{yes, you should consider yourself lucky, horace, that I naturally have a bent towards healing. in fact, I-}
Horace swung and nearly missed, only scraping the spike across ghostly flesh. Still, in his mind, Jannisari droned dryly on and Horace grimaced.

He swung out again, arm only catching air. It was hard to concentrate. {Doctor, I can't fight with you being so noisy!}

The silence that followed from Jannisari was distinctly haughty and an unspoken 'how dare you' hung in the air between them. Well, Horace thought acerbically, if she wanted them both to survive, he needed to focus. Just then a book came flying at his head and he ducked. It hit the wall with a heavy thud before falling to the ground, cover up.

Horace was horrified. That book was a good book! He;d brought it along to read, although he hadn't touched it yet - romances were still... they seemed so detached, now. But he focused on a type of exaggerated outrage, twisting a creature arm upand throwing them onto the hapless table. It was easier to think of books and trivial things than remmeber that he was horribly outnumbered. He could not afford to let his confidence waver.

They seemed to waver as he struck, not retaliating. Horace surged forward and struck out again.

Everytime the ghosts howled and shuddered, Horace grinned and pressed harder, ignoring the spider-webbed cracks he could feel in his shield. It was less of a concrete feeling and more of an impending doom. His shield would crack - but Jannisari could, maybe patch it over. Fear band-aids.

Horace reached out, feeling his fist go into and through soft flesh, too soft, too malleable. It was like fighting air or water. Or jell-o. Jell-o ghosts, lovely.

{again, horace, before they can strike.}

Horace obediently did as she suggested. As much as he liked that final pull and push of a shield breaking, now would not be the time. That feeling was for safe spaces, where he could smile and push someone's knife into his shield with his own hands. This, here, was survival.

{that was the last one,} she warned. They both knew the limitations of their bond, the way it cracked and strained when she tried to absorb too much fear. It was limiting, but Horace did not expect to be any greater.
{Then I guess I better make it count.} Horace pushed through the ghosts, swinging blindly. He wanted to take out as many as he could.

He couldn't do this; he couldn't win. But Horace tried not to let himself think these thoughts, instead putting everything he had into this fight even as phanton nails raked along his. He fell, heavily, and scrambled back up, wiping blood from his lip.

{their bodily humors are weak. ghosts are uninteresting from an anatomical standpoint.} Jannisari made a noise of disgust.

{horace.} Jannisari's voice was almost steely. {we should leave soon; I cannot heal your shield once more.}
{It's fine; I can go a little longer.}

And he could, although Horace felt a little woozy and more than a little battered. He could because he had to. He slashed out, catching something in the head with a solid thump. He could do this for a while longer... he felt his shield weakening. The mass of ghosts seemed to swell up like a bloated corpse, striking out at him. He reeled back, falling into the overturned bookcase as a something slammed into his eye.

A little longer. He'd made a dent in them; he could see that, but it wasn't enough - it was never enough. He wasn't strong enough or good enough and he knew it. The ghost battered into him, and he didn't noticed if they were shrinking any firther, he just kept hitting whatever he could reach. It had to be enough, right?

{horace,} she said, and he'd never heard such urgency in her voice before. {you need to go NOW.} His hsaking hand reached into his pocket. Horace could feel his the skin around his eye swelling.

He looked up, and through the ghosts he could see the sun begin to rise. His hand closed around the pendant. Faster, he thought. His lips moved soundlessly; Horace licked his lips, opened his mouth to try again and...

The ghosts vanished.

Suddenly, a kind of tired relief washed over him and Horace sagged against the overturned bookcase. He yanked himself upright and jogged to the window, peering out for any sign of the creatures. Nothing. Nothing at all.

{I believe they have gone, horace.}

Horace could hear the displeasure in her voice, the kind of sandy tightness that meant she would pick apart his actions with a fine-toothed comb. Hopefully, he thought, she'd wait just a bit. Pulling back from the window, Horace began to send a couple of texts with what he'd gleaned, including the attack and he near-failure. He thumbed the send button and sat down on the bed., phone resting on his thigh. It vibrated and almost hit the floor before Horace could catch it.

Text to Horace
alright. stay put, sending you backup - see it through, Nokoni

Horace groaned and rubbed his eye (singular, because one of them hurt like the devil). Yes, stay put in the rickety lighthouse were fear creatures had oozed up out of the floor like spoiled honey. He had almost hoped she'd say 'come home, reconnaissance is over - good job.' But hearts were inherently hopeful things, prone to believing in the scenario they liked best. They were also liars. He flopped onto his back, muscles throbbing in protest. Ignoring the fact that a bunch of ghosts had phased through his bed (did that count a ghostly sexual congress?), he tried to catch a few hours of sleep. Horace closed his eyes and sighed, too tired to even appreciate the fact that he was still alive. His phone buzzed.

Chantelle was glad to get off the island. She couldn't go on actual missions right now because..

..well she wasn't sure why not. Probably something to do with the fact she couldn't summon her weapon. Either way, she was out there and she was in a boat (she couldn't ride a boat, she was sure) and oddly concerned about the fact she was. She wasn't sure she'd been in many boats, but there was the sinking feeling that nothing good ever happened in them.

The boat itself had a lot of useful diving equipment and a Melvin.

She'd been talking his ear off the whole time about anything and everything - none of it of any consequence.

"Rescue party is here!" she called out at the pier.

6....7....8....9....10.

Melvin continued counting over and over slowly as he rubbed a temple, trying to keep himself from going insane. Chantelle was a good girl in that she talked, and typically he liked that. It meant he didn't have to say anything at all, but he also liked knowing things as he talked, but Chantelle didn't leave much room for questioning and what few things he asked, he was becoming more and more confused. He was trying to figure out who all of Chantelle's friends were, who seemed to be afflicted with many relationship problems and life drama that he wasn't sure was even possible. It seemed typical that they were all romantically involved with each other, but he had never met Jacob, and her friend Bella seemed to be a very troubled girl who would need to go to the Infirmary for any pregnancy she had. He only hoped she was already seeking medical attention.

"I still don't understand why she isn't seeing a doctor." He finished, having gotten lost in Chantelle's explaination ages ago. He wasn't really following most of what she had said to be honest. She seemed to be a popular girl nonetheless with all these people she knew. He had to wonder why she was even called in and wondered that someone so loved and connected with others might get into trouble.

It made his stomach turn.

As the boat neared the pier, Melvin inspected their gear again and then looked about for any attackers they might have to take care of before Horace showed up.

"Horace?"

Horace dragged himself up as the boat approached, surprised to see Chantelle and Melvin. Although the more he thought about it, the more it seemed to make sense. Chantelle was death - taking care of the acquisition and distribution of equipment in this case, and Melvin was here because he had already proven himself time and again diving. Or something. He waved. In the time hat had passed, Jannisari had reduced what had been a rather spectacular black eye to some more normal-looking bruises. It was a minor difference, really, but his eye wasn't swollen anymore and that was always a plus.

"Hey. What an interesting little party." With very little grace, Horace climbed into the boat between the two of them. He glanced at both of them and rolled his shoulders. "Soooo, we're going diving." Pulling the map of the wreck out of his pocket, he began to give them a detailed overview of everything that had happened, ending with the text he'd received that morning:

Text to Horace
Probly best to go to the source yeah. Don't drown!
