"Oh. Thanks for coming Melvin." She gave a wry smile, fidgeting a little under his scrutiny as she averted her gaze and recounted what got her into this situation in the first place. "Nellie fought on the beach against one of the red-eyed hunters. Was overwhelmed - face was scratched up, was choked and shoved a few times into the sand. They've already tried to get most of the sand out..."

Nellie smiled at the myriad of phrases that Horace used to describe the girl whom she had asked about. "Nellie would like to meet Hattie some day." Relaxing back against the pillows, she giggled and waited for him to begin reading. This shouldn't be too bad given what she had already been through.
