The Frantic Search
(Class Choice Solo)

She had gotten home and immediately ran upstairs. It was late in the day, but now that her studies were over, her chores were done, and she had gotten water from the communal well, she knew what she was going to do for the rest of her night. Vaena closed the door to her room behind her and started shuffling through her belongings. She muttered to herself under her breath and furrowed her brow, looking for just one thing in particular that she had no idea where she had put it. Vaena rustled through her things in her room before finally pulling out her pack. She felt irritated to say the least. She knew she had bought it, she knew it was in her room, but she couldn’t find it. Eventually after sifting through the bag gently, she just dumped the sack and rummaged through all of the small stones that fell out. It was just the one. She was only looking for that one she had bought at the market two weeks ago. She had been saving it, but she guessed she had saved it for too long. She was nearly about to give up when she saw it. She made a sound of triumph and picked the small stone up with her fingers.

It was perfect for what she was doing now. She needed a ring, and this little mustard colored stone would be the perfect centerpiece for it. She put it aside and collected the messy remains of her frantic search, putting the rest of the stones and small items back into the pack and setting it aside where it belonged. The ring would be a dusky metal she decided. She would set the mustard stone in the center to make it feel warmer, and then she hoped she could try to engrave the sides. But she hadn’t gotten that part right yet. She pursed her lips at the thought and moved off of her bed and to her desk.

Her parents were both tailors, both working with fabrics, but to Vaena that just sounded boring. She knew it wasn’t for her, and while for the longest time tinkering with jewelery was just a hobby, some silly little thing she had picked up, she felt a connection to it. She thought now that she was older, she could actually imagine a life where she would pursue it. Become skilled. And to do that… well she supposed she would have to find someone she could learn from. She chewed on her lips, still holding the stone. The only problem being that she didn’t want to learn from just anyone locally. No one here would know the things she would need to learn to be great at it. She would have to move to Pajore. And… she couldn’t imagine her parents taking it very well.

She sighed and set the stone down on the desk. What was she supposed to tell them, or how was she supposed to fight them if they said ‘no’? She would have to fight for herself when that time came. Though to move to Pajore, she would be closer to Mehlna, even if she would never see her. Maybe there was a chance? Maybe there was a time when the priests were would and about and could talk to the normal people of Yaeli? She could hope, right? She shook her head. It wasn’t something she would dwell on now at least.

She supposed that she could still visit her parents when she was able to take breaks from learning. And that was assuming someone would even agree to let her apprentice them. That was a very large assumption. She rolled the stone over on her desk and chewed on her thoughts some more. Well, she guessed at least she had decided what she was going to do with her life. She would be a jeweler. That was at least one step in the right direction. With that in mind she picked the stone back up from the desk and inspected the shape of it. She would have to work hard to be able to get the metal to do what she needed it to do. She opened up one of the drawers and rustled through all of the clanking and tinging metal she had accumulated the past few months. She was new to it, and she felt like she would never get it exactly right on her own. For now she just held the metals over the flame of a candle with her tweezers and bent and shaped it roughly like that. It made for very… unique designs, though they just recently started getting good enough to the point where they fit an actual finger. Usually they pinched something awful and ended up back in the other junk drawer she never used.

She picked up one of the pieces of metal, one of the better looking ones, and a nice dusky pink color that she had already had in mind, and then her tweezers and put them both to the side, getting ready to start her candle up and start the process. At least one thing she could count on was she would keep this up as long as she could, and do her best, be one of the best… and that she would burn herself tonight probably. The fight with her parents would come another day.

Breaking the News
(Growth Solo)

[Up until now Vaena has kept her plan for the future a secret. Now that she needs to actually start looking for a teacher Vaena needs to break the news to her parents and get their blessing to move to Pajore.]

Vaena had been seen lately with a scowl on her face, and it wasn’t likely to go away anytime soon unless something changed. She had been thinking a lot lately about the next step for her. She knew what it was she wanted to do, and she was ready to do it. She was old enough now that it was time for her to find a teacher to learn her craft. She knew this… but she still needed to tell her parents. And that was the source of her scowl. She knew that they weren't going to be so open minded to her ideas of how or what she wanted to learn. She still had Devra at home so her parents wouldn’t be lonely, and while her parents would no doubt know that eventually she had to move out and live her own life, she thought that they would probably think that sixteen was too soon.

But it wasn’t for Vaena.

So after squaring up her shoulders, she left the solidarity of her room to find her parents. It was time to have “the talk” or else she would end up with permanent frown lines if this kept up much longer. She found them in the kitchen and after taking a deep breath in she let it all out. ”I want to go to Pajore to find a teacher.” She blurted out. Her parents seemed concerned… and confused. Her mother was the first to say it. ”Pajore? But why Pajore? We could teach you from home.” She offered. Vaena hadn’t mentioned to them yet that she didn’t want to be a seamstress. She had kept that to herself; she didn’t want to upset her parents over it prematurely. She was changing her lifestyle and branching out after all. She brushed her hair off of her shoulders and with a little bit of guilt she shook her head. ”I don’t want to work with cloth.” They took a few seconds to take it in, both of them looking a little confused. ”Vaena, what would you do if it wasn’t tailoring?” Her father asked her, taking a seat at the kitchen table. ”You haven’t even mentioned anything before this, we had no idea you weren’t staying in the family trade.” He seemed to barely believe that she was being serious. She could see the doubt on his face. ”Are you sure this isn’t a phase?” He added.

Vaena felt the irritation bubbling up but she shoved it back down. It wasn’t their fault that Vaena was private with her thoughts. She never really shared anything with anyone, including her parents. She shook her head harder and looked at her parents with a steady gaze. ”No it’s not a phase. I want to be a jeweler. I’ve been practicing for over a year now.” She tried to keep her voice calm, she didn’t want to fight with her parents, she wanted their blessing and their help. She would need them to be open to helping her if she needed to move away. And without their blessings Vaena had no doubt the gods would take notice and find a way to punish her for it. ” All of the best jewelers are in Pajore, and I need to learn from one of them.”

Her parents looked to each other, and she could hear the worry in her mother’s voice. ”Vaena, don’t you think it’s too soon? You’re only sixteen. You’re barely grown. What will you do all by yourself?” She put a hand on Vaena’s shoulder, trying to convince her to stay. Vaena chewed on her lip, considering whether she should just brush her mother’s hand away or try to comfort her. She ended up putting a hand on her mother’s hand and humming a noise of unease before answering her. ”Mother, many other children leave their home to learn their skill at much younger ages.” She let the next part slip out without really thinking it through or considering what the response would be. ”Mehlna was only six when she was taken to be on her own.” Though once it had been said, Vaena felt like it was wrong on her lips. Her parents seemed to agree. Her mother looked instantly sad, and her father’s face took on a deep frown. ”Vaena. That is not the same and you know it.” Her father scolded her. She pursed her lips and crossed her arms, responding only after taking a moment to consider herself and her place. ”I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it like that. But still, other teenagers leave the house much younger than I’m asking to.” She pushed. ”Please, I need you to say yes, I can’t look for a teacher without it.” She was begging her parents, they had to see it her way.

Her mother wrapped her in a hug, something Vaena hadn’t really let happen in years, but she slowly wrapped her arms around her mother and accepted the embrace. ”We support you. I just wish you weren’t leaving Ilidan. It might not be very far away, but it’s too far for me.” Vaena nodded her head slowly. She understood the concern, and she would miss them being in the town over, but she felt like she had no choice. ”Will you help me move when I find a teacher?” she asked them. They nodded their heads, both agreeing to it and Vaena met her dad’s eyes with gratitude. ”I’m going to leave to find a teacher next week then.” She offered. With a week’s notice at least her parents would be able to digest the idea of their second daughter leaving them.

She left the room feeling better than she had before and now it was up to her to make all the arrangements necessary to leave Ilidan. She would need to pack, and she would need to see if she could find out about any well known jewelers in the Pajore. There was a lot of work ahead of her, but she could feel the weight off of her shoulders now that her parents were behind her.
