The song was easy enough to play in staccato strokes and a series of double stops to give some indication of a harmony. Usually he played the vocals as the melody, but changing it up to a more backseat role rendered the song more interesting. Pizzicato started off the drum line well enough, with a few time thumps to the wood for a healthy bass.

"Don't worry about them hearing us. They can hear us fine from here, as long as you project over the violin." He wished he brought a mute for tricks like this, but considering how often he teamed up with other people... Why would he bother?

He whistled loudly nonetheless, and the sharp noise caught the attention of a few of the patrons. They looked but hadn't moved yet. Slate wagered it would take some time of going through the song before they recognized the tune - and more time yet for them to evaluate the quality of their play. He hoped for good tips from this; more money was always welcome, and a large sum meant the pair would take home decent earnings from street play.

Just tell me you don't suck, Ash. It's all I care about right now. Sounds like you can stay on tune but if you don't sing to a popular style, these people are gonna jet.

"Not a problem," Ashton murmured as he got ready to sing. The whistle had caught his attention as well and he just snorted a bit as he started dancing to the violin.

"I stay out too late~ Got nothing in my brain! That's what people say, Mhm, that's what people say~" The voice he sang in was clear and over the violin. Sure at first the violin made it sound a bit country, but the clear way Ashton sang made it pop through and through. The whole time he sang, the tiny one moved around, dancing, bouncing, ultimately trying to get the crowd from the coffee shop to wander over and dance with him.

He had good energy, he could stay on tune, and he didn't change the lyrics, not even gendered pronouns. Why would he? It was just a song. The smile he had on his face could be described as infections, honestly.

Yep, this one's a performer. The mischievous urge to compete asked him to switch over to a more melodic route and play in a more forte manner. While his companion's antics drew further attention, he remained in a more background role. He waited until the outdoor customers and a few stragglers came along before he moved to stand at Ashton's side.

A wink was spared to the audience before he stepped up his performance as well; playing violin restricted movement somewhat and he couldn't keep up with the dancing and charades provided by the singer/front man. However, his playing transitioned seamlessly into a solo role that left him competing with the man's voice. It netted a rise out of the crowd, and the competition alone spurred enough good spirit to procure tips. Occasionally he slowed his playing to a lull to allow for greater effect during interims, but each chorus showcased another opportunity to play loudly alongside the singer.

Sometimes Slate strayed far enough to bump the other man slightly - playfully, he figured. Whether Ashton worked with this or not remained to be seen.

As was customary for playing a song he knew well, the performance felt lengthy. He wasn't tired nearing the end of it, but after a time the song sapped his interest. The crowd still sounded delighted. Once others in the surrounding area recognized the well-unfolded tune, they joined in forming a small circle about the pair. Some nodded along while others tapped their feet silently. He couldn't deny the peppiness that came of the light, crisp melody.

But the song wound toward its close now, and Slate strove to make the last of the performance count.

The bit of friendly competition with the violinist made Ashton grin and actually made him laugh during the parts he didn't have to sing. The bumping was playful enough that he didn't actually get offended. He act like he did with an exaggerated roll of his eyes and waving him off before stepping in front of him, clapping his hands together and resumed his roll dancing. The shorter man would look back at the other, give him a flash of a grin and a wink afterward to try to make absolutely sure that Slate knew he was fine with the joking about, the playfulness that this performance had.

When he said he was a singer, he didn't lie. The boy could hold a note. Granted he needed a bit more vocal coaching for the longer, higher notes, but he didn't really have too many here to take away from the quality. No one seemed to notice, either way. That was the good thing. Though Ashton thought he was just distracting them with his dancing. Which.... was kind of the point.

Either way, the song was winding down, but the energy was there. At least for him. He looked over at Slate's face and noticed that he wasn't quite as into it as when they started, but that was probably normal for the kid. Either way, once the song finally ended, he took a deep breath and then a bow, putting his hands folded in front of him.

"Thank you, thank you! Give it to the man with the violin, Slate!" As he clapped for Slate, the people in the crowd did too, making him grin even more.

The pair concluded the song, and Ashton's generosity in calling him out for the crowd prompted the redhead to poke the singer in the side with his bow. A few prayful jabs, mostly to gauge if the man was ticklish. Afterward he walked backward a couple paces as he offered a shrug.

"I was having trouble keeping up with you for a bit there, Ashton." A sly glance toward the crowd confirmed that they were interested in hearing more. He asked himself if he wanted to continue; busking a duet didn't yield as much money, and as he looked at his case-turned-coffer it confirmed as much, but there was a certain kinship in playing with the man. It wasn't as much about the money anymore.

In moments like these, only music mattered.

"Aright, if anyone wants to name a song, I'm sure we can halfass our way through it. Who wants to test us?" The option given to the crowd soon returned with a profusion of suggestions, each every bit as colorful as the last. Relief came when he knew most of the songs. It only left the question of if Ashton knew, and a glance toward his companion confirmed it when the knowledge of the song wrote plainly across his face. Slate smiled.

He leaned in a little closer to his partner to obscure his phrasing from the crowd. "I'd say we're pretty compatible. Maybe we should take our play elsewhere when we're finished here." The offer was veiled, but made. For now, he turned back to the crowd to resume with another favorite. He started the baseline himself as he did before, and the crowd offered their interest in a few fits of cheers.

It'll be a good night, no matter the end.
