His harsh words made her frown. Kalli hadn't expected him to full out agree with her on that fact and then tell her she would fail or had failed at being a lady. The youngling wanted to tear up. Instead she took a deep breath and huffed at him before she moved to get up from his lap. Once she was on her feet she'd look at him then kick him on the side of his butt. "You don't even know me!" She raised her voice only a little bit. "I didn't meant to get lost out here, I was trying to find out what was bothering my mama's pets. " Feeling she had to justify her actions she felt water building in her eyes.

"I can walk back by myself." With that she'd straighten her little shoulders and turn to walk away from him. Kalliope was fully intent on leaving. The boy was so mean to her that she wasn't sure if he was going to help or not. Plus he seemed to want to insult her or tell her she was just another child.

"Ow," Jelanii said as he was kicked by the girl. It hadn't hurt much, but it had surprised him. He listened to her words, barely, but he was more focused on the way her eyes waters. Dread filled him. She wasn't going to cry, was she? But to his surprise, she managed to hold back her tears and instead set her little shoulder and tell him she would back home by himself.

Despite the situation, Jelanii couldn't help smiling at the little girl's determination. It was sort of admirable. He tucked one hand under his chin and quirked an eyebrow. "So you're going to walk back by yourself. Well that's good, but I'm curious. Where exactly are you going?"

He shrugged. "You were the one saying you were lost before. Are you suddenly not lost?"

She paused and looked around. Oh right. She had forgotten that she had no idea where she was or which way was home. Still, she turned her head to give a watery eyed glare at him. "I will figure it out. You mean butt." Kalli stomped her foot and balled her hands into fists before she took off walking in the direction that they had come from. She figured if she could find where that over grown turtle was then she could back track from there. Right? Saying that she could find those weird animal tracks again. If not then she would find someone that was nicer to help her. "Big meanie picking on little girls!" She mumbled to herself. The red headed child huffed and puffed as she trampled through the jungle like terrain.

Of course her cute anger came at a price. She tripped over something on the ground, she wasn't sure if it was a rock or her own two feet, but it took her down. Kalliope put her hands out to save herself but she still managed to scrape her knee. "Ow.." Now those tears in her eyes gain more body and threatened to spill over.

Jelanii Watched the girl march off with mixed feelings One part amused, one part admiration at just how determined she was. That was until she tripped and feel. Then he was up on his feet. He started to rush to her aid and then caught himself. Instead he walked to her side and held out his hands. "Come on. This mean butt will help you find your family."

He glanced at her nknee and a touch of concern slid in his eyes. "Are you all right?" Sure, he officially hated Obans, all of them, but he suppose he rather not have Kalli get hurt...it didn't mean anything of course. It was just that he didn't want to be held responsible. Right, that was it.

Even in his head the excuse was weak, but he mentally told himself to shut up. "So what exactly was your plan on how to get back home," he asked, genuinely curious.

And her tears won the fight. Steaming over her cheeks and making her pout look all the more adorable she'd look up at the boy, who she still didn't know the name of. "Why are you mean to me? Why don't you like me? What did I do?" Her agitation was at herself for falling, but she'd gladly whine to the stranger if it helped. "Is it because I'm little? I'll grow. I promise." Sitting on the ground she'd pull her knee up to her chest and stare at the broken skin. It wasn't bleeding. Not really. It was just dirty and looked raw. "Is it because I'm Oban?" Her voice broke slightly.

"Mama always told me that other people would be mean to me because of what I am. I didn't think it was true. I thought it was a story to keep me from talking to strangers.." With the back of her hand Kalli would wipe at the tears that lingered in her eyes. She looked very much like a little girl that had just lost her puppy. Instead she was now realizing that those stories were true. The youngling brought her other knee up to her chest and wrapped her arms around both legs. Sniffing to keep her nose from running, Kalliope shrugged.

"I was going to try to find where you grabbed me and then look for the tracks I followed. If they are still there." Might as well tell him. He'd want to be rid of her quickly. If he could take her back to that point then she could do the rest on her own. Though she really was a bit ways away from her home town.

It was on the tip of Jelanii's tongue to explain to the girl that she was an Oban and so that was basically a guarantee that she would grow up to be a horrible person. Right there, his tongue forming the words, because if she was going to learn that the world was harsh and unforgiving, then it might as well be from the race the Oban had enslaved, but instead what slipped out was something completely different.

"I'm sorry," he said and the words shocked him. What was event worst was that he meant them. Whether she was destined to grow up to be another enemy or not, seeing her there crying and knowing he was responsibly didn't make him feel right.

Very carefully, he crouched down and hugged the girl, patting her back awkwardly. "Don't cry. You're stronger than that. I can tell." He pulled away, leaning back. "You got chased by a giant beast that wanted to eat you and you were still brave. Don't let me being an as-uh-jerk take that away."

Did he just say sorry? It shocked Kalli as well. With another sniffle she'd look at him as he bent down to once again be at her level. Well, lower this time since she was on the ground. The little red head was going to say something but he hugged her and that alone was enough to silence her. The patting that he gave to her back was a bit different but she didn't complain. "I wasn't chased, you were. You were nice enough to save me but now..." Kalliope frowned. She almost thought he was regretting saving her.

"What's an as-uh-jerk?" The way he said it almost fluidly confused her. Her tears were drying up, though some did linger but they were associated with the pain her knee was feeling. "And I don't want to be strong. I want to be graceful like a dancer." That she managed to ruin when she fell. Maybe this boy was right and she was a failure a being a lady. Kalli moved her dark red eyes to stare at the ground. "Can't be a dancer if I fall all the time."

"You want to be a dancer?" He tucked his hand under his chin and gave her a thoughtful look. He tilted his head. "Dancers are both graceful and strong, so you can be both. And you only fell once since we met, so you're doing great. After all you have to practice."

"But..." He said and gave her a small smile. "Why don't you show me your dancing?" Though he was curious, it was mostly just an attempt to cheer the little girl up. She wasn't crying anymore at least, but he sort of wanted her to go back to...normal.

He mentally winced at that. Somehow Kalli had become normal to him and he wasn't sure if he liked that. But he supposed he didn't have much choice in the matter anymore. Somehow, she had dug her way in and settled.

The little girl noticed that he put his hand under his chin again. It must be something he did when he was thinking, or trying to think. She had to wonder if it helped. "Why do they have to be strong?" In her mind being strong meant being a fighter. Or at least being muscled like her father and eldest brother. She didn't think muscles would look good on a dancer.

When he asked her to show him her dancing she blinked at him. "You really wanna see?" While Kalliope had posed it as a question she didn't wait for an answer. Instead she got to her feet, favoring the one knee a little, and took a step back from the boy so that she had room to move without bumping into him. Once she was sure that she had enough space she offered him a smile, eyes still glistening with tears, then began a child's clumsy interpretation of a ballet twirl. Kalli couldn't get up onto the very tips of her toes but she was trying her best. Every move she made held a young one's innocence to it but also left room for improvement. Something that suggested when she got older her dance would be mesmerizing.

He watched Kalli hurried to get to her feet, nursing the one knee that was scrapped up, but it didn't stop her. Immediately, she started dancing. Kids really did bounce back fast. He couldn't help smiling as she twirled. She was clumsy, but she was dedicated and not too bad. She might actually be a real dancer one day. She was cute enough for it too. He was sure she would grow up into a really beautiful woman.

He tried not to think too hard about that. If he did then he would have to think about how she was an Oban and he had just managed to cheer her up. He didn't want to bring her down again by lashing out.

Jelanii clapped his hands. "Good job. I can already tell you're going to be a great dancer." He gave her a half-smile. "And strength is important for a dancer, especially in their legs. It helps them stand on their toes, do spins, and leaps. Strong legs and the better a dancer can move. I'm sure there are other things, but I'm not a dancer so you'll have to ask one."

When he clapped Kalliope stopped her twirls and smiled at him. He was back to being nice and she liked that. Glad to have him this way the red headed youngling offered up a giggle before she went over to hug him again. It was her small way of showing affection. "When I get big I'll dance for you." Kalli nodded her head. It was somewhat of a promise. "Maybe I can even travel with you so people can see me dance." The child was making plans for what to do in the future. "Wouldn't that be fun?"

Again, Jelanii stiffened when the girl hugged him, but this time he relaxed fairly quickly. It wasn't so bad, he supposed. He listened to her excitedly make plans and his smile dropped just a fraction, before he recovered. No matter how sweet and adorable she was, they would never been anything, but on opposite sides. That was a fact that would never change.

He gently pulled away from the girl. "Why don't we focused on getting you home first? You actually had a very good idea." He looked around him and nodded. "I can get us back to the spot we were at before, though not exactly. We don't want the snapptrotter coming back after us again."

She didn't see his smile fall since she was too busy hugging him. However, when he pulled away from her she had to blink. Why did he keep doing that? Did he not like hugs? No, Kalli thought, everyone liked hugs. "Mhm." She agreed with him. Getting home would be a good first thing to get done. "You're the best friend ever!" Kalliope was excited that he was going to help her.

She took a step back and waited for him to stand upright. Once he did that she would reach out to take his hand in her own. A cute gesture. Unless he wanted to carry her all the way back. "You never gave me your name. I don't want to be a bad friend and not know your name. What is it?" Her deep eyes were turned up to look at him, almost pleading as she waited for him to answer her.

Best friend...

This girl was really too much for him. He shook his head and decided that no response would probably be the best response in this case. Instead he stood up and was immediately greeted with a hand tucked in his own as if it was natural for an Oban and a water earthling to be walking hand-in-hand. Briefly he wondered if such a thing was possible, if one day he might meet Kalli and she would be still as kind and open as this girl.

He hurriedly dismissed that thought. That sort of thinking was dangerous. It would make him weak and he couldn't afford to be weak. So instead he walked with the girl back towards where he had found her. "My name. Well it's meanie butt of course."

Walking with him she had to grin up at him. Kalliope was showing great trust and liking for him. "No it's not, silly." She giggled and brought her free hand up to her face. "I just called you that ah-cause I was mad. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings." Without even meaning to she was being that adorably cute little girl that often times won her arguments with her siblings. Kalli kept the boy's hand in her own as they walked and even though she still favored her scraped knee she managed to keep pace with him.

"I know! I'll call you Azure." She nodded her head. Still giving him her sweet smile she spoke again. "You are my Azure and I'm your Kalli! Best friends! And when I grow up I can dance for my friend." She had named him due to the blue streak she'd seen in his hair. It had caught her attention and seemed so pretty.
