"Mmm, but you don't want to hold it as if you're trying to choke it. The grip needs to be firm. A light touch would have it slipping out of your grasp and too tight would just leave you in pain." Illian replied, wondering why Jelanii was looking at him strangely. It dawned on him that the man most likely hadn't had training with a staff or spear or any other weapon that had a shaft and so wouldn't really know what he was talking about.
"But you are correct, a good grip is needed to have a good technique. It wouldn't matter how you held it if your performance was poor." He flexed his fingers in Jelanii's hold, "If you wouldn't mind?" He said, when the other asked if he should begin, otherwise he would end up running at the mouth on a tangent about proper ways to utilize a staff in combat.

"Yes, I suppose you would know best on the subject. My experience with the...staff has been fairly limited. Though I plan to learn it in the future if things go well." He really tried not to think of their conversation possibly having a double meaning, but he couldn't help it and the thoughts going through his head...vaguely he wondered if Illian always wore his gloves or if he took them off... Jelanii put pressure on Illian's hand, firmly putting those thoughts away. Right now he was helping his new found...friend with pain in his hands from gripping his shaft, no staff, too hard.

"Practice. If I learned anything it was from practicing with it." Illian replied before wincing. This hand hurt a lot more than the other one, probably because his left hand felt like one giant throbbing bruise while his right barely had any pain in it at all. It didn't bode well for training later that night, or even in a few days. He had to let his hands heal or he'd end up damaging them worse and only delaying the healing.
"I know you said the pain shouldn't be too bad, but I feel a pinching in my elbow." He said with a frown, "I take it that isn't supposed to happen?" The pinching came from how he was holding his arm, which was at an odd sort of angle with a stiffness to his shoulders.

Jelanii shook his head, concerned. "No, that shouldn't happen." He gave Illian a critical look, noticing the way he was holding himself. He frowned. "I think you're hurt a bit more than you've let on." He nodded his head. "Sit. I think you'll need more than looking at your hand." Silently he was grateful for the healing training his mother insisted on teaching him. Her words, "If you're going to learn to fight, then you also need to learn to heal," ringing in his head.

"It wouldn't be a surprise." Illian said as he sat again, glad that Istanell had left to find healing supplies. He'd managed to distract the other long enough that he'd forgotten about the cut on his arm, and how stiffly he'd been holding himself. "I've probably strained the joint or pulled a muscle."
He flexed his fingers again feeling the ache as it traveled up his arm and settled in his elbow. He made no mention at how conflicted he felt about having Jelanii take a look at him.

Jelanii knelt in front of Illian with a teasing smile "So tell me where it hurts. You might have some tense muscles, In that case I can probably help release some the tension in your back and shoulders, with your permission of course."He raised his hands, wiggling his fingers. "I'm supposedly good with my hands."

"Please." Illian breathed, "I've had hands on me before but they never seemed to help much." Their touch was usually too hard, bringing too much pain for him to try and stay relaxed. The tensing of the muscles undoing whatever good they'd managed to do. It was frustrating as he found himself too sore to do much of anything after one of their 'sessions'.
"I'm sure you are good with your hands." Illian said, turning his head slightly so that he could look at Jelanii sideways. "You're certainly good with your...words."

"Good with my words?" Jelani said with a chuckle. "That's the first time I've been told that. Usually people think I'm a bit too abrasive." He took a moment to consider before standing up and moving behind Illian. "It'll be better from this position."He reached up, his hand hovering over Illian's long silver hair. He had wanted to touch it since he first saw it. He swallowed and reached up, sweeping his hair over his shoulder, resisting the temptation to linger. "I'm going to just see where the knots are first," Jelanii said, then slid his hand over his upper back, tailing up to his shoulder as he searched. He made sure to keep his touch as gentle as possible, but still firm.
