It was a good thing the clasp on his sack was so secure.

No traps this time, or snakes or flaming giants or what ever. Just a nice supply cache full of even more food. Hopefully this would make up for all the food he'd wasted on previous quests.

Somehow, by some glorious work of the alignment of the planets and the galaxy turning in just the correct way, with all the angels and archangels singing praise and the sun radiating its warmth down upon him, Dirge made it up the mountain free of incident.

Opening the chest on the mountain top revealed a gauntlet inlaid with tiger stripes of gold. It was very fancy and Dirge wanted to wear it right now, but waited until he got back to Camelot like a good child.

Dirge was beginning to wonder just why these Artifacts existed in the first place, and who was making all of them? Did these shadowy things somehow know how to shape metal and glass, and inset gemstones and patterns? That was a very odd thing for such a violent, abysmal species of horrors to know. Why would they have that knowledge in the first place? Where would they have gone to find it? Had, perhaps, the Riders, those humans who decided to simply give in and join the Horsemen for the promise of power (and hopefully not death) brought along some of their previous knowledge? Was there some sort of smithy who worked for the Horsemen? Why would they crank out so many pieces of armor, each obviously crafted with dedication to detail, only to have the pieces strewn about the world? It made no sense...

Yet here Dirge was, ready to take up the reins of a horse and go hunting for another one of the artifacts. The Greater Leggings of Leo, the guild master told him when he had given the orange haired boy the map, were protective pants with armor and padding that would keep him from getting infections and most severe leg wounds, unless the opponent came from behind and tried to slice at his thighs. Dirge had replied with a cocky grin and the assurance that he wouldn't let them even get close to that point. Heroes of legend didn't fall prey to such petty maneuvers.

The truth was, though, Dirge was beginning to doubt that he would ever become a folk hero even, let alone a champion of Camelot with a statue erected of him in the courtyard holding a crown drenched in the black ichor of the Horsemen's king in one hand and his sacred weapon in the other. No, the only monument likely to appear in reverence to Dirge, and to the rest of the knights in the Kingdom, were crude tombstones that would quickly be trampled over by the horde of half formed shadow creatures that plagued his mind space.

The ever present darkness was a very depressing environment to try and be valiant in, let alone optimistic. For every shadow and raging set of scissor sharp teeth that Dirge cut down, two more were waiting in its place. This was the worst possible Hydra scenario Dirge could think of. He'd punch a real Hydra any day, he didn't give a ********. This horde of shadows, though? The lack of confidence was evident in every step he took, every forlorn look to the torn sky, flinching at the breathing darkness that overlapped their horizon.

As he mounted the pony, Dirge went back into the room of his mind where he searched for his memories, again. Still there was only the Knight's Code, and a swirling pool of dark, dripping blood suspended in a ball in the center of the room. He couldn't remember anything past that, just pledging himself to the Great King and then this siege.

If only the Great King were present, Dirge thought. Maybe then he would be recognized, maybe his spear would glint in just the right way as he twirled it above his head and through the shadowy, inky organs of the amassed darkness. He could prove himself to the King, if he were there.

A thought crossed his mind, and it made the fire in Dirge's eyes glow white, teeth biting lips into the same. Had the King retreated? Abandoned his Kingdom at the first sight of trouble? Surely, it couldn't be true - the man could not be that much of a coward.

Running from massive spiders was just part of paying his hero's dues, right?

Dirge was pretty sure that, in most of the heroic tales, Eagles were HELPFUL creatures that didn't attack everything they sighted.

The leggings were what he'd expected, shiny and glittering, greaves fit for a warrior. The stars were a pretty neat touch, too.

gaia_crown NEW QUEST 5/12/15 gaia_crown

With all the nonsense that was going on back in Camelot, all the infighting and the siege, the complete breakdown of leadership and any sense of unity, Dirge relished going on another quest. He could tell there was absolutely no possible way of making it out a hero, a noble champion, in that twisted maw of politics and loyalties - no way to rise above that swirling cesspool of mystery and mania from where he stands; the lowly ocean floor of apprenticeship. He has to keep collecting more of these artifacts, to win the Great King and Merlin's favor, and most of all to be recognized. All superb Knights had gear that the others recognized him or her by; be it their armor, steed, sword, or shield. Fame followed recognition, and power followed fame.

Since coming to Camelot, Dirge's power had increased quite a bit. He was able to wield a weapon with efficiency now, his muscles had become thicker, fuller - his tunic sleeves were now full and did not drag or hang off his shoulders as they used to. Knotted chords of muscle comprise his biceps and forearms, and they have grown accustomed to lifting heavy objects. He no longer fatigues after a few minutes of hard work, and can carry his own weight in any physical task.

This is not enough, though. He needs more power, if he wants to rise above the tar of normalcy, overcome the yoke of the common man, the litany of monotonous problems or life stories. He did not care for the farms, for the tales of how well one's crop is doing or who's wife said this or that about another farmer's daughter. Those things are silly, irrelevant at the end of the day and they bore him so much. Tales of slaying the beasts that lurk, defending a kingdom, those are what he prefers to listen to.

He prefers best the stories of knights who undo their enemies at every turn, the knights who were once shamed by the villain but overcame and triumphed. Dirge does not know why these stories entice him most, yet he always feels drawn to them - he wants to be a knight like those knights. The ultimate form of justice is revenge, but that all comes back to one word: power. The Great King said these artifacts were full of it, and if he completed a full set?

Then, following all basic logic and maybe a slightly dreamlike sense of want, he too would become powerful.

Three artifacts down, three to go. He was going to have this armor if it killed him, which it wouldn't. If it killed him, he'd never be recognized - and he couldn't possibly allow that to happen.

The steed was mounted and food was packed into his familiar leather sack. Dirge set a hard gaze at the bleak and shadowed horizon, the screams and sounds of battle playing behind him. The siege continued, the fighting and the death will continue, and will not end soon enough.

He rides, knowing he will come back to find it all unchanged.

Dirge really could not really catch a break, could he? He was very tired of the spiders making him lose his lunch in the most literal sense possible.
