Jordan sorted several thin wires out of the pile and took out his phone so that he could begin trying to plug them in, on the general principle that Mark was not letting go of his phone but Jordan's phone was a lot like Mark's phone and therefore if a plug fitted in his phone it might fit in Mark's phone. One at a time, careful and methodical, that was the way to do it. "You just have to be pers - per - persit - you have to keep trying," he said. He looked up at the ow, concerned. "Don't plug yourself in, I don't think that works. Oh cool!" He stared at the second phone. "If there are two of you does that mean you're twice as pretty? I want there to be two of me, that's not fair."

"No!" Mark snapped back, "this isn't cool at all! This is like, really, really, really, really serious here." Forgetting entirely about the phone and battery, he looked traumatized and was beginning to feel it too, "If there's two of me, and one of me dies, does that mean the other dies too?"
The 'Death Assistant' looked at Jordan with big, introspective eyes, "If I die, and they die, and I die, and they die, then does that mean I die, and they die?"

Jordan continued trying wires, one at a time, frowning deeply in concentration and doing his best to think about both things at once. He could manage two things, if he really, really concentrated hard. "No, man, I think it's like, having a backup copy. If one of you dies then you still got the other one," he offered after a little while. "Anyway," he went on, and pointed the end of one of the wires that hadn't fit at Mark to punctuate his point, "I've died before, and it didn't stick, so I guess you'd, like, find out when you found out."

There was something very fundamentally wrong with what Jordan had said but Mark was just unable to grasp at it. It was like grasping at straws, they were thin, and well, they came in a little paper wrapper.
"I guess it's like grasping at straws," said Mark in response to Jordan just flat out saying he died before, "they are thin, and well, they come in a little paper wrapper." He was pretty proud of himself for making an eulogy like that on the spot and it was super deep. He tossed the second cell phone into the pile, where it sank into all the wires, as if they had a life of their own.
It was then that a cockroach popped right out of the wires. It was pretty large, when it came to roach sizes, about five inches. Actually, this was abnormally small when it came to Deus roaches, but Mark had absolutely no concept of sizing. In fact, if he saw a larger roach and then two smaller roaches, he probably would have just thought they were absolutely the same size.
There was a moment of silence.
And then Mark, in all his beautiful really really really really good lookingness screamed like a banshee (a very deep eulogy) and grabbed Jordan's arm and pointed right at the offending insect.

Jordan blinked and examined the wire he was holding. "I don't see a little paper wrapper," he said. "Did you lose it? Do we need to find that too?" He jumped violently when Mark screamed, followed the pointy finger, saw the roach, and joined Mark in screaming, because it was a BUG and it was HUGE. Maybe he should smash it, he thought, and stopped screaming, and got a dangerous glint in his eye.

And then, a second roach showed up, and a third one. And a fourth, and a fifth, and well, at this point Mark lost count because he couldn't count higher than all his fingers in one hand.
"What do we do?" Mark whimpered, forgetting that there was a door behind them, because it was closed, and closed doors meant they were not open. "We're trapped." He grabbed Jordan's arm tighter, like a really, really, really, really good looking sloth. "I'm too beautiful to die."
One of the roaches scurried right on top of Mark's (second) cell phone, as if claiming this territory in the name of whatever it is roaches claimed.
