Kara shuddered in her father’s embrace and clung to him. When he finally spoke, the words made her freeze and her heart lodge itself in her throat. He wanted to meet him? She bit her lip, chewing on it and hesitating. She wouldn’t let herself build up hope if there was a chance it could be broken right back down. When she pulled back to look up at him she blinked and rubbed at her eyes and cheeks. “You...want to meet him? You won’t kill him…?”

Detraeus blinked, and then frowned, eyeing his daughter carefully after she pulled back and studying her shift of expressions. “I did not say that…I must meet with him, yes. I should have, properly, much sooner, but now…” He shook his head. “I must see him. This…boy who thinks himself a man worthy of you.”

Kara sagged at his words, eyes clenching shut as her heart shattered again. Of course he hadn’t meant that. She should have known better. Part of her wanted to write to Rinn, tell him to run and never look back or come for her. He would have been better off never having met her, at this point. Another part of her, however, wanted him there. Wanted him to meet her father and prove to him that Nesrinn was nothing like what her father thought. She let her forehead fall back against her father’s chest and she sighed and nodded. “Yes, you need to meet him. Just…” Her words trailed off and she knew they would be useless. He would not promise something he never intended to keep.
“Who will go after him? Can...” She shook her head, already knowing the answer before she even finished the question out loud. “Of course I can’t. What are you? Stupid, Kara...that’s what you are,” she muttered to herself as she pulled the rest of the way away from her father and pushed to a stand. She tightened the furs around her and glanced back towards the house. “Can we go in now…?”

“I would.”
Detraeus rose with his daughter, reaching automatically now to help settle the furs over her shoulders and then — with only a touch more hesitation — to brush feather-light over her cheek and edge away the dampness there.
“Or your mother, if you truly wish that he brought here, or…” A thought occurred to Detraeus, and he eyed Akara, thoughtful. “Your brother…if you prefer it. He comes and goes enough as he pleases as it is…” Despite all his best efforts to contain and protect both of his children, Detraeus was no fool. At nineteen years, Ataya made many visits down the mountains or out deeper into them on a whim, and for all Detraeus’ attempts, the boy was now virtually as beyond his own control as the shadows that the child wielded with his magic. “I am sure you could direct your brother enough for him to find him…and you are not foolish.”
‘Only reckless…and childish.’
Detraeus tucked a hand lightly behind Akara’s back, ready to hold her steady as they moved forward towards the front door again. “All these things…will work themselves to an end for the better. You will see.”
‘I will see to it.’

At her father’s first words, Kara opened her mouth to protest but snapped it shut when his fingers brushed over her cheeks. She couldn’t hold back the instinctive lean into his touch as she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She let it out when he made mention of her mother and then her brother. When her eyes opened back up, she spoke as well. “Ataya. I can ask him to go after him.” With that decided, she let herself be lead back into the house, intent on seeking her brother out and asking him for the favor.
