The caverns were stupidly dangerous, and the tall man always ended up with some sort of scratch or bruise from trekking into this part of the cave. Today it was a snake bite, because apparently snakes lived a long time in trap cages.
At least it wasn't a venomous snake.

The mountain top offered not only the mantle he'd been sent to find, but a very strange old man in some funny clothes holing a basket of food, a very odd smile on his face. He claimed to be a wizard, the good kind - bad wizards were to be called warlocks, after all. He handed the food over to Alexei, the apprentice giving his thanks.
When he'd turned around from putting the food in his sack, the man was gone.

Alexei examined the mantle, giving a rapturous chuckle at the designs. Sweet peas! How adorable! He was ecstatic to have found such a charming piece of armor, and was glad to have something more suitable to protect his chest.

How? Was the question on Alexei's mind. How on earth had they breached their gates and taken the entire castle by storm in such a short amount of time? After all they'd done to fortify the walls and prepare for a battle - had the sacrifice of his memories been for naught? Surely, Alexei thought, their collective memories had to be worth something more than a feeling of hopelessness, a collection of bodies and more counting.
Where was the Great King? Alexei had not seen him since the initiation, and that worried him. Should a King not rally to his people in a time of need; does a King not bring courage to his kingdom? They needed that little bit of inspiration, that small morsel of hope to get them through the onslaught of shadow.
These quests were the only thing keeping Alexei in a proper frame of mind: keep moving forward. If he continued to bring back the artifacts, he would earn his spot in the fold of the knights and be able to save more of those falling. He could save at a moment's notice, intervene like some divine bolt of light and clear the battlefield.
Well, maybe not that far. He was no god, or even a legend - just a man. A man who wanted nothing more than keep this ship together.
Alexei mounted his steed once more, a firm fire in his eyes. This must be done.

Dire wolves were certainly some of the most frightening creatures Alexei had seen in his life. Hulking masses of bristled fur, mottled shades of grey and black, piercing blue, green, and yellow eyes. Sinew pumped and knotted under the fur, flexed and ready to hunt down the first unfortunate animal that came within their sights and met the requirements for prey.
Yet, what terrified Alexei more than their frightening stature was the serene grace with which they yielded such timbering bodies. Angelic, or at least much like a aged and wise captain on the sea, eyeing an oncoming storm with a hard eye and the calmness of a saint.
The wolves did not attack Alexei so much as they washed over him, and he was the fresh, green eared captain who flailed and panicked at the storm. He didn't know why they saw him as prey, perhaps they didn't. Truly, the apprentice may have been encroaching on their territory.
All the same, he came out of the lupine sea with a few cuts on his face.

Alexei had long stopped the bleeding of the wounds, and prayed to whatever uncaring deity out there that he would not be scarred from the attack. What would lady Abbi say if she saw him all banged up and scarred? Would she panic and fret over him? That wouldn't do, not with all the other injured knights in the wards, not with inflow of the dead and the seriously injured. She had to focus on those, as did he.
The boon of food in the middle of the road was met with a very skeptical gaze. A trap by the shadows? They obviously had to see all the outpouring apprentices from the castle, they had to know that they were out to gather the artifacts they'd made and hid across the land. Surely it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to assume these shadows had at least enough intelligence to figure out that those from Camelot needed food.
But it could be used to help those in the great hall, or bolster the strength of the men and women on the offense. So many uses for this food...
But if it were poisoned?
Alexei took a very long, very drawn out breath before dismounting Burgie and taking an apple from the crate. He took a bite, waited for a bit, then chewed.
Five minutes passed, and he hadn't died. The food was good.

Alexei nearly got destroyed by that avalanche, yes somehow managed to dodge by the sliding snow and rock.
