The answers were short, and the very last part had a sullen edge in it's diction. 'Benefit' ran hollow as a word, more sardonic than actual relief. Neither really showed on the man's face. Blackwell just looked tired the way most introverts did ten minutes in to conversations with strangers. "It wasn't meant a slight. Just a question- I was under the impression you'd invited this occasion that we get to know each other better as a gateway to re-asking me, for whatever reason, questions I've refused to answer before. "

"You are curious as a person, like no one I've ever met. A different culture, for certain, and that lends itself to curious questions meant to facilitate successful communication. If it is not so, it is a simple matter to wish each other's day fare and return to our regular errands. " Quenton left a pause there, in case the other man wished to interject and say it was or wasn't so. In case Blackwell, determining that whatever drive originally spurred this wash, wished the interaction over.

"Will you answer me this, if only this alone- Do you only ever act based on a need, then, Blackwell? Acquisition of food, sleep, money, establishing society to increase longevity and protection- law, business, and engineering. Science. These are necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. We pursue them and feel finally alive. We enrich them, and remind ourselves that we must constantly look at things in a different way- the difference expands both what we do for survival and to make life worth surviving. How do you see and divide these experiences of life in your priorities?"

Quenton's response hinted more at patience than reactionary motive. As someone naturally terse, Shale met a profusion of individuals who took offense to his forceful mannerisms when he wasn't actively practicing more proper speech. The fact that Quenton was not one to lose his levelheadedness over charged responses acted in his favor. "You're not wrong." The purpose of engagement was exactly that - a means to acquaint with one another - and little more than that beyond his own personal interests. Quenton's hand jewelry drew interest from his own working with bones and leathers, yet he hadn't found an explanation for the piece.

Shale remained silent through Quenton's commentary, surrendering no response during the breadth of silence that stretched around them. He watched during the blonde's pause as he sought the usual body language signs that informed him far more of another than tone or diction. Nothing yielded personal offense.

"I didn't before I moved here." It was a curious question - for who stopped to consider when they consciously spent time for entertainment? "But life here demands much more attention to needs. It's a much faster pace. Most sacrifices were made against living and for survival. My priorities need sorting." Even sleep suffered somewhat in his latest personal assignments, and most of his days were carefully distributed among research, Negaverse duties, and working to establish steady income. Moving also entailed a long and arduous process with he and Damian still struggling to tweak the apartment to their liking.

At least Quenton's question clarified the missing portion to his life's current upset.

"Do you live or do you survive?" Shale defaulted to brevity if they intended to get to know each other past a socially acceptable basis.

"I do both. Challenge is pleasure. My time being filled with frantic studies, sketches and sculpture, and cats are done for living. Teaching and service industry are done for survival. " Blackwell was neither pleasant nor unpleasant company, it was proving. His verbage remained short and to the point, which could be refreshing if there was meat to it, but Shale's statements offered no specifics thus far beyond his brother's name, he was a hunter, and had had access to coffee and tea. It came down to whether the curiosity of different circumstance was worth the continued tooth-at-a-time pulling. Regular people tended to elaborate on smaller questions when having sharing time. The reticence was getting conspicuous of either a one-sided affair or something like hope for a blackmail phishing based on the illegality of the bones.

Everything requires an exact question. Is it viable to estimate there's enough to this man worth investigating, or worth the risk. Not challenging conversationally, unless in being obtuse and terse. He does not say what project he was working on still, he does not say what it is he wishes to learn in the interim, what it is that is really troubling his brother to pain, who the friend it...nothing. This is all getting nowhere. I may have spoken thrice as many words as he already, and his speech gets shorter yet. This is pointless. From his tones, I expect he's come to the same conclusion in weighing out the boon of the story against further dealings with me. Quenton didn't ask further questions, but tidied what there was of place setting and trash removal to one of the campus bins. When he returned, he held out his hand to the other man. "I wish you luck, then, Blackwell, with survival and living. And with Slate, and your friend. It has been a fine afternoon, spent in company different from any I've met before. "

Shale watched Quenton in silence when he departed to the bins. He was, at least, polite throughout the whole of the conversation. As someone who found less value than most in human company, Shale did not find his company wholly objectionable. He learned more of Quenton during that time, and found none of it compelling for any brand of care kept. He did not find that objectionable, either.

He stood upon Quenton's return and accepted the offered hand in learned brevity. Touch often elicited adverse reactions, he learned, and consciously reminded himself to keep it to a minimum. "Thank you. Good luck in your studies." The words sounded flat and meaningless in comparison to Quenton's grandiose diction, but he found them no less meaningful.

When the blonde departed, Shale started on picking up his own wares. Tupperware and silverware were piled back into his bag with less care than before. While he worked, he thought of Slate and his predicament - and wondered whether any interference he imposed upon Slate's conditions might make a difference. Meeting with Quenton proved a distraction from it, but only amounted to that. Shale was starting to suspect that distractions were more a detriment than a benefit.

By the time Shale left the area, his mind turned fully to his duties - to survival over living.
