standing.

Vision returning, Kursha steadied himself. In the brief moment of respite, Zeffer’s attention shifted. Kursha noticed the glance. It was almost as though he read the blueblood’s mind.

Despite his failing consciousness, Kursha knew he was close. For Zeffer to consider retreat meant that he had reached his limit. He could not remain standing for much longer. To be fair neither could Kursha. But just a little bit more and he would nail the blueblood. Then everything he had done would not be in vain. Damn it, he was going to win this if it killed him.

Without wasting a second more, he lunged for the gun.

The smell of Kursha's burnt flesh brought sick satisfaction to Zeffer, but it was short-lived. The greenblood's stamina was maddening; most trolls would have fallen long before, and he was already shouldering the injuries and exhaustion from the fight in the caverns. Zeffer wanted nothing more than to kill Kursha, but for once, he would heed his own limitations, if only to protect a life he held in higher regard than his own. Maneki was not allowed to suffer a miserable death in the swamp, or at the hands of the Queen, or anywhere else. Zeffer had a promise to keep.

If he couldn't kill them, he could outrun them. The child and her lusus were no match, but would Kursha attempt to pursue if he tried to abscond? The answer seemed obvious, and Zeffer snarled as his opponent lunged close, jostling him out of his thoughts.

"Oh, is this what you want?" He hissed as Kursha darted for the weapon, and a wicked thought entered his head. He yanked the butt of the rifle out of the mud and shoved it into the greenblood's hands with a growl, grinning the bloody grin of a maniac as he locked eyes with the younger troll. With his hands still wrapped firmly around the barrel, and the end pointed away from his body, he gave the gun a rough jerk.

"Take it then."

Squeezing the barrel, Zeffer grit his teeth and focused as best as his pain-addled mind could manage. With another loud, electrical crack, he began funneling the vicious, sizzling energy through the metal and directly into Kursha. Once again, brilliant blue sparks danced about his hands, curving up his arms before fizzing into nothing. If the attack didn't floor him for a minute or two, nothing would...

By the time Kursha sensed a trap it was too late. The blueblood thrust the rifle into his hands, grinning as he held the other end. As he met Kursha’s eyes, Kursha knew exactly what he was planning. He panicked. Wait just a minute…! Everything seemed to slow down. He needed to let go. If he didn’t, he was done for. The gun was useless anyway. Without it he still stood a chance if he could keep his range. He just needed to…

There was a burst of light and a fierce crack. Kursha seized up, his entire body rigid with electricity. White, hot pain shot through him like molten metal. His throat clenched, and over the harsh buzz of electricity, a shrill whine once more escaped him. There was no room to think, no room to process; just searing, mind-splitting agony. Eventually not even that. The crosshairs in his eyes flickered one last time, then faded.

As the sparks died around Zeffer’s arm, Kursha’s voice dwindled to a whimper. His fingers slipped from the gunstock. With nothing more to support him he fell. He was gone long before he hit the ground.

With a muted splash, Kursha landed facedown in the swamp water. A thin trail of smoke rose off his form. Sparks danced over his skin, popping and snapping. With each jolt of electricity he twitched. Other than that he lay still.

As Kursha's crosshairs faded away, Zeffer breathed out a staggered growl, stepping back as the greenblood finally tipped over. For a moment, he swayed in place himself and sucked in a deep breath, light-headed from the intensity of his own attack, and from the sheer amount of energy he'd expended. Or maybe that was due to the bloodloss...he took a shaky step, and panted quietly, gathering himself and trying to ignore the searing pain that came with every step. He had done it. Soon, he would be able to rest.

The jelly lusus was still hovering near, but Zeffer didn't even care enough to look around for it as he stepped over Kursha's body and sloshed across to Maneki. He was too eager to escape before the greenblood came to (if he ever did), but as he began to wiggle out of his jacket, he snarled aloud and grit his teeth, instantly reminded of his injuries as he peeled his arms from the sleeves. Scooping the little orangeblood up, Zeffer wrapped him carefully and held him close, sparing one last glance back at his fallen opponent. With any luck, the last shock had stopped his heart.

No time to wait and see, and no time to check, or to allow the seadweller's lusus to attack. Without another word, Zeffer turned to flee, clutching his precious cargo tight to his chest. Every footfall sent jolts of agony through him, as the adrenaline of battle drained away to leave him exhausted and sore. Despite the pain, Zeffer forced himself along, ducking beneath curtains of vines and around thick trees; whatever it took to put as much distance between himself and the Royalists as he could. Byakko had to be around somewhere. Cursing the fact that they had split up, he rushed ahead, resolved to head north, the same direction they were taking the Mother Grub, and his best bet for reuniting with the rest of the Initiative.
