The blow was enough to send Lawrence sprawling, and even as he nimbly pulled himself back to his feet he could feel the shield flickering and struggling, Butch whining in desperation and terror. But he did not back off or surrender, it did not even occur to him to stop until he was more or less forced to. There was still that link, that thread that filled his senses with the foreign taste of emotion, incomprehensible but tantalising.

He ran forward with that same strange jolt of speed and once again sunk his talons into Horace's shield at his chest, as if he sought to rip out that shard of chill himself. Once again it blossomed and spread and the void took and took and took.

Lawr let go only when it became overwhelming, staggering back a few giddy steps, eyes flashing with need and the restlessness that passed for desire in the cold man.

With those claws plunged into his shield, he felt it again - the cold ache, so painful, bittersweet. But it was more, it was better than the dull, muted feel that Jan had left him with in the moments between strikes. This, Horace thought wildly, was how a person became addicted. It was not for the high, but to combat the lows. He knew that people would argue that the unyielding cold wasn't better, but it was at least sharper.

And when Jan danced away, he reached out and pulled him back roughly, twisting, spikes digging into Jan's arms. The blade at his forearm sliced at Jan's shield as Horace's arms curved around him. He pressed the cold of his chest against Jan, not thinking straight beyond feeling another's body heat. Abruptly, he realized Butch was desummoned and Jannisari melted from his arms as well. He leaned forward, burying his face in the crook of Jan's neck.

Lawrence doggedly pursued the thread of feeling and emotion, or what he assumed were those things right up until the point where he could not any longer. There was a shriek, a scream that was somewhere between canine and human and then it cut off as the claws desummoned and once again he found himself without a hand, and without a shield.

The link severed, leaving nothing but the silence of his thoughts - of who he was - behind. The warmth and the potential for investigation was gone, all of it was gone and he was distinctly human again. He leaned against Horace without hesitation or resistance, like a deactivated robot.

He needed to get stronger, needed to find a way to strengthen the bond. A simple surprise attack would no longer suffice in this strange world of weapons and shields.

He needed to get stronger or he needed to seek out another way. Something had locked them down before, could it be learned to lock others down in future?

"Well fought." he said and then smiled faintly. "Are you going to carry fragile lil old me back to my room after being so mean to me?"

"I didn't think I'd win," he said, sounding surprised. Horace was used to losing spars; he liked it, liked to feel his shield tear away. It always felt kind of like wet tissue paper tearing apart into soggy nothing. Horace kissed Jan's shoulder and pulled back a bit.

He made a derisive sound at the other man's words. "You're neither old, nor fragile, though 'lil I guess can be applicable. And I was hardly mean." Grinning, Horace slid his hand down Jan's arm to briefly intertwine their fingers. He was feeling more normal now - the horrible chill had faded from his chest. Without warning, he bent and abruptly hoisted Jan up into his arms, princess-carry style. He was light and thin and Horace would have easily carried him even without the increased strength that being a hunter afford him.

"You were my nurse once upon a time," he said teasingly. "Should I be yours this time?"
