The young man listened intently to her words, taking in that which she could offer him, and that which she only speculated. All of the above were certainly viable, and also theories that he, himself, had pondered. "Forever is it a battle to remain in the light. Darkness is always looming over us, tempting us. Wouldn't you agree?"

He noted her nervous gestures, placing a hand on her shoulder, and smiling gently. "If you would rather not speak of such things I can leave you be. I fear I might have upset you. It was certainly not my intent" he was nothing if not kind, and the idea thar he may have made this woman upset, pierced through his heart like a dagger.

"I truly envy you this shop. I would be in heaven and never leave." He ran his fingers along the shelf, gently touching the voodoo doll that Jessie now fondled. "Perhaps if we simply sit and talk, you can tell me the tales of all these lovely items and books."

He was trying so hard to make amends, to make up for a slight that he was not even certain he had made. But he wanted this woman to be alright, and perhaps, in time they could be friends.

Jessie glanced over at Gabriel and smiled softly. “One evening an old Cherokee Indian told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, ‘My son, there is a battle between two ‘wolves’ inside us all.One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.
The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.’ The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: ‘Which wolf wins?’ The old Cherokee simply replied, ‘The one you feed.’” She paused and added, “Now I don’t know where that story first comes from but it seems to me that while darkness is always there, good will always light the way. After all it was Eleanor Roosevelt who said ‘It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness’.”

Jessie gently fixed the doll so it was sitting on the shelf just right. “I know it was not your intent Gabriel.” She smiled weakly over her shoulder at him before turning back to her books. “The thought of being unable to change the future, that should be what drives people. Not the worry of what already occurred in the past. ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’” She gently tapped on the spine of a random book, “George Santayana. Not sure if I have any of his books shelved down here but I think I have one or two in my personal collection… somewhere.” She shrugged and took a few steps further into the stacks, Gabriel’s hand falling off her shoulder. Time to think of other things.

With a mental shake she decided to change the topic completely. “So now that we got you a good selection from history, are there any other ‘lighter’ topics you are interested in? Any Fiction? Cooking? Astronomy? Oh we have some really neat art books” Jessie turned around and snickered, “If we sit and talk about all the books you will never have a chances to read the books I already gave you. This is my heaven so you're right, I never leave. I live upstairs,” She pointed up at the ceiling, “It's so nice to come down in the middle of a night and scoop up a book whenever I feel like it.”

Gabriel could not help but smile as the quotes flowed through her like water in a stream. He hoped that some day he would be able to be so eloquent in his speech, but for now he would just smile and listen to Jessie. "There is something about your words, and the way you say them that makes me very happy, despite the dark subject matter."

He winked at her and looked beyond the shelves to the other half of the shop. He was finally beginning to dry out, and that was a small blessing. "I feel as if I have already taken so many great books from you, Miss Jessie. I don't dare take any more. Though I will leave you with this bit of information. I take great pleasure in the occult studies. Be they divination, herbs, crystals." He laughed and moved to get into a more clear area, where they could both fit.

"You have been so kind, and accommodating to me through this rainstorm and the like. I give my word that I will be back, and perhaps I will have a few new books for you to add to your collection, hmm?" He liked this girl, if nothing else she was one he could speak to on an educational level, and that was rare indeed.

Jessie just shrugged, "There will always be darkness. It's what makes the light so welcome and appreciated." One only had to turn on the news or open the paper to see that. She shook off her mental dark shadow and focused at the task at hand; the books.

The brunette snorted, "You haven't even touched the amount of books we have here but I understand. Its always better to take a few at a time that way you never run out. There are always more waiting for you. I'll have to go through our inventory to find more that you would like." The idea of digging through the countless books for Gabriel's specific selections was exhilarating. It was a challenge and one she was willing to accept.

As they moved closer towards the front Jessie's mood got lighter and lighter. She lightly ran her fingertips along the countless books, taking comfort in their feel and smell. "I always like talking books. You are more then welcome back and with luck I should have a more diverse selection for you to go through. No rain is required either." She chuckled at her little joke and smiled brightly back at Gabriel.

He had to admit, such was always the truth of things. One could not have light without the darkness to balance it. That fact alone was one the worlds truest constants.

He walked in silence alongside the young woman. He smiling at her words, and enjoying her enthusiasm for him to return again. She was an interesting girl, he admitted the fully, and that fact made him want to learn more about her and this little world that she had made for herself.

It took a special kind of person to make a world of books. A world that was so very ornate and complete. It was an obsession, and a good one at that, but it intrigued Gabriel to no end, "I will make certain to return again. also to return these to you once I have finished them. It will guarantee that I I make another stop, for, with school and the like, I can tend to be a bit busy."

He smirked, he looking to the door ans noting that the rain had all but stopped. "It would be best that I take my leave now. Run between the raindrops, as it were. Miss Jessie, I thank you for this time, and perhaps some day you will come into the coffee shop and return the favor hmm? I am certain you know the one. It is the independent cafe near DCU...locally owned..." He winked and gave her a light bow.

"Until we meet again then...and perhaps I will bring another trinket for your shelves when I return." He chuckled, backing toward the door.

Jessie just smiled, “we have a really great return, buyback, and trade policies so your welcome back any time. With luck I'll have found more books to go with those.” With the rain all but gone it seemed their little philosophical discussion needs to come to an end. It didn't take long to get everything sorted out so by the time Gabriel backed towards the door Jessie was already itching to begin the search for more books that he would be interested in.

“Enjoy. I'll try to stop in some time.” She waved and continued to smile as he finally made his way out the door, his books protected from the residual rain by the plastic bag they were in. It was nice to be able to have a mentally stimulating conversation with someone that while dealt with books, did not fully revolve around them. She really did hope he would enjoy the selections and would come back soon.
