Generally, Mai is a calm, elegant, stoic and shy individual. Often lecturing and playful with her comrades who she would have no problem putting in place. However, when her schizophrenia kicks in, she becomes a completely different person; at first, she appears calm and composed, and smiles as if amused when taunting or talking to enemies. But the moment she raises her sword, she becomes lost in her own mind, confusing fantasy with reality. Precisely on the night she had witnessed her clan's end, sending her into a killing rampage and will stop at nothing until she has cut down her target. History: It had been a misty night, the sky darker than usual. Illuminated by the full moon which seemed to bring a sense of comfort to the small village of Kusagakure. Especially to six year old Mai who had taken a routine trip to the village outskirts to collect special sap sacred to her clan, the Konans which was vital to their origami culture. Knowing her way around the rich forests, there was no need to fear anything or anyone. But, for some odd reason, on this particular night, young Mai felt uneasy and had regretted not bringing her twin brother along.
Itching to get home as quickly as possible, Mai had collected what sap she could from the weeping tree and began to walk along the white path that directly led to her home. Taking deep breaths, she began to sing to herself in efforts to remain unphased by the building dread in her chest. But it only increased when she heard footsteps trailing not too far behind, and loud ones at that. Not bothering to look back, she took off in a sprint, the weight of her sac dragging her down but she was determined not to drop even one spec of the precious sap. It was precious to her family and for that reason she would not let go. Noble, but also foolish, it is because of the sac weighing her down which would result in her pursuers to catch her in their web and trap her as their prey. Taking the girl's prized sap and much more; what seemed like hours was quick to end as she had been left for dead. Beaten, bruised, and bleeding in places she couldn't imagine, Mai had awoken from her nightmare to see orbs of light and smoke in the distance.
The village. Weakly, she ran as fast as her small legs allowed, despite the stinging pain coursing through her six year old body. Her sight clouded by dirt and tears, Mai forced herself to keep going until she made it home. The smell of burning flesh and wood filled the air; dirt and houses painted of blood. Smoke covered nearly every inch of the forest. Mother. Father. Brother. Mai cried out in search of her family members, hoping they had not been affected by the wrath of the mystery men. Sadly as she looked deeper into the Konan mansion, the familiar faces were spotted across the garden.. pale as death and soaked in a pool of blood. Too distraught from the sight, all Mai could do was encase herself in a cocoon of paper and wait for the flames of hell to take her. Trembling in the confined and black cocoon while she awaited her fiery death. Waited, waited. But, death didn't come. Only sleep. When she awoke after what seemed like an eternity, she found herself in what she thought was heaven. This is what Maianami Konan has had to go through in order to get to where she has today. A genin of Konohagakure and talented one at that. Though orphaned and haunted by her tragic past, she utilizes the teachings of her late mentor, a notable medical-nin, into her training. Determined to reach her full potential in efforts to one day find the culprit responsible for attacking her and her village and make them pay with blood.
