It was hot out, but he didn't mind the weather, Arorangi sweeping his dreads away from his sweaty face, his s**t clinging wetly to his chest. He gave another cheerful laugh.

"You should take some time to yourself, then!" he said brightly, leaping back as the staff cracked across his legs. Arorangi stumbled a little and readjusted his footing in order to smack a return blow across Matt's torso. Their spar was going well, he thought.

"I spent a lot of time learning how to do yardwork, which is the only reason I am in shape as I am!" he said and grinned. "But I have never fought monsters, that is new to me."

Sweat clung to Matt's tank top as the loose strands of hair falling out of his bun clung to the back of neck. He didn't pay any attention to it however, even the sun bearing down into his eyes he didn't seem to notice anymore.

Shaking his head he chuckled a little at the thought of taking more vacation away. What would he really do? Most of his vacations he taken where on his own and he spent a little too much money on luxuries, but for most parts of it was rather dull alone. "It's ok work keeps me busy for the most part so I don't really think about getting away, there is always someone in the infirmary or so on."

His breath leapt into his throat as Arorangi spear hit him just below the ribs. Rubbing the spot Matt shuffled back before returning a hard swing to the hunter’s arm. So far Matt wasn't doing horribly but he knew it was getting closer to his fizzle out and lose state.

"I won't lie I didn't do a lot of yard work, I mean I stayed in decent shape doing things outdoors like surfing, running, so on but nothing on the real heavy side of training. School didn't help either too many hours spent studying." Matt grinned in return, "I don't think I have as many monsters as others but I'll be ready at least. If you don't mind me asking what did you do before coming here?"

Matt was very agile and strong, which Arorangi appreciated. He rather enjoyed sparring with those with more experience than him, because it gave him a chance to hone his own abilities and skills. Even if it took him a while, even if he lost the spars or fights, he still felt capable, because he was at the very least holding his own.

"I did not do work, per say," said Arorangi with a laugh. "I grew up in New Zealand, after all, and we had a large field where we grew a lot of our vegetables and fruits. I learned from a young age how to scale a coconut tree to get the coconuts!" he added, and grinned. "It is much easier to do when you are smaller, after I got larger, I kept having to rebalance my weight because I had to be careful!"

A glancing blow was thrust towards Matt's shoulder.

Despite his larger size Arorangi did well to keep up with him and he seemed to have a more natural talent in handling his spear than Matt. He could remember his first year he kept awkwardly digging one end of his spear into the ground and on occasion would hit himself or twist his wrist the wrong way. There was no confidence in his skills then, not even after his second year he wasn't very good.

"So you spent most of your time around the farm that's work. I don't think I have ever climbed a tree, or at least not to the top just sort of halfway or at least to the first branch I could sit on, but I get what you mean. The same thing with surfing if you go a few months without and hit a growth spurt" Not that he was entirely afraid of heights just never really seemed a necessary. "The fresh fruit sounds great even as a snack now." Matt's stomach growled as the thought of fresh strawberries and some toasted coconut it was a terrible idea to bring up the whole farm thing now he would be thinking about untill shift.

Twirling the spear Matt jabbed forward towards the lower part of Arorangi's legs.

Arorangi wiped his brow with a tattooed hand, sweat sliding down the side of his face. It really was exceptionally hot out here, even with his tendency towards warmer weather, and the light humidity was making everything feel a little thicker and more cloying than usual.

"Not necessarily a farm," said Arorangi with a laugh, leaping back away from Matt's next jab, though the speartip caught him on the knee, making him stumble. "We did not really have animals, unless you count the stray ducks and geese. But yes, I spent most of my time in the fields, gathering food or planting food."

He swung the spear towards Matt's arm.

"Climbing is easy when you have done it all your life, it is difficult to pick up again after stopping for a while," said Arorangi, grinning. "I am not sure I could climb any of these trees now."

It wasn’t until Arorangi wiped his forehead that Matt noticed the tattoos on the back of his hands. He had a few of his own but they were far more hidden, or at least where when he wore sleeves and collars. Somehow Matt couldn’t get past the idea of not looking professional when it came to working in the infirmary, the whole idea was ingrained despite not having a strict dress code. As close as not looking to a normal a stiff in a suit was the length of his hair and blue stripes of color in it, Matt wouldn’t even wear the few piercing he had in his ears in the infirmary. He felt a little jealous, but more so mad at himself for always setting a restriction.

“Farms don’t necessarily have to have animals on it, at least I didn’t think they all did?” Growing up along the edge of a large city and near a beach, farms weren’t as common and as closes he had been was in a car. “I don’t really know a whole lot about farming beyond sticking seeds into the ground, watering and then picking them so I can’t really say what makes them a farm or not. What else did you do there? I mean for fun I guess besides surfing and fishing?”

Matt struggled not to lose his spear, as Aroranig’s attack hit just above his hand reminding him a smack from a spoon. It stung as he held it shifting his feet in a defensive stance, as Matt didn’t attempt a return attack.

“That’s a shame, climbing tress would have been helpful, or at least in a camping aspect. I have at least tried to surf occasional.” Not nearly as much as he should considering his experiencer last time he had went to a beach.

Arorangi's entire left arm was just a full sleeve of tattoos, all of them intricate and tribal in nature; symbols of his Maori heritage, which he wore proudly and obviously on his dark skin. It had taken him several years to get them all completed, but it was a Maori tradition to get the ta moko, one that Arorangi himself liked to continue. It wasn't necessarily expected, but it was something that made him happy to do anyway.

"I did a lot of work around at other people's houses!" he said brightly. "I did repair work, fixing roofs, helping carry things, things like that!"

He swept the spear out and knocked it against Matt's side.

“Did you get all of your tattoos done in New Zealand? Or did you get most of them after Deus?” It was an odd question that rose to his mind as Matt thought about his upcoming promotion from being there for three years. Maybe a new tattoo was the way to celebrate along with a small vacation of his own, somewhere else besides Vegas. Preferably somewhere that didn’t involve him running into another hunter.

He was sure that New Zealand had cities, some maybe even larger than his own, but from what he mentioned Arorangi didn’t sound as if he had grown up in one. Something Matt had to adjust to when moving to Deus, you couldn’t just leave at all hours of the night expect to find things open or something to do with spare time. “Did you grow up in a small town or city? Something where you knew a lot of the people there or did a lot of your family live in the same area?”

The spear cracked into Matt’s side as he grunted from the sharp pain below his ribs. He stopped only for a second to rub the spot still keeping his spear and feet in a defensive stance before looking back at Arorangi and grinning. “Your really good using a spear, have you done a lot of practice with it since you got here at Deus?”

"All done in New Zealand!" said Arorangi cheerfully, in spite of the sudden question. He brandished his arm towards Matt, displaying the dark brown symbols. "These are the te moko; they are a Maori traditional that has been around for many years! It is not always required to get them, but I like to show my heritage!"

He took a few steps back, readjusting his hold on the spear. "I grew up in a city, but my home was a little farther away from the main part!" said Arorangi with a smile. "All of my family was from Auckland, it is the biggest city in all of New Zealand."

A laugh escaped him.

"Only spear fishing," said Arorangi, eyes twinkling as he rushed forward again."

“They are pretty cool looking, was it a lot of pain? I mean any different than a normal tattoo pain?” They were rather interesting to look at not that Matt would have gotten any himself. Consciously he would have felt as if he was taking something that had meaning to someone else and all for the dumb reason of looking cool.

“Well s**t I had that wrong, I thought you maybe lived out somewhere in a small town.” Matt spoke without thinking about his words first, his face getting a little red from the embarrassment of his assumption. It had been stupid for him to think that farms couldn’t exist near cities, or at least somewhere “ You know….one of those towns where everyone knows everyone, but a city your lucky if you meet half of them….. sorry. Uh… I guess you got a long with your family well, to all live near one another?”

Swinging his spear to one side Matt shifted a foot in front as he moved from defensive to a low forward thrust at Arorangi’s center chest. “Spear fishing is pretty intense practice.”

"It did," said Arorangi, with a sunny smile, sweeping the spear in a wide arc. He was getting a little winded, his stamina wavering underneath the waves of oppressive heat that washed over him. "But it is a tradition that I feel strongly about, so I did not mind so much."

A booming laugh escaped him as he caught the flush on Matt's cheek. Arorangi waved a dismissive hand.

"Do not worry, mate, it is all right! I do not mind! And yes, I was raised just by my father, but he was a good man! I was an only child, so after he died, I went to the States to work!"

The thrust caught him in the chest, sending him stumbling back. Arorangi dragged his spear tip across the grass, making a line in the dirt, and twisted his body to accommodate his next parry. "It is, and sometimes it is very hard, but that was how we got to eat sometimes!"

Matt could understand the wanting to keep tradition alive; his family on the other hand didn’t have any or at least none that he had known about. The closest thing to tradition was Matt following in his own father’s footsteps somewhat in becoming a doctor. Obviously somewhere the plan had changed.

He could feel his top cling from the sweat to his back he paused for a moment as Arorangi laughed, it was harder to breath with the humidity, almost as if he was swimming in some sort of pool. “Sorry about your father. Where did you live in the states?” Matt gave him a somewhat apologetic look; he hadn’t met to dig up something persona or something the hunter hadn’t wanted to talk about.

Matt took a few steps to the side as Arorangi’s spear collided into his side again, his breath feeling even heavier than before. Lunging forward he swung his spear low just above the ground before turning it sharply upwards towards Aroranigi’s arm and shoulder.

Arorangi stumbled backwards, wheezing from Matt's last blow.

"Do not worry, he was a good man, he died very peacefully," he said with a smile. "It is sad, yes, but he is in a better place, and that is what I believe. He left me with a lot of good thoughts and good memories, which I very much appreciate! And I lived in Nebraska when I was in the states!"

Arorangi held up both hands in front of him, his spear disappearing as he laughed.

"I think I am done, mate, that was a very good spar!"

“Was Nebraska a huge change for you and did you like living there? I don’t know a lot people who say they love living in Nebraska, except for a few die hard cowboys.” Matt’s view beyond the west coast were pretty dim, he had grown up all his life seeing sun and barely getting too cold. Most of what he knew about the Midwest and east coast he had seen on tv or occasionally visited.

“I am glad you have good memories of him.” Not knowing what else to say, he had his own share of loss but unlike Arorangi he was not nearly as cheerful about the matter.

Holding out a hand he grinned, “You are really great at sparring. Tell you the truth this is as close as I have ever gotten to winning or holding out this long.”

"It was a bit of an adjustment," said Arorangi with a laugh. "I was not used to living in a place that was not by a beach, it was quite a change! That is why I feel better here than I did there, because although we are fighting monsters, there is something very reassuring about being near sand and water!"

He reached out and accepted Matt's handshake with a hearty one of his own. "Thank you, I am very glad that you were able to hold out as long!" Arorangi beamed at the other man. "It was quite enjoyable, you have a great deal of strength, mate! We will have to do this again sometime!"
