It was a long difficult walk through the forest on foot, he was certainly no experienced woodsman, but what he lacked in ability he made up for in sheer determined stubbornness, walking onwards even when it really didn't look like he'd get anywhere fast.

Inside the labyrinth it was as dark and winding as always, but this time he remembered the way more clearly and had learned many of the things that he shouldn't cross or attempt to climb. It still nevetheless took quite some time, and he was relieved to sit down and rest when he found an abandoned camp from some previous traveller which contained some perfectly serviceable food.

Walking into the storage room was familiar, and there was frankly nothing to stop him as he made his way over and retrieved a very fancy looking pair of Moonstone pauldrons.
"These will do." he said to no one and turned to head back down the mountain.

Xala was pretty determined to see something interesting.

But she wasn't sure if she was...feeling up for it, exactly. Yet.

At least, not until she saw something skittering in the underbrush. "Oh," she said, wiggling, "Ohhhh."
After a bit of a scuffle, she knelt in the road going through rope after rope of squirrel intestine, marveling at how it had all been coiled in there, and picking through each differently-colored bit and piece. And that's...exactly how Lawr would find her.

Lawr made his way along to where Xala was with the same sort of calm indifference he seemed to always wear, he wasn't sure what Xala was up to, but that only made it more interesting.
"Are you supposed to do that to squirrels?" he asked, pausing to look over her shoulder. "It seems it might impair their function a little."

"Not impair, exactly, I wouldn't say it that way, would you? It's just...well it's a better function, don't you think?" she said, stuffing the intestines, tiny liver, heart, and lungs into her pockets. She brushed her hands off on the front of her leggings.

"I don't think it is a better function in every respect, taking out the parts halts the motion of the organic machinations. It might well have become a moveable meat but it has ceased to be in the capacity within which it was originally set out to function. It has stopped being a squirrel and become merely the composite terms of its parts."
He paused for a moment, following her with his usual doggedness. "Did you de-construct it? Why?"

Xala blushed. "They're...hidden, aren't they? Proper society doesn't really...talk about or show off those parts, but they're, I mean, once you get to them, you can't- it can only happen once, usually. More than once if you're really lucky. Most people don't get to see their own. But you can see other people's." Her expression shone. "Or creatures. Do you think anyone's seen what's in the other ones. The ones doing all the attacking? I bet it's...something really special."
The conversation, unfortunately, heated up faster than either of them had expected, and they had to make a break for it.

"Certainly they are hidden but they functionally must be, they aren't anchored in the same way to bones but with slippery membranes all wrapped up, stowed away working in the dark. And you can certainly see them more than once, I have encountered quite a few I think. It feels familiar. But anyone can take them out, make them stop working, but not just anyone can re-assemble the machine and reanimate it. And if you could, would it still be the same machine?" He walked in thought a ways. "I admit I would like to see the internal workings of our assailants. What a thrill it would be if where we are twisty, wet and slimy they were cold, hard and organised."
He ran, but did not seem particularly upset that they were being chased, his mind far away from the immediacy of the danger and wandering in a world where creatures were strange and perfectly amended.

When they got up there, this time there was someone already on top. He looked a little old to have gotten up here all the way by himself. He was also handing out bread.
Xala thanked him, and added it to the stores.
"No, no, I mean, see your own more than once."
While she was there she picked up a piece of aprony-looking fabric.
