Dread and sorrow filled Margaery's stomach as the air filled with Falsetto's questions. She bit her lip and willed the tears away. Who had made her feel this way? Who had made her internalize whatever was making her feel like these questions needed to be asked? "Of course you're good," she whispered, her voice cracking with her hidden tears. "You have done nothing bad or wrong." Margaery took a step back toward Falsetto, who had yet to move. "There's strength in you that you don't know you have. I saw it when you brought a stranger into your home to offer shelter: kindness, goodness, strength. And you are not alone," she added, taking another step closer. The determination she put in her voice was genuine. This mare was lost, lost even more than Margaery; she had needs that she had never recognized or understood before, now that she was on her way to becoming a whole version of herself. They were needs that Margaery knew, as well: the need for reassurance, for validation, for comfort now that she lived a rather solitary existence. "I am with you."

I am with you. The words echoed in Falsetto's mind, took root in her heart and made it surge for a moment. She really wasn't alone. But the look on Margaery's face made her realize that as tough and confident as Margaery seemed, she had been there before.

Maybe they were both broken, and maybe how you healed was finding someone else broken to support you so that you could heal together.

She stepped closer to Margaery. She could feel the other mare's body heat in the cool desert air. "Thank you," she said softly. "I don't think anyone has ever said that to me before." For a moment she hesitated, unwilling to risk upsetting Margaery.

But the look on the other mare's face pushed the words from her mouth. "You're good too. And I'll be here for you if you ever need me. Always."

Always.

Margaery stared at Falsetto, frozen and speechless. Every thought she had had stopped in its tracks when False reciprocated her words. She felt like her world had suddenly flattened, and with the next breeze, she would shatter and fall to pieces in the desert sand.

No one had ever said anything more to her than a thank you, let alone something like I'll be here or followed with an always. Margaery was accustomed to giving counsel, letting her ideas be taken and used to help others, and helping others herself. Others took her for granted, she supposed, but she did not have it in her to mind. She liked being reliable, being someone others could count on.

It was so much better than being volatile and unpredictable. She knew firsthand how that could affect the ones around her.

She did not ever expect that anyone would offer anything back.

"Th-thank you," she stuttered back. Her eyes had to be as surprised as her hair became when it was faced with humidity - bright, shiny, and oh so big.

The whites of Margaery's eyes expanded only enforcing False's sense that she was a bright star leading her, her eyes the moon.

Wait, that didn't make sense? What was she thinking? Her cheeks felt hot and she glanced away quickly. What the heck was wrong with her?

"You're welcome," she whispered hoping Margaery heard her.

For a moment words failed her then they tumbled out in a gushing torrent. "I've not had many friends before." None really that she could think of, but that sounded kind of sad to say.

She looked back up at Margaery, "We can do this together can't we? Be more than our past, find happiness?"

Smiling briefly at Falsetto's acknowledgment of her thank you, Margaery wondered what her sudden quietness was about - and what the quick, bashful aversion of her eyes that came before it meant.

Margaery blinked at Falsetto as she spoke quickly again, telling Margaery what she had already expected. I had friends once, but so many things took them away from me and me from them. "We can," she confirmed. "And at some point, you have to find a friend to support you. Who better than one who has supported you from the first?" Well, that wasn't entirely true. Perhaps since the conception of the idea of Falsetto finding herself. Prior to that, Margaery had been rather wary of the mare. She mostly hoped that Falsetto understood her meaning, more than the individual meanings of the words themselves.

Heat blossomed in False's chest. This was what it felt like to have a friend, right? It seemed comforting but also familiar in a ways that she hadn't entirely expected.

"I don't know why you took a chance on me," she said. "But I'm glad you did."

She looked up at the sky beginning to lighten up. "What are your favorite things? We've talked about mine, but not yours." She smiled brightly at her.

Margaery laughed, her smile returning. "You didn't give me much of a choice, with your watching me bathe." A moment passed as Margaery processed what she had said, then ducked her head, blushing furiously beneath her chocolate fur.

"I like roses, songbirds, places where I can see all the way around me," she rushed out, trying to fill the conversation with new words to drown out her own embarrassment. "I like the warm haze of summer and the crisp air in the turning autumn, and sometimes the rain. Other climates I'm not much made for."
