The child didn't seem to notice that he didn't say anything affectionate back. Either she didn't care or had missed it completely. However, when he got her attention by saying they were in luck she turned her head to look at what he was referring to. When she saw the jewelry hanging from the vendor's stall she gave a small squeal and bounced up and down excitedly. "Yay! I can get Azure a gift!" Thrilled at the idea she quickly grabbed Istanell's hand and pulled at it to drag him along behind her as she tried to run all the way over to the jewelry.

His eyes darted up and down as she hopped on the spot, obviously excited that they'd found jewelry so quickly. He hoped they wouldn't need to visit more than just this visitor, that this Azure's gift would be found here. He humored the girl by being dragged along.
When they got to the stall they had somethings up high and some low enough for Kalli to see. Istanell took his free hand to run a finger along the strings of shells and smooth glass, trying to think about what this absolute stranger might want from this little girl.
Istanell personally liked a lot of the sea glass pieces, simple but pretty. He picked one with a fantastically ethereal and just seemed like it glowed, even in the bright daylight. There was another on a simple black thread, less magical to Istanell but also interesting. The glass had been shaped down into an oval shape, and it felt manly to him. He wasn't really sure though, as he really had no idea about jewelry except that people liked it. There was another ethereal looking piece of glass, red in color and more expensive than the others for reasons Istanell couldn't fathom. There was something with blues and greens and Istanell wouldn't be sure how to describe it outloud... he grabbed it anyways. Last he picked something stripy, holding them all in one hand before wondering if it even mattered... he still didn't know anything about Azure. For all Istanell knew... they could be of like minds and the mysterious Matorian wouldn't want jewelry are all.
"What about any of these, Kalli?" Istanell's gaze was already drawn to some of the bracelets on a lower viewing level. They seemed to be made from wood and threads and interesting twists in the thin rope. Now these... these he might wear. He took the hand she was holding away and tapped at the display. "Or any of these?"

She stopped at the vendor's stall and stared wide eyed at everything. Kalliope seemed a bit overwhelmed with it all. So many pretty things on display and hanging around. As Istanell started to pick things that looked good she waited. Her red eyes taking it all in. The sea glass is what caught her eye the most. When he brought them down for her to look at she grinned even more. It took her a moment to look them over and decide which one was best to get. She settled on the ethereal blue since it reminded her of the blue streak in Azure's hair. "This one!" She exclaimed.

Istanell smiled slightly, nodding as he placed the others she hadn't picked back, carefully. He glanced around around and nodded to the vendor. "How much?" He lifted the neckless a little before realizing something. He turned to Kalli, eyebrows raising. "Do you have money, Kalli?" He, for one, never had money to carry around when he was so young... unless it was explicitly to go buy something and come right back.

Before Istanell could ask her if she had money she was already holding out a few silver pieces. Kalli gave a grin to him and nodded her head. She had come prepared to buy something for Azure. "Here you go." She was eyeing the necklace with joy, trying her best to picture her friend in it. "Do you really think he'll like it?" Or more importantly that he'd wear it. Kalliope was wondering if he would even accept it. After all, sometimes boys didn't wear jewelry.

Istanell smiled and took her money, exchanging it with the shop keeper then handing the neckless to Kalli. He scratched the back of his neck, considering her words. "Hmm." How was he supposed to answer that? He didn't know anything about Azure, so how could he tell? "Well... if my friend gave me something like this I would be very happy, even though I don't wear these sorts of things. But... it's easy to find different places for this sort of object... wrapping it on a staff... hanging it somewhere you see often, that sort of thing."
Well... well now the task was complete, wasn't it? He stood there awkwardly though, wondering what to do now.

"You... you wouldn't wear it if I got it for you?" Kalli could only stare up at him for a moment before her eyes started to water. What if Azure felt the same way? Giving a frown she'd hold the necklace close to her and stared down at the ground. At least he hadn't said he'd throw it out. Maybe Azure would still keep it? Wouldn't that be enough for her? "Thank you for helping, Nell." Kalliope had shortened his name without thinking. Lifting one hand she'd rub at her eyes then look around. "Uh.. which way leads to Oba..?" Since she wasn't sure if Azure would like her gift she didn't want to go searching for him just yet. Instead she wanted to go home.

Istanell's eyes went wide, because obviously he'd said the wrong thing. He frowned slightly and crouched down to her level, just as she was rubbing at her eyes. "Well, the reason I can't wear things like this is because of all of these." He touched lightly to his chest and then his arm and the top of his hand, just a few places where his body was littered with scars. "The jewelry doesn't feel nice against my scarred skin." At least that was part of the reason, so it was good enough.
Then an idea hit and he reached back and touched his hair briefly. "I would probably use the necklace in my hair though. I don't know if your friend has scars or not, but I am sure he will wear your gift proudly." Of course, these were blind words because he didn't want to see the little girl upset.
Nell. Nelly... he missed his brothers. He frowned slightly and gestured down the street. "I believe this way leads to the Oban boarders.. but I've never been, myself." He did need to go, of course. "Don't you have someone with you, to take you?" His frown deepened, wondering how the adults could be so irresponsible to let the little girl this far from their sights. He figured something probably happened between this age and adulthood that turned an Oban absolutely mad.

She stared at his skin when he knelt down to her level. Kalliope had seen the scars before but she didn't know they hurt. Being bold she got closer to him and reached out to trace her fingers over some of the ones on his chest. For a child she kept her touch light. Her eyes followed her fingers for a time and she looked up at Istanell. "Who hurt you?" The question came out before she could even really think about it. "I'm sorry you were hurt." And then she did something even more innocent without thinking. Kalli leaned forward and planted a kiss right on one of the scars that adorned his chest. With that she'd look up at him and then turn to stare at the direction he told her the border was. Kalliope blinked, gave a smile to Istanell, then started to walk away. She didn't want him to try to find her parents, that would get her in trouble.

Istanell stayed still while she felt a few of the raised bumps of flesh. Most were long and narrow, though here and there he had some shorter, thicker scars. He remembered one of the first time a cut had healed into a scar, rather than back to his normal flesh. He and Illian had been climbing trees, both too young to get as high as many of the grown shifters, both more sure that they could go higher than the other. The fall honestly hadn't been that bad, but it'd been terrifying as he crashed through branches that snagged sharply along his arms and hands. He just thanked Serin he hadn't fallen all the way to the ground on that day. At her question though his eyes dropped down to his chest, to the freshest set of scars. His muscles tensed at the less fond memory of the Oban people attacking his village and for a moment he was torn whether he should state this or not to the little girl. She'd been just a baby, he thought, when that time had happened.
"Well some I got from being reckless. Doing things without thinking, or maybe to try and prove I was braver than my brothers." That was the truth of it, really. "Others from learning the proper way to use my blade." His hand tapped the hilt of his sheathed sword, recalling the days he'd grow angry during training and was less prone to using his weapon correctly. His father's hard words flickered into his head. He'd gotten what he deserved! In a way it was true. "And a few I got from some bad earthlings who wanted to take my village from me and my friends and family." The last information was offered up softly, kept vague.
As she told him she was sorry he'd been hurt he nodded, unsure of how to reply. Some earthlings were lucky to go through life without their skin even getting on scar. Others, like himself, would have many throughout their life time. He cleared his throat a little when she planted a kiss on one of his scars, looking slightly awkward. It's what children did though… just like their mothers. I can kiss it better sort of thing. When she looked up at him he just smiled slightly.
His eyebrows raised when she turned and started to walk away without answering him and he stood, scratching at his temple. He debated whether he should accompany the little girl or not… his hands gripping the bag of food tighter. He still needed some things before going into the Oba lands… like nourishment and rest.
