"Are you going to make fun of me if I do?" Callum was relieved that Nimueh didn't turn away from him. If anything the boy seemed to need that moment of reassurance as much as Callum had. He chuckled lazily, moving his hand to the back of the boys head for better support. The feel of dreads between his fingers was nothing new to him, but the touch was fleeting. He squeezed the boy close before loosening his hold. If Nimueh wished to pull away he could, but Callum wouldn't be the one to initiate it.
"It's starting to look like rain." Turning his misting eyes to the canopy above, the young swordsman wiped at an eye. The sky didn't look ill at all, but Callum knew that crying was a sign of weakness to some; better to give a cover for it.

That response was met with soft giggles from the child, who hid his grin against the other's arm. The squeeze seemed like a sign that Callum was finished, so Nimueh moved to pull away - only to pause when Callum tilted his head back. For a moment, the young hybrid furrowed his brows doubtfully, raising his gaze to the sky, his mouth open to refute the ludicrous claim - but then he startled, realizing just what the other meant.
Nimueh always felt like a crybaby, back home - but he'd never actually seen anyone cry, not like this. In this moment, he fiercely sympathized with his mother, who had always been so awkward and almost impatient with him when tears filled his eyes - seeing someone so upset made his stomach hollow out, twisting guiltily as he realized he had no idea how to help. Taking hold of Callum's hand with both of his own and squeezing it, Nimueh peeked up at the fair-haired hybrid, gnawing his lip in thought. Callum hadn't dissolved into sobs - but the indication of emotions that Nimueh felt he understood, and suddenly realizing someone else felt the same way - it startled him, nonetheless.
"It's ok - we can sit here until you -- until the 'rain' goes away." While he had been able to catch, despite his age, that it was a metaphor, Nimueh's subtlety was lacking. However, looking pleased to have played along, Nimueh simply held Callum's hand, smiling brightly at Callum when he finally met his gaze again.

It wasn't something that Callum did often. The sharing of information wasn't the issue, so much as allowing his deeper emotions to get the better of him.
At some point in his life he had wanted to feel accepted. He had yearned for it, and sought it in all the wrong places. Just talking to Nimueh seemed to bring all of this emotions back to the surface. Maybe it was because he saw himself in the boy; who could have said for certain. He took a deep, unsteady breath to calm his nerves, and looked down at Nimueh's hands only to find the boy looking at him. His eyes were reddened, possibly puffy, but what tears had slipped out were already drying out in the humid air.
Callum smiled back at him and gave his hand a squeeze. "Come on- let's get out of here and go find something to eat. I don't know about you but all of this 'rain' has left me with a growling stomach." Of course he wasn't hungry; not really, anyway. He wanted to help Nim find his father so that they might both be able to set themselves to rights. Hiding out like this might have been therapeutic but it wasn't right.

The only negative to wandering back into town was that his papa would find him - and then they'd continue on their way to Tale to meet his grandpa. As a child, he was ignorant of just how big the world was - ignorant that continuing on meant it was possible they'd never meet again. For now, he just grinned, tugging Callum's hand up as if his small strength would be enough to yank the older hybrid upright, "Yeah- my mom packed snacks - I can share, ok?

"That sounds just fine to me." Callum pulled on Nimueh's hand, tugging him towards the more populated section of the jungle. He figured that once they were walking that the boy would lead the way to his family, but in the mean time Callum would act as his guardian. It would be a short lived career, but one of the greatest.
