"Appreciate it." He grunted, as Ever landed his own solid hit. Well then, it was time to get back into the game.

Or at least try to, as he shifted his weight to strike, and only managed an off-point scrape.

At least Riley hit. Ever's response was disproportional, overly-obvious: swinging too-hard in a way that held very little grace and was way too telegraphed. Enthusiasm overtaking training and instincts.

There was a moment, in the wake of Ever's over-enthusiastic and unbalanced attack, that Ripley saw an opening he could take advantage of. He shifted his weight quickly, hissing against the protest of his arm, and swung his sword against Ever's side.

The voice in his head steadied him just a bit -- along with the pain along his side, dulled through his shield -- making Ever draw in a breath and ground himself. He was usually better than this at least --

And as soon as the thought went through his head, he saw an opening and leaned in to take it, the point of his rapier raking sharply across Ripley's shield.

Ripley held no illusions about his fighting skills - he knew he was awful. He would remain awful until the bitter end, but he could always strive to be less awful, in that he could learn to fight semi-decently while being injured. After all, he spent a lot of his time in pain, so it made sense to learn how to be less awful - but still quite terrible - even under these circumstances.

But it was no surprise to him that, the moment he tried to spark his charged attack, Wilhelm sputtered and put itself out, missing by a mile.

"Augh."

Ripley got a flash of a smile, Ever still feeling good from the staggering effect of that blow -- his head cocked to the side, easily stepping out of the way of Ripley's charge.

"You missed," he offered, as he turned to strike at Ripley. And promptly missed, himself.

"Thank you, I hadn't noticed." Ripley said sarcastically, about to guard himself when, somehow, Ever missed. "Great job." He added in a flat drone.

Wilhelm got stuck in the ground, a feat he hadn't noticed until he tried to attack, and after a moment of staring at his weapon with clear pain, he offered a sigh of defeat.

"You know what? I don't think we're going to get anywhere today."

"I don't know about that." He was laughing behind it, though, something helpless -- because this was, maybe, the lamest fight he'd been in. They might as well as be slapping each other, limp-wristed ******** that they seemed to me. The thought made him laugh again -- and so the fact that his blow actually landed came as a complete surprise to Ever.

Ripley decided that Ever was right: the only way out of this, was to laugh about it. They were fighting horribly, and thank whatever god was responsible that they were doing it together, from the safety of the training island. Being this bad on the field would mean certain death, after all.

Ever's blow landed at the same time Ripley had managed to pull Wilhelm from the ground, and he simply allowed the momentum to continue long enough to allow the blade to scratch at his opponent.

"This is embarrassing."

It made the laughter swell a bit, absorbing Ever so thoroughly that his swing went wide and he completely missed this time.

"Part of me feels like maybe we should just put down our weapons and start slapping each other, instead." He almost hiccupped it, laughing between words.

"We might have to. Might be more effective." For a second there, he had been about to forfeit. If his next attack missed, he was seriously going to throw in the towel and call it quits. They were just doing too poorly to continue, and the last thing either of them needed was for a higher ranking officer to watch their spar through the security footage.

It would be a one way ticket to worse things, he was certain of it.

Thankfully, as luck would have it, even as he was laughing, and as Ever was doubled over, he actually landed a blow. It wasn't his most powerful, but nor was it a passing scratch. It surprised him more than anything else, and it showed in his usually expressionless face.

"Jesus. where did that come from?"

"...luck. It's sheer luck. God." He was still laughing, and it made his swing a little rough -- but at least this time Ever collided. And while Ripley was nervous about making an a** of himself on camera, it seemed Ever had no such concerns or compunctions. He was more than willing to look like a hopeless idiot, just barely nicking the edge of Ripley's shield with the tip of his dagger --

"We need to focus. Stop making me laugh."

"I'm trying." He insisted, almost grumpily so, but when Ever only nicked him, and when his return parry was nothing more than a blow to the air at his side, he couldn't help but chuckle again.

"You know what? I forfeit. You win." He dropped Wilhelm, and held his hands up to sign defeat. "This is just to awful. We're really, really awful."

"...are you sure?" It was still with a laugh behind it, Ever's own weapon propped up on one shoulder as he looked Ripley over. His shield, at least, was relatively intact: still holding strong around him, and Amory pushing in the back of his mind to keep going, to use another charge --

"I mean. Maybe it's for the best. This death by a thousand cuts thing is going to take all day..."

"I'm sure." Ripley desummoned Wilhelm, who reappeared on his wrist as a sleek, black-and-white watch. If Ever attacked him now, he'd be attacking an unarmed opponent. "I'm sure we have better things to do with our time than paper cutting each other to shield breaks." He chuckled, shaking his head.

"Congratulations to the…victor…?"
