Phoenix made her way inside and stayed pressed against Latcho's side until they were fully in. Once settled she let her gaze sweep across the space, beaming. "This is such a cozy place!"
Helpfully, she moved some of the dried sticks closer to him and helps to situate them in the right shape. She finds the flint rocks nearby and situates them closer as well for striking. "Its already much warmer just being out of the wind."
She levels her sights on him once the sparks have caught and the beginnings of the flames start nibbling at the branches. Eyes narrowed, ears slightly back, and head dipped low "When you go out to hunt...you're going to come back, right?

Latcho looks up as he replaces the fire starters. "Even if I thought to leave, I don't have the strength. Physical or mental. I do believe you will one day wish you had let me leave. But I won't do it again. I tried to be noble for you. Now . . ." He shakes his head, "I'll be back." It almost sounded threatening, but he nuzzled her shoulder briefly before walking back to the entrance. "Keep the fire going, eat your fill. I'll be back." Latcho didn't linger. In part because he knew it would just get more difficult to leave her, in part because he knew if he wanted the weather would make the hunt more difficult. And he knows it's already going to be difficult in his current state.

Phoenix nodded slowly and watched him go until she couldn’t see him anymore. Turning away from the entrance she surveyed the cave a little closer, eyeing the walls that seemed to be closing in on her. The fire crackled and popped in the silence, the trickling water and shrieking wind pressed on her ears. Her stomach twisted with anxiety. She needed a distraction, something else to focus on. “It’s okay, it’s okay. He’ll be back. He said he would.” She tried to nibble the grass, fill her belly with food instead of squirming worries. She managed a few mouthfuls before she had to stop, her stomach rolling uncomfortably. She sipped the cool water, it had a refreshing effect and when her stomach didn’t rebel, she drank a little deeper. “Focus. Don’t think about the walls…he’ll be back.” Trying to stay distracted was more difficult than she imagined. She dusted and cleared pebbles out of the corners, babied the fire and when she couldn’t do anything else, her legs trembling and heart pounding in her ears, she went out into the cold. She gulped down lungfuls of the frigid air, steadying herself against the entrance. She’d wait here. This was better, with the looming gray sky and the fat snowflakes melting on her wings and through her mane. “I’m okay…”

Through the increasing snow, movement can be seen. Low to the ground at first, like the path itself is moving closer. They shapes resolving themselves into a carpet of mice. Small voices call out, "someone here," "Devlesa araklam tume," "see something," "hello!" "You're not Latcho," "Kaski san?" Then more, larger shapes can be seen approaching. "Ov yilo isi, Hello." The first of the mares calls out. "We are looking for our pral. Have you seen a stallion near here?" The blue mare chimes in, "Also, it is cold. Is the haven big enough to share?" The last hangs back a bit, quiet for the moment. She doesn't recognize Phoenix and doesn't think she's a part of their herd. She could well be someone who happened upon one of their safe spaces and isn't prepared for the overwhelm and oddities approaching.

Phoenix looked down when she saw movement near the ground. She blinked furiously thinking the snow was playing tricks on her vision until she was able to discern the shape of the mouse...er...mice. A lot of mice. Her gaze darted up to see larger approaching figures. She eyed the four mares warily, tail flicking with nervous energy. This was the middle of nowhere, she thought. How would a whole army of mice and small herd- Ears pricked and she tilted towards the mice. "Latcho? Oh. Do you know him?" She turns back to the mares, some of the wariness seeping away. "Are you looking for him?" A horrible, silly thought occurred to her that had a blush rising to her cheeks. She had assumed that he was single - on the market. Embarrassment flooded her emotions like she'd been dunked in ice. Had she read the entirety of their situation wrong? But that wouldn't make sense.
Unused to the turmoil roiling in her brain she shifted back a step and tilted her chin up. "Sorry ladies - he's not here." She eased out of the entryway to allow them to go inside. "There is plenty of room inside...and a small fire." Deciding she was done feeling out of place she shook off her nerves.
"How do you know Latcho?"

The mice swarm in, finding small spaces to get out from under hoof and huddle together for warmth. The blue mare smiles and nods, moving past to enter the cave, "I'm Godi, thanks for getting the fire going." The first mare starts to move in when she hears Latcho isn't here, "You know Latcho but he's not here?" A sigh as she shakes her head. "No rest ladies. If he's bad enough for Baxt to leave him and get help we can't wait for the storm to pass." She nods to Phoenix, "Sorry to disturb you. Could you tell us which way you last saw him?" Cam and Sonkai don't move closer, their thicker fur keeping them warm as they keep watch, hoping to see their missing herdmate. Voice soft, Cam calls out, "Jel, do you want to stay or come with us?" At the same time Sonkai looks over to the other mare, "You should stay here Djilia. We can handle the cold. We'll find him and bring him back here." One of the mice scurries out, clasping a bell. "I'm coming!" She quickly moves to tuck herself into the sister's manes to keep warm. Djilia sighs, "that's kind, but he's pretty big, even if he's lost as much weight as Baxtalo says. You'll need help getting him back if he's succumbed to the weather and his stubborn stupidity." The twins nod, accepting Djilia with no further words as they turn to head back out. Djilia offers a strained smile, "do you mind if Godi and the littles wait here? The cold was really starting to get to them."

”Baxtalo?” Realization brightened her features with a smile.”Oh, you’re Latcho’s Baxtalo!” Phoenix tried to follow the conversation, she really did, however she was still feeling a bit flustered as she looked toward the gray/brown mare. “Of course they can stay.” Steely resolve settled over her, setting her gaze in the direction she saw him last. “Let’s go.” Gauzy wings plastered to her sides to keep them from damage, she stubbornly set out into the rapidly deepening snow. She couldn’t believe she had let him convince her to stay behind. “I’m Phoenix, by the way.”

"Ah . . . Baxtalo is with some of the other mice, they're helping take care of him. He was in bad shape when he found us." Djilia explains, "can you tell us what's happening with Latcho? Baxt was afraid he was going to get himself killed with the way he was going."
Cam and Sonkai just keep silent pace, they and Jel keeping close watch all around them, hoping to spot Latcho.

The way her cheeks flamed when she thought of him and what had happened between them. What had caused him to run. She knew he was conflicted, had tried to be 'noble' and save her from himself. But she wasn't afraid of him. It wasn't fear that made her heart thunder and her belly swoop with excitement at the presence of just his gaze on her. "I'm not afraid of him, you know? And I think-" She cleared her throat as she squinted through the snow. "I know he's good." An adoring smile spread across her face. "He just doesn't know he's good, y'know?" She looks over at the mare accompanying her, taking in her features without comment. "And I don't think he knew what to do when I told him I wanted to stay. That I wanted him to keep me." She moves her gaze past the mare, looking again for her yellow stallion and hoping beyond anything that he was alright, worried about the gaunt hollow to his cheeks and the sharpness of his hips, knowing that before he left her the first time, he was filled out, strong. Not for the first time, she grumbled under her breath about stubborn stallions and her immense dislike of the snow.

Djilia stops to look at Phoenix, "what? Of course he's good. He's a little troubled because of some family traits. But he does really well with it all. Much better than his mother. We've almost lost her a few times and even when she's with us she can be difficult to be around for long. But we love her, love him. And if he doesn't know he's good I've failed more than I thought I had." Cam and Sonkai come up and nuzzle Djilia gently. "You've done an amazing job. But you know as well as any of us how difficult it is to meet strangers." Sonkai says. Cam nods and adds, "and with his feeding requirements Latcho has always struggled with believing what outsiders call him. He knows that even if most of us look different, we still are like most other Soquili on the inside. But he always thought his family curse made him more like a Walker. It's a big part of why he spends so much time traveling alone. He loves his family and herd," a smile for Djilia. "Loves his aunt who raised him more than his troubled mother. But if an outsider, bold and fearless and beautiful were to see past the walls he puts up and want to be with him anyway . . ." Sonkai offers a sad smile, "He already spends more time away from the herd than with it. He tells you he just likes exploring, but he really is afraid he'll lose to his hunger one day and hurt someone. If he cared about a mare who didn't fear him . . . Even if he didn't care, he would leave. But between what Baxtalo told us and what she's saying . . . Sounds like he has feelings and he's been letting his fear trigger his noble stubborn avoidance." Djilia just stares at them for a moment, then looks at Phoenix with new eyes. They'd found her in one of their safe havens. She'd been too worried about Latcho to really think about the mare. The realization that she isn't of their herd, and hasn't fussed about their appearance, instead accepting and helping is surprising. Then she remembers what the mare said, "You . . . You care for Latcho? He cares for you?" She looks like someone dealt her a solid blow to the head. Slowly she starts to smile, "Welcome to the family! Let's find our boy, then I want to hear all about you!"

She can feel her cheeks flushing to the point her skin prickles uncomfortably; realizing this is his family, part of his herd. Even though she didn’t voice her uncertainties earlier, she can’t help but feel foolish. Phoenix straightens, shaking off the uncertainties threatening to take over again. “Of course I do. I just need him to realize it too and to stop running from me.” An amused grin flashed to her face. “Apparently, if anyone’s to be feared it’s me.” A sardonic laugh huffed from her, breath clouding the air as she rolled her eyes before sliding her gaze back to the three mares, settling again to the smiling mare. “Oh! Um. Thank you…?” Was she family? Would Latcho…but she couldn’t dwell on it. They needed to find him. Already their brief pause meant a delay, though short. Nodding, she continued her path, meticulously scanning the landscape for signs.

The mares spend almost 15 minutes in the quickening storm before they spot Latcho heading towards them. His steps heavy, barely shivering, but determinedly putting one hoof in front of another. Djilia calls out and rushes to his side, helping steady and support him. Latcho looks up but it takes a moment to recognize her. "Aunt Jili? I . . . Why . . ." Shaking his head, "doesn't matter, have to get back." He keeps plodding forward, determined to keep his promise. "Wait, Latcho, it's okay. Let us help you. Baxtalo brought us because he was worried about you." Latcho nods, "makes sense, I've been lost. But I can't stop now. Can't stop. Have to get back." He doesn't even look up, using his strength, what he has, to keep moving. Cam looks at Phoenix, "he needs you. Support him, I'll bring up the rear, get us all back to the warm cave."

”Oh Latcho….what the hell.” Her words leave her on a breath, concern etched into her features. She nods resolutely to Cam, already rushing to press herself against his other side, lending him her strength. “Hey, hey.” She coos as she fits her cheek to his jaw to support his head. “You pushed yourself too hard, love.” Her tail sought to twine with his, touching as much of him as possible, trying to reassure herself with his scent, hating the chill of his skin as it pressed to hers.

Latcho startles, "Phoenix? You . . . You're supposed to be safe and warm. I know you don't like waiting, but . . . I promised." His hooves stop, eyes closing. Djilia and Cam and Sonkai tense to help if it's needed, but wait, sensing that this is between the two of them. His voice soft, "I thought you trusted me. I was . . . I was going to prove you could, going to keep my promise. He trembles, standing there in the swirling snow, his aunt supporting him on the other side looks over at Phoenix, worried that he isn't moving.
