"No!" The word was quickly spoken, heated, apologetic. "I am just. I am not so good at women. Or men. Sometimes I think too much, and maybe read too much into things." Isaac stared down at her hand on his arm. "I am the one who should be apologizing. When you took my hand, I thought that maybe it was probably just a friendly sort of hand-holding, you know? But then I start thinking, what if it wasn't, and what if I am expected to do a thing? And then I start thinking no, I am sure it was just hand-holding that friends do. But what if it wasn't."

If he'd been hoping to make things not-awkward, he felt like he'd failed, miserably.

"On the roof, that was nice. Wasn't it? You are not crossing any lines, it is just that I am used to... having understandings. I am not good at reading signs. But I am very good at reading into things that probably are not even there?"

He paused and drew his free hand down his face.

"I am not very good at this. I do not even know what I am trying to say. We are having a good time, and I do not want to ruin it."

Isaac promptly shoved two pieces of fruit into his mouth.

She sank back to sit on her feet, watching him try to explain it all to her. He was shy, she'd read that right, but there was more too it then that. Her thumb brushed across his arm, a comforting little gesture that went with the soft smile resting on her lips.

The roof had been nice, very nice. Gretchen couldn't remember a time when she'd felt safer than wrapped up in his arms. It didn't matter that they were laying on blanket covered concrete, or that there were no ceiling or walls to protect them. On the heels of what had been a nightmare, he'd made her feel safe again.

Impulsively, she reached down to pick one of the little yellow flowers that were growing around them, and rising up again she'd tuck it behind his ear, brushing a length of hair back over his shoulder. "It was a friendly," she assured him, meeting dark eyes, before leaning in to lay a soft kiss on his cheek. "But maybe it's not just that."

Tall, strong, handsome, sweeter than spun sugar on a sunny day. He was a good o' boy in all the best ways.

Palm against his cheek, she slid the tips of her fingers through his beard. "But if that's not what you want," she began, features earnest. "You can tell me, and I'll back off." She could smell strawberries on his breath. "I won't be mad, 'n it doesn't have to change anything. We'll still be friends." Because whatever else, they had started as friends, and she didn't want to lose that.

Isaac wanted to try and explain the reasons behind the things he'd said; doing so thus far had only made a mess of things. He had always had a tendency to do that - things that were simple, he made complex, most especially when faced with relationships. He was a romantic at heart, and Isaac knew he had a way of going all Truly Madly Deeply on people he didn't really know. He wanted to tell Gretchen that he'd never really been in a really real relationship; he wanted to tell her that there had been enjoyment to be found in the company of tourists, of clientele who had come to his hometown in order to do a little fishing, a little drinking, and a little ********. He wanted to admit to her that he'd fallen a little bit in love with each and every one of them, and he'd always felt a little lonely when they left despite the fact that he'd known none of them would be around forever.

He didn't say any of it, though, and merely smiled at her because she was so pretty in the sunshine, and she smelled like strawberries and pineapples and she'd been so very nice to him - and if she wanted more, he would give her more because deep, deep down he yearned to please everyone he came into contact with in whatever way they wanted. Isaac would always give all of himself to anyone who required it, and he never worried that one day there may be nothing left of himself to give - or to keep.

"There is no rush," Isaac began, "unless you want to rush. It will always, always be friends first - and whatever you want, whenever you want, Gretchen." His voice was utterly soft, and he lifted his hand to rub a few strands of her pretty dark hair between his fingers. "When you no longer want something more, that is fine, too."

And then he was pulling away to cram a few more strawberries into his mouth before lying back on the ground, where he promptly touched gentle fingers to the flower she'd tucked behind his ear. He chuckled softly and propped his head up on a folded arm before letting out a content sigh.

There's no need to rush, he said. Unless you want to rush.

He as placing it all in her hands, and she couldn't help but blink up at him, lips half parted as he toyed with a length of dark hair. It wasn't quite the response she'd been expecting, but knowing him as she did(which wasn't much, but they had time, didn't they?) it didn't seem all that surprising. He was selfless, so helpful and so very nice. So afraid of reading too much or too little into things. This just made sense.

Her fingers slipped away from his cheek as he fell back to lay against the ground, and for a moment she sat there, looking down at him as he sighed, a peculiar, thoughtful little smile on her face. When she did move the fruit came with her. Crawling on hand and knee until she was sitting beside his shoulder.

Without a word she plucked up a pineapple from the bowl, offering it down to him. "So then," she began, hooking a bit of hair with her free hand to free it from his beard. "If I wanted to lean down and kiss you, that would be alright?"

Another flower found it's way into his hair.

Isaac was silent, eyes closed. He did not see her move so much as he sensed it - and when the sweet tang of pineapple hit his nose, he immediately opened his mouth. After taking it from Gretchen, Isaac chewed slowly, methodically. He did not mind the flowers that were decorating his hair - if anything, he enjoyed it because Gretchen seemed to enjoy putting them there.

He remained silent after he swallowed the fruit. A smile toyed with the corners of his lips, a twitching that turned into a full-blown grin as he whispered, "No, Gretchen, that would be horrible."

At that, he peered up at her with one eye.

"But I will suffer it, because you have all of the fruit."

He closed his eye and very dramatically puckered his lips.

If he kept letting her decorate his hair there was every chance of him finding flowers or other pretty little things tucked away in chestnut waves at odd times. A third had found a place nestled beside the first, her attention there until he grinned up at her, whispering.

To this she gasped, feigning shock. Unaware that he'd even been capable of sarcasm. When one dark eye peeked open she pursed her lips at him, making a face before he was puckering up dramatically.

"That's right, I do have the fruit." Her voice was closer, a little odd, and carried the sweet scent of a strawberry a second before the cool edge of the berry touched his lips, then her own after he'd taken fruit from her.

She was leaning over him, a hand planted on the ground beside his head, the other moving to trail the tips of delicate fingers along the hair at the edge of his jaw before drifting back towards the nap of his neck.

This was nice, Isaac thought idly as Gretchen kissed him. She was soft, and pretty, and sweet - really, there wasn't more that he wanted. Lying there in the grass with the sun on his skin, the ocean crashing far beneath him and a pretty girl who wanted to kiss him, well, Isaac couldn't think of anything better. It made it easy to forget the infected, the mall -- it made it easy to forget everything.

He did not deepen the kiss, and he did not touch her aside from the light brush of his fingers against her cheek. He did, however, break the kiss after a moment's time.

"This is a good day," he whispered, tugging her down onto his chest. "Don't you think?"

As kisses went it was chaste. The soft press of full lips and the brush of fingers at the nape of his neck before he broke the kiss to whisper up at her, pulling her down against his chest. She went easily, laughing as she rested there against him, one hand resting against his shoulder.

"A very good day," she agreed, grinning. One of the best she'd had since waking up on Deus ex Machina. Here she could forget missions. Here she could forget desks, and paper work, and training. And if she tried hard, she could even forget the disapproving rumble at the back of her mind. It was so warm, so peaceful and beautiful.

For just a little while, they could pretend there was nothing but the cliff, the waves below, the fruit, and wonderful company.

Humming something soft, Gretchen reached for a strawberry, holding it for him. "So how do you say 'strawberry' in Norwegian?"

"Jordbær," Isaac responded before using his teeth to take the proffered strawberry. He shifted beneath her a little, grunting softly as he attempted to make them both comfortable.

"And solsikke is sunflower." He paused to lean up in order to press his lips to hers again, "That is kysse. This," Isaac pointed to the flowers that peppered his hair, "is blomst." He beamed up at her.

"And you are veldig pen - very pretty."

Isaac grinned broadly, deep brown eyes bright with restrained laughter.

"It is probably not the most beautiful language, I think. But it is mine, you know? It is comfortable for me, but difficult for others to learn, probably."

She shifted with him, tucking her knees up against his side as he nipped the berry from her fingers. A flick of her tongue against the tip of her finger stole a hint of that sweet taste before he was leaning up to catch her lips. It brought a soft hum as her eyes closed, a giggle leaking before he was drawing away again to draw her attention to the flowers she'd tucked into his hair.

An all too pleased grin appeared at the compliment, and the brush of lips against his chin, then his cheek, before she'd lean back enough to shake her head. "I like it." It was certainly unique. You heard French, or Spanish, or German all over in the media. Asian dialects were predominant in movies. She couldn't speak a lick of it, but she'd heard them all plenty before. His native tongue was all knew to her.

"So these," she venture, touching a petal on one of his flowers. "Are blumst?" She tried to mimic the way he'd said it, but the word did not fall naturally from her lips the way it had from his. With a chuckle she tried again, still couldn't quite match the phonics, but it was at least closer this time.

Her nose wrinkled up as she smiled, laughing at herself before giving a content sigh and laying back against him. "Never learned another language. They taught Spanish in middle school, but I was never any good at it. Kinda wish I'd picked up more of it, or taken something else in high school." Without moving she reached for the bowl, groping around in the grass before finding it and pulling it closer so she could help herself to a pineapple chunk. "Foreign languages always sound a little funny with a southern drawl though."

"Mmm," Isaac nodded, not even bothering to correct the way she butchered the word. All he could do was grin, and then grin some more.

"I know of a few phrases in different languages," he went on, "I learned them to make my job easier back home. I can say a few words in German, Italian and also in French. These words all have to do with fishing, so they are nothing special."

Isaac let out a content sigh before his eyes slipped closed again.

"Do you think the stars look any better from here?"

"Important at the time, I'd imagine," she mused, voice a soft thing as she watched the light breeze playing through the tall grass and the thin branches of a singular tree not too far from where they were laying. Her fingers were playing in a long length of his hair, twisting it slowly around her fingers so the silky strands slipped along her skin.

A little shifting, and she was laying with her head pillowed on his chest and knees curling up towards his shoulder so his arm could drape across her hips if he wanted.

She rolled her eyes up to glance at his face at his question, lips ticking up at the corners as she caught his meaning. Or at least thought she had. "Only one way to find out." Another night beneath the stars didn't sound like a bad idea at all.

"I'll bet they do, though."

"I want a bonfire here," Isaac did, indeed, drape his arms over her hips - it was comfortable, and felt natural to do so. "And one on the beach sometime, too. But here, a private one. You and me and the stars, I think it would be very nice. Do you like marshmallows, Gretchen? I have a fondness for them."

His eyes remained closed, and he half-dozed.

"I want a crab boil on the beach," he continued a little dreamily, half-smiling.

"That can be arranged." Very easily, she would imagine. No stranger to camping, Gretchen knew her way around building a safe fire, and no doubt Isaac did as well. Between the two of them she was sure they could manage. "Toasted marshmallows, mmm." Eyes closed as she recalled the taste. "Anyone that doesn't have a fondness for them is right crazy." A beat, then she'd tip her head up, looking at him. "You ever have a smore?" As an America she took for granted that everyone had, but he wasn't from America.

A crab broil sounded amazing as well. Kansas was landlocked, so fresh fish or shellfish had always been pretty expensive, but when they went on trips to Virginia they'd always stuffed themselves silly with seafood.

"Bet we could arrange that." Slender fingers slipped from his hair to wander in a lazy graze along his jawline and chin, enjoying the feel of his beard tickling along her knuckles. "Don't think we have crabs here, but we could get some. Wouldn't be so bad if folks pitched in and we got'em from somewhere they're plentiful.

"I have, yes," Isaac chuckled as he peered down at Gretchen. "Many times. They are my favorite, s'mores."

He was silent as she pressed her fingers along his jawline; if he'd been a dog, he'd have been kicking his leg. It felt like a remarkably long time since he'd been this close to someone, someone who didn't want anything more from him than his company.

"I know that we could," he whispered quietly, a slight smile tilting his lips. "I have the perfect place on the beach, and I have even started to dig a fire pit. The first chance I have I am taking leave and I am going grocery shopping."
