"But Leslie," said Chance plaintively, "How are you ever going to get yourself a cute girlfriend - or a cute boyfriend, I still don't know how you like to roll - if you don't treat them with care and devotion, Leslie, that's how relationships work."
This was a lot of the pot calling the kettle black, because a) Otto was not Chance's boyfriend, and b) Chance did not really show a helluva lot of devotion to anything. Care, yes, but he was mostly just having fun needling at Leslie. He made his way over to the pair and fiddled with the lock on the cuff.

At the mention of girlfriend or boyfriend, Leslie's hackles raised, a storm coming over his face. He furiously worked at the manacle, resisting the urge to touch the back of his neck where teeth marks made divots in his skin, a permanent scar. A reminder. "No hugs," Leslie barked, one of the manacles coming free. "I don't need a ******** girlfriend." The boyfriend unmentioned. Unacknowledged. Undeserved. "And even if I did, being caring would be being something not my ******** self, so what'd even be the ******** point?" He'd forgotten how much of a rise he got out of Leslie when the subject of sex or dating or anything involving girls or boys came up. Chance arched a brow at him as he fiddled with the locks, smiling beningly at the golem, which beamed happily back at him.
"Maybe you'd be less of a bulldog if you were getting some," Chance deadpanned, just to be obnoxious. Status Stage: 4Your HP: 25 / 50 Princess HP: 20 / 20 Stage 1 Recoveries: 1 Stage 2 Flags and Instincts: 0 Stage 4 Bonus HP: 0

This ******** guy.Leslie dragged the giggling Princess Rep back through the traps, and Chance's defense held. He at least had that going for him, he guessed. Too bad about his shitty personality. After a moment, he gave Chance a baleful stare, thrown over his shoulder, a grin to his lips, however slight. "Who's saying I'm not? You ever just ******** think-- for one ******** second-- that this is just how I am?" The defenses were solid, which was nice. Chance felt very satisfied with their progress so far, even if the golem Rep was giving them both a smarmy, starry eyed expression that probably would never have been caught dead on the actual Rep's face.
Chance felt his amusement growing.
"Yes," he said with a grin right back at Leslie. "I'm pretty sure this is exactly who you are. But you make it so easy to needle you, because you get so ******** defensive over s**t."
He shrugged, unabashed.

"Jesus," Leslie muttered-- not for the first time, and certainly not the last-- and was intensely relieved that they'd made it to the end. They gave the clingy golem back to the tech, and Leslie felt as though he physically needed to wash his hands. "All my ******** life I've been needled, I'm just ******** tired of everyone else's s**t." He cast Chance a baleful glare. "Yours included, you ********. My ******** life is mine and no one else's." His brows rose. For a few moments, Chance was surprisingly silent, his eyes moving speculatively over Leslie and his annoyed expression, the Rep golem thankfully no longer a distraction with its sugary sweet comments and batting eyes.
"I think that's the most honest I've ever seen you," he said finally, a smile flickering across his face. Chance raised his hands in a gesture of submission. "If you want me to stop poking the bear, I'll stop."

Leslie snorted and rolled his eyes, lighting a cigarette. "You don't know enough about me to decide what's honest and what's not," he said, frankly. "I'm not going to tell you what to do and s**t. You just think you know more than you do, and that really ******** pisses me off." Nonetheless, he extended the pack to chance, eyebrow raised, the offer clear.

He laughed, completely unperturbed by Leslie's bluntness. "You're right, I don't," said Chance, his smile much less a smirk and more laid back. "And believe me, I'm well aware of what I do and don't know - in case you haven't already noticed, I lived a pretty sheltered life growing up, I know jack s**t about a lot of s**t."
The offered box made him raise his brows in mild surprise.
"Thanks," said Chance, but he reached out and took one anyway, in spite of the fact that he didn't actually smoke.

Leslie snorted, rubbing his head with his thumb and forefinger. "Honestly, I keep forgetting that," he remarked, lighting his own cigarette, offering the lighter to Chance, oblivious. "We grew up like, twenty ******** miles away from each other, and we were worlds ********' apart. Life is nuts."

"Yep," said Chance, reaching out to accept the lighter, the cigarette held between his teeth. A memory surfaced briefly, flitting through his thoughts like smoke.
"Gotta teach your s**t son a lesson, Margie, he doesn't know how to respect his elders."
He flicked the lighter open, lit the cigarette, and slid it out of his mouth before he could actually inhale, Chance passing the lighter back to Leslie. "I seem to recall you coming into my bookshop and causing trouble every now and then. But really, coming from Detroit..."
A faint smirk touched his lips. "Not exactly a paradise, no matter how you spin it."

The lighter disappeared into one of his many pockets. "Yeah, yeah. I still cause trouble now, it's just easier to get away with it because nobody gives a s**t." After a beat and an observation, Leslie finally took notice that Chance wasn't actually, well. Smoking. "If you don't want it, it's not a big ******** deal. Abbi hates that I do anyway and s**t."

His lips quirked upwards in a slight smile.
"Abbi's a good girl," said Chance mildly, holding the cigarette up and giving it a scrutinizing look. "And it's not that I hate smoking, I don't mind when other people do it, normally. I just haven't smoked at all since one of my mother's boyfriends decided to put out his cigarette on my ribs."
He said this in a very matter-of-fact, relaxed tone of voice, almost as though he was talking about the weather.

"Yes," Leslie agreed, emphatic. "She is." Abbi was probably the best thing in his life. Stability was, apparently, something he'd been craving. "That sucks." He bit down on his cigarette to use both hands to lift up his shirt, revealing a spattering of familiar looking burn scars on his ribs and hips. There were others, too. Old ones, but Leslie didn't let it linger. "Nicotine clears my ********' head, though, so." He shrugged, blowing smoke in the air. "Thanks for the company, Bones."

The scars were given a quick, appraising look, and they were similar to the ones that Chance had sprinkled across his own ribs; except his were now mostly covered by the elaborate tattoo that spread over his skin.
"Whatever works, right?" he said mildly, glancing at the cigarette in his hand with a slight curiosity. Chance's gaze flickered back towards Leslie, a slow smile spreading across his face that was almost a smirk, but not quite.
"Anytime, Miller."
