Charlotte shook. There was a dragon right there. It wanted to attack her. Quince stopped it. He’d stabbed it through the head, and right before her eyes it vanished. If he hadn’t been there- Well, if he hadn’t been, she wouldn’t be here either, in her defense. The sound it made when it died, it was like rolling thunder. A gurgling ooze that emanated from its throat in its final moments, and speared her to the core. She licked her lips and looked up at him. "Yeah. Yah, it… didn’ hurt me…” Just startled her was all.

She looked to the orbs. Char was familiar with these. Sometimes when dragons attacked their ship, these were left behind. Sometimes they fell into the ocean and were not reclaimed. And sometimes the men told fantastic stories about claiming them, since Char was not permitted on deck when there were dragons afoot. But this one. She reached for it, watching her the reflection her fingers made against the glassy surface. “This mine?” It should be. The brothers had scared her enough for it.

She picked it up. Maybe she had been a little scared. The threat of being zapped through with lightning could do that to a person. But it still felt… adventurous. Dangerous, as Roseryn had said, but exciting on its own. She held the orb up, pink eyes following its movements, and saw beyond it. “The others…” She noted, eyes widening. “The other dragons. Will you take them on too?”

Rose joined them just as Charlotte’s question fell from her lips. He rolled his eyes with a quiet snort. Of course they had no choice but to take on the remaining dragons! Couldn’t exactly outrun them, and hiding from such a keen sense of smell was a no-go. He surveyed the area with a critical gaze. Two dragons dead. The rest had been fighting amongst themselves, but when this new threat turned out to be more than one beast could handle, they’d quelled their internal conflict. As he’d expected, of course, Cici was more than capable of defending her. Magic be damned. “Don’t worry,” he purred out in what was easily a condescending clip. “The worst is over. ‘Taking care of yourself’ doesn’t seem like such a simple goal now, hm?”

Multiple sets of honey and golden orbs fell on the three teens. The Kiandri snarled. They snapped and sparked with their powers. Rose could say nothing for the girl’s combat abilities. To him, she seemed to be a clumsy, ill-bred peasant rat, useful for little more than fainting and falling over. Quince could stay back with her. They’d be fine together, surely.

Meanwhile, he was under no obligation to stay at Charlotte’s side. He strode forward, reaching out with the threads of his magic to hunt down the root systems he felt in the area. SInce choosing his clan, he’d taken on the task of becoming familiar with groups of plants in different environments. The desert, of course, had been a priority, as he’d expected he might have trouble when dealing with an area with little vegetation. Needless to say,it probably needn’t have been much of a concern. Plants such as cacti had thin, shallow, expansive root systems. He drew it out with a pulse of magic. Singularly, the roots were not powerful. And dragon could easily break a small tangle of cacti webbing.

But together- He would a knot of them about one of the Kiandri’s back legs. A hindrance more than anything else. But the dragon snapped, reaching back with its maw to clip away at the roots with its teeth. And when it did, Rose captured it. The thicker roots from deeper parts of the desert seeped up. They would about the dragon’s horns, through its teeth, its neck, tugging and holding it down in the bent and unusual position. It fell side-long, scrabbling immediately at its binds. Teeth gnashed, struggled to bite through the roots that forced its mouth open, claws battered wherever they could reach, swiping over sand and tearing at itself with all the strength it could muster.

‘Magestic’ wasn’t a word Rose would’ve attributed to it. It hissed obscenities in its draconic tongue, spat at him, howled out to its brothers at hand for aid. With a pulse of power, Rose tightened the ropes. The dragon’s fight became more frantic, lurching and flopping this way and that across the dunes until it was doing little more than aiding him in strangling itself. When blood seeped between the scales of its neck, the dragon gave a least heave of attempted breath, and was still.

Roseryn inhaled, extended his arms, palms upright, and plucked away at the tangles of roots and vine. They had at least served their purpose. After seeing the dragons done, he laid them back to the desert from which they’d come.

She liked that Quince didn’t make a show of the whole mess. She didn’t know him well, but he seemed genuine. He seemed worried over her safety and well being. This was the attitude she expected from ‘peace-loving’ Dovaa. They were a race of nature and magic and the elements. Souls that took the high-ground and strayed from war. They were sheltered in their little world where no other could tread. And that should’ve made them soft, patient, and weak. Particularly the children who’d lived there all their lives.

At least that’s what she thought. Quince seemed a decent enough example of these things. Roseryn did not. He was rough, violent, rash, and worst of all, smug. She’d never realized how ugly smug looked on someone that she’d never expected to wear it. She was no stranger to violence or rudeness or carelessness for other people’s wellbeing, but the attitude just… didn’t fit the bill for how she’d seen the day going.

Charlotte bit her lip. Dragons wouldn’t have been kind or merciful with her. They were the most powerful creatures in the land, beastial they may be. That didn’t mean Rose should be so tactless. “Stoppit!” She shouted as the boy toyed with one of the dragons. Stop! If yer gonna kill ‘em, kill ‘em but ain’t no reason to torture...” She trailed off as the Kiandri heaved and was still. She knew on some level, she was grateful. Grateful that the dragon had died, just not as much about the way it had been killed. And it irked her on some level that the Ysali boy had seen fit to return his weapons to their original resting place.

They would go on like nothing had happened. All that was left of the Kiandris was slashes in the sand that would be carried off soon enough by the wind. And a small pile of orbs.

’Stop’ rang in Roseryn’s ears. Against his better judgement, he’d mercifully spared the girl from a tough and likely unwinnable fight, and she had the wherewithal to tell him to ’stop’ doing anything? The creatures he’d killed had been young, stupid, reckless, and already fighting amongst themselves, anyway. Weeding out the weak and careless quickly was as much as the world could hope for. He huffed softly, and, satisfied that he’d tidied the mess as much as he needed to, turned to face her, expression pinched and remorseless.

“You wanted danger and adventure and excitement,” Rose drawled, “So I gave it to you. Gratitude seems like a more appropriate reaction, but perhaps your daft little mind simply can’t see that.” The Ysali boy turned on his heel and strode across the sand, moving off to collect the glistening treasures from where they lay. As he moved, he heard Cici’s whisperings.

“It’s alright,” the younger boy murmured. “He’s just a bit of a sourpuss on most occasions.” Quince looked her over, hands hovering just over her arms- not touching- as if he thought there might be a need to hold her still. But she seemed alright, if only a bit shaken. “Despite the tactless slaughtering, you are safe. I should like it to stay that way. How about we head back toward the town? I can escort you to your father’s side and-”

“No,” Rose clipped as he headed back toward them, holding a small cache of orbs. He offered one to Char, toxin green orbs dark against the shadow from the first rays of morning sun. “We can return when I hear a ‘thank you, Roseryn, for saving me.’”

“Rose,” Cici hissed warningly.

That much, she should be capable of.”

Charlotte gulped. She looked down. Her fingers moved up to come idely at the lowest strands of her hair. She found herself leaning just barely toward the younger of the two brothers. In her mind, she knew she needn’t be afraid or worried or concerned. She even thought maybe she should be grateful. She was alive and unhurt, after all. But something about Roseryn made her uneasy. His tone, his words, his eyes; cold like ice. And he could hardly be more than a few years more than her in age! What made him like that? What made him so… off?

Especially when there was something so much more warm and welcoming about his brother. “Y-yah,” Charlotte agreed at the mentioning of the town. “But I think I’ll head back to me ship alone. I just don’t wanna get you all mixed up wit me daddy and all.”

Then there was Rose again, standing in front of her and offering her their won treasures, with his scary eyes and mussed red curls. And she would not be missing him. She should thank him, Char convinced herself as her fingers reached out. That would be the ‘polite’ thing to do, it seemed. The back of her mind naggingly reminded her that she didn’t want to do anything such a ‘sourpuss’ would want from her.

With a grumble, she clasped her palm around the offered orb. “Thank you, Roseryn,” she muttered, head tilted down and gaze locked on the tip of his boot. “Fer savin’ me…” That was it, the deed was done.

She plucked the Kiandri orb from his hand and tore it towards her. Char dipped her head once, quickly before looking back up at them. “I gotta go. Me daddy’s waiting on me by now, I bet. It was nice meetin’ ya, Quince, but I’ll be okay from here. Dun follow me!” With that she turned and fled, wings popping from their tattoos as she hastily climbed across the dunes in a rapid and half-assed desperation to get away from them with no more arguments.
