"There are no dates, I simply feel it will be soon enough. We should be prepared for things to change and make the most of the peaceful time that we have." he smiled reassuringly. "Don't worry, I do not feel like it will creep up on us for a little bit, but perhaps your chance to get Rin back will at least come sooner than you hoped."
He seemed reassured by Melvin's words, losing the hesitance and sadness which had come over him. "You think so? I'm very glad to hear that! I was really beginning to dread that eventuality, my life more and more becomes dependent upon you and Rin, without Horace I simply do not know what I would do if I was cast out." he closed his eyes and exhaled.
"I hope that this nonsense with America has not made you think less of me."

He held Jan's hand, slowly touching the fingers and stroking the top.
"Idon't think less of you. It's more that I'm still trying to figure it all out and wonder if I even should. She is part of your personal life. One before Rin and I interrupted it. I can understand how exes can still hold a piece of your heart. I just don't get what you two had or even have now all they way, and then I wonder if it's my place to even get it. You're entitled to your privacy - but I get worried about your safety."
He removed one hand to place it on Jan's shoulder. "Don't... Be too dependent on me. I'm not good with that. I'm not that strong. With what you said. With something coming. Can you promise me - that if things get bad, don't do what she did. Don't save me."
He looked now, blue eyes looking at Jan's sad yet serious.

"She possesses no part of my heart." he said, calmly. "It is all resolutely in my chest where it belongs. As far as understanding goes, I suspect it would be impossible to really explain the way things presently are, I am not even sure I understand myself. They simply are, and I am in no danger as long as I am intact, which I am. You should not worry half as much."
He gave Melvin a slow, thoughtful look.
"I promise I will not save you." he said.
"If that is what you want."

He smiled, though it was slightly pained yet oddly came with some relief. Whatever eas coming him would come only to him and not be taken by him from caring, good people. Not from Jan or Rin.
"If .. she is hearing everything, then I need you to keep her from doing the same. She already did this once. I can't go living if she does that again. I'd hate myself too much to go on if I took both her and then you from this world."
He pulled away, adjusting his glasses as he looked at the room and two boxes, te last he emptied, of Rin's processions.
"I wouldn't deserve to live at that point." He whispered.
He glanced at the door and then gave a short chuckle. "Here I worry about America hurting you and I'm probably the one that could cause you the most harm." His voice cracked near te end but he coughed to clear his throat and cover up the noise.

Lawrence gave Melvin a slow curious look. He seemed to be upset, a fact confirmed by the cracking of his voice. Why on earth he was upset when Lawr had just agreed to his request was rather beyond the pale man. It was only when he realised the nature of the possessions he had been looking at that the penny dropped.
"Oh no, you won't do me any harm." he said. "I am rather difficult to harm. As long as you do not turn your weapon on me, or attack me - and those things HAVE HAPPENED - I will be quite, quite intact." He reached out to rub Melvin's shoulder.
"Don't worry about me. And I will be sure to tell Rin that she shouldn't do the same thing for you again too. Failing that I won't actually let her, I am in charge of my own body most of the time." The other man got a reassuring smile. "If she was here I am sure she would tell you to cheer up, things are going well for now."

"He welcomed the hand on his shoulder and looked back at Jan, smiling in appreciation for his always caring nature. "I wouldn't do that to you. I would never turn on you unless I had lost my mind. And....if that happens. If I lost myself, then again, save yourself than me. I'd rather not wake up to see you hurt if that happened. You two are too important to me to know I caused you any more harm."
Slowly, he moved closer and moved a hand around Jan's back and up to the man's shoulder, holding it and then kneeling to give a soft peck on the man's cheek. Light, as usual. He gave a brief inhale of the man, glad he was using Rin's products he had specially purchased to recover the faint smell of her he had been missing all this time. However, it was intermingled with Jan's own natural smell. It wasn't the same as before, but it was still pleasant.
"Does she not always hear you?"

"I do not think you would harm me, it is why I trust you as much as I do and there is nothing to be gained by dreading all the things which could and might happen when we should be savouring the present."
His eyes fluttered closed and he inclined his head slightly indulgently in the direction of the other man. He did not particularly agree with Rin's former choice of products, many of them were too rich in smell or not as expensive as what he personally would have chosen, but it kept Melvin happy and at present a happy Melvin was important to maintain.
"No." he said. "As I say, I am in control of my body as a spirit medium and a competent one. I can of course "switch off" hearing her voice if I require my own peace and quiet, being unable to escape the spirit world would be unhealthy."

He leaned only to set an elbow on his knee and bend to place his forehead on his palm, taking a breath.
"I wonder - if I deserve this. That if I deserve a second chance to help her - when I was the one that took her away." He didn't look at Jan, but looked down at his knee.

"You killed her?"
He didn't seem too bothered by this.

"She didn't seem to care too much whatever you did, she simply told me you fixated too much on it and not enough on what you had." he rolled his shoulders in a shrug.
"I think that perhaps the only one fixating on the moment of her death might be you. She is more concerned with her life."

He looked back down, placing his chin now on his palm as he stared at the ground.
"I...suppose so. To think she is less traumatized by her ...leaving me..than I was. I just.." He paused again, trying to sort thoughts out. It was harder to tell what he felt, what he thought about something that had felt so person to another person. For the longest time, it was almost a closed experience. Despite Rep being there, he didn't seem to be as shaken up by the experience and because of that, he was excluded from the private hell he submerged himself in days and weeks after Rin's passing.
"I was just so worthless......so useless to her......and because of that....." He flinched, focus wavering as he swallowed hard. Despite Rin being back into his life, it still did not mean he didn't owe her everything. It just meant hope wasn't lost.
Quiet for a while, he glanced back at Jan, lifting his head only enough to ask. "I haven't changed. I'm not stronger. What if it happens again and I loose you too?"

Lawrence gave Melvin a thoughtful look as he spoke, not interrupting, trying to measure the emotions he could not entirely understand, the idea of focusing on a death so intently, particularly a death which could not have been prevented or helped made no logical sense to him. Yet Melvin did let it get to him, constantly pursued by the ghost of what happened and beholden to a lie which purported to be his girlfriend.
Lawr opened his arms in an oddly open and vulnerable sort of gesture, inviting Melvin to a hug without directly saying a word in that direction.
"You are far stronger than you were and much changed." he said. "Even if you do not see it." He looked a little haughty. "And I have no intention of anything happening to me. I do not need to be protected Melvin, I can look after myself. It will not happen again."
