It was official, the universe hated him. It hated him with a passion. He had heard horror stories about the kids that had transferred in about making fish. So of course what did he get… fish. To top it all off he had to make a desert with Carmel… Carmel. He mentioned the universe hated him right. He looked over to see what Meris was doing and realized he was going to kill his roommate in his sleep. Yep…
Of course it was a disaster and he burned most of his fish. It didn’t help that Meris kept giving him all the looks as if he wanted to say something but Morin wanted to accomplish it by himself. While he had burned some of the fish most of it was still salvageable and he cut away those pieces and cut the fish up into almost shreds, put it in a bowl added corn, and threw in some onions to help flavor and threw all that back at the pan on low. It was kind of what Meris was doing. Thinking it had, what was the word marinated enough he piled his leftover mix onto the plate. Needed a vegetable however, and luckily Meris had taught Morin to make Baked zucchini chips one day. So vegetable was out of the way… the corn would count for starch and fish was saved possibly?
First attempt at making caramel it crystalized, second attempt Morin wasn’t even going to speak about it. Eventually after about the third time he caved… grabbed a bunch of caramel squares and melted them down. He then cut some apple slices and poured the caramel sauce over the apples. Just in case that didn’t quite count, he cut the top of an apple off hollowed out the bottom half and filled it with caramel so it was like a miniature caramel jar. This would work right? Ugh he never wanted to see fish or caramel again.
Cassie knew she was an okay cook - she could more than hold her own in the kitchen though she didn't like to get too fancy. For the purpose of the class, she felt like a meal to eat would be received just as well as meal to woo. Settling down, she looked at her two must haves. Strawberries and Beef? Good thing they weren't for the same dish.
Working carefully to mind her fingers, Cassie was pleased that her beef came out as intended. It was basically a steak, but with slow and precise movements she quartered her slab and turned it into simple kebab squares. Next, she took her tiny tomatoes and cut a flat bottom to each before adding them to a second skewer. Laying them just right so they lightly browned was hard, but only one of the five had come out burnt so she was pleased, slicing away the dehydrated corner. Rice also wasn't too hard, and she worked around the burnt bits at the bottom of her pot to produce a pile that looked edible next to her skewer of meat and veggies. Pleased with the way her plate looked, Cassie moved on to her dessert.
The Fallen realized far too late cheesecake was a lot of work, and with a frown she touched the slightly-gooey slice. It wasn't as solid as she hoped, but she still needed to add the strawberries on top. Sighing, she poured them over, hoping she wouldn't get docked too much for not getting her cheesecake to settle. It practically slid off the crust. She had tested herself that it still tasted good though, so at least she produced something edible like she thought she could.

Raia stared at the paper and advertisement slips. He wanted them to do what!? Didn't help the teacher seemed so nonchalant about the whole ordeal. Raia took a deep breath and flipped through the fliers. Well...she was a good cook and could do a lot with a little. Best to make a menu then figure out how to do it all on the cheap.
Melisara stared at their teacher in panic. Make a shopping list? Based on budget?! She couldn't do that! It was impossible! She bit her nails as she looked up prices in the index book that was slightly out of date, scribbling down numbers and figures. What were her staples? What would she need? Could she afford to buy sugar? And how much meat was a single serving, anyway?
Hurried calculations filled several pages, at the end of which, Sara found herself looking into the face of...being under budget. She blinked. Well, that was...nice. Still a harrowing prospect, however!
She called her parent, Saram, that evening, for her weekly phonecall home. Saram laughed and laughed at their daughter when Sara complained about how impossible the task was.
"Whaddija thank Ah was doin' with mah calculator every Thursday evenin', sunshahn?"
Life skills sounded like just the sort of lame class they'd teach you at a school like this. So why was it so damn difficult?!
Today's assignment was to make a meal. Sounded...reasonable, cooking was a skill that Bath rather wished he had. And he still wished he had it at the end of the day, because his meat course had managed to get quite crispy. One end of it was burnt, but a quick taste test confirmed that...well, the rest of it was quite tasty. The green beans had not turned out well at all, they were far over-boiled and nasty, but hey...he could improve on that. He noted what he did wrong--too much oil, too much boil--in his notes and waited to be graded.
A food budget with 6 crescents a week? That sounded pretty bad, but Yihad was sure hu could make it work. However, as Yihad began to work through hus budget and proportioning each meal he would have, hu began to realize hu was having a lot of extra money by the end of each week. It came to the point hu could buy a whole extra week's worth of food with the extra money hu wasn't spending, and that was only by week three! Was that a bad thing? All hu was doing was buying cheep foods that came in packages of 4 to 12, and that meant leftovers for the next week over for some of the foods, which meant hu could spend less at the market to get more of that item. Not only that, but hu wasn't reaching the 6 crescent mark each week either.
Surely hu could find a way to spend the extra money on food, but hu really didn't feel like hu would eat that much. Hu could barely finish a can of soup most nights, and eating out or treating humself to a special meal really wasn't hus thing. What Yihad really preferred was meals that didn't change much from week to week, and that was what hus project here showed.

Once the seniors finished cooking Sam passed around special containers he'd bought for just this purpose. "Thought you made it all for show? Nope, congrats you all made me lunch and dinner for the next week!" he said with a cheeky grin. "I'll have your grades once I finish it all." he said.

Ashlynn:
Fish: Slightly over cooked, could used some salt, otherwise well done. Green Beans: Very nice touch with the almonds, added nice crunch element. Potatoes: Nice finish on the potatoes, love the seasoning on them. Cake: Little under done in the center, in the trade we'd call this a "lava cake" ; 3. Was very tasty~
Nice job
Nasaiki
Meris:
Beef: Nicely seasoned. Spaghetti: Slightly over done, watch your cook times. Avocado: Strange choice? A nice salad would have been lovely, but it was perfectly ripe, so good choice in knowing how to select your produce. Strawberries: Simple, but simple is nice. I only got one though :c Professor Tan ate the rest.
Morin:
Fish: This was...interesting... Corn: Had a nice crunch. Zucchini: Cut on some of these was a bit big, but very creative, tasty too. Caramel: Caramel and Apples just go hand in hand! Pity the caramel wasn't scratch, but it's such a pain to make. Again, Professor Tan hate most of it...
Panda Moor
Cassie:
Beef: Nicely cooked, nicely seasoned. Tomatoes: Little char never hurt anyone~ I wouldn't have minded the one that was slightly over done. Adds a nice dimension to the flavor. Rice: Was a touch on the under cooked side. Strawberry Cheesecake: Despite the appearance, it was still very eatable. Just remember time management! This should have been in the fridge while your meat was on the grill.
Geyser Eelborn
Batholith:
Fish: Except for the part you burned, it was good. Nicely seasoned. Sometimes fish is hard to get right. Green Beans: Very over done. Bread: Little on the cheaty side but I'll let it slide this time~ You ever want to know how to make a killer dinner roll hit me up~! :3 Cookie Parfait?: Was very tasty. Professor Tan agrees.
Yue took the first available seat and listened to the lecture. She remembered that assignment Professor Sam had been talking about and resisted a slight shudder. Finances weren’t her favorite thing, they were more like a necessary evil. Luckily however she hadn’t had that dreaded fish assignment yet. Meris and her still teased Morin every once in a while. Taking the worksheet she quickly worked her way through it, Money could definitely disappear rather fast. Luckily they were still in the Academy, but it was something she would have to pay close attention to very soon. Quickly finishing up the worksheet, she turned it in to Professor Sam and gathered up her bags to go to the next class.

Madla was actually fairly good at budgeting. She had to be now that she wasn't just fending for herself anymore. Not having money didn't mean she'd have a couple hungry days until the next gig. It meant that Ana might go hungry and that was unacceptable.
True, her budgeting was easier than some because of how much their gigs went for now, but still. She couldn't say there weren't days that she didn't dip into the savings. Accidents happen. New shoes and clothes and schoolbooks and food were all needed at the same time for a growing girl. Finishing up the worksheet, she turned it into the teacher and headed towards her next class.
Sascha, being a parent of two already, had to be very conscious of his spending. He didn't want either of his children to go hungry because he didn't have enough money to pay for basic things and made it a priority to only get the things that mattered the most. Luckily, because his kids were still freshlings, they tended to like simple things, like PB&J or premade sandwich wraps, so he could buy those in bulk and save them for a while. Though, when concerning himself and his partner, he was far more careful on what he bought and how much he spent on it. Most of the time, he just bought cold cuts and simple things for dinner that he knew the entire family would enjoy, so it wasn't something insurmountable.
"Mmm... Maybe I could spend less on..." He muttered, tapping his pencil against the page. "... Nah, I think I still have enough room for that..."

Math. Whee. He took the top sheet and passed the rest of the bundle further down, skimming the worksheet before putting it down on his desk. Dropping his pen next to the paper, he went rummaging for a pencil instead, just to be safe.
Rubbing his forehead as he worked through each line, he frowned at one line in particular and then wrote the answer before continuing on. It wouldn't be long until this was his reality, fretting over finances and how to pay for this or that. What was he going to do once he was out of here? What if he and Yue...
Glancing over at her, he couldn't help but frown slightly with worry. Life was complicated as it was, could they survive? Could he survive? She didn't notice, too focused on gathering her bags he suspected, but it was a thought that stuck with him as he turned in the sheet and nodded to the Professor before packing up for the next class.

Ikki wasn't that great at math, but he gave it his best shot and turned in his assignment. He sat back down and began to think about what he would do after he graduated. He might get a part-time job, it would certainly help him. And he was smart enough to build up his funds and save his money.
He was scared of being out on his own, he didn't know what to do about it. Koharu would be lost without him, but she was starting to do better without him being her rock. Ikki fiddled with his necklace. What if he went into debt? What if he made a mistake and couldn't afford anything? What if Litla was living with him and this happened? He couldn't do that to her... And he decided to use that as motivation to be smart with his money.
He could do this. And he decided this was his most stressful class. It made him stress out about the future.

Eileen walked into the class room and quickly sat down at her desk. She waited patiently for the teacher to hand her the worksheet. Once she recieved the paper, she looked it over to see what she had to do.
Budgeting? Hmm, well I guess I do need this in the future.
As soon as she finished filling out the answers, she grabbed her belongings, stood up from her desk and placed her worksheet on the teachers desk before heading out.
