Ataya frowned at the ‘off’ tint to his sister’s tone, and some of the grit to his own words sanded away, his posture and expression softening. He supposed, in retrospect, that now was not the time for sarcasm. “Akara, I…did not…mean that,” he said, “…with as much sourness as it came out to sound.” He mounted with her, bringing Rannah up beside his sister’s hastar. “I…apologize. For whatever that is worth. I am relieved you are well…”

Kara let a bit of the tension ease out of her as her brother rode up beside her. “It is...alright…” She couldn’t stay mad at her brother for long and at the moment she just didn’t have the energy to do so anyway. She clipped the reins of her hastar, starting off through town and out into the desert. When the quiet of the desert, and Kara’s own racing thoughts, became too much,, she turned to her brother. “So...you and Edmun, hm?”

“Mm…hm?” Ataya blinked. “Edmun. Oh, yes, he…is. Us?” It took Ataya a moment to process. “We have been…interacting, I suppose. We kissed, some time ago. After I learned you had spent the night with someone before me I attempted to convince him that we ought to, but that did not go precisely as planned…why?”

Kara looked away, staring out into the desert as she spoke. “I was just...surprised is all. You never said anything.”

Ataya hummed. “I don’t suppose there was much to say, other than what I have. It is not as though it will last…he is pureblood, mm? I anticipate that things will change…but it does not hurt to gather experience.”

Kara supposed Ataya was right. Things changed and, in the end, she didn’t see him ending up with a pureblood anyway. After that brief exchange, she quietened and retreated into her own thoughts. She had hoped to see Lithian at his shop, to leave word with him for Rinn. Perhaps she could find a way to leave a note once they arrived back at the house. She had to let Nesrinn know, somehow, that she was fine but needed to return home for a little while. Her hand moved protectively over her stomach as they started along the beach and back to their uncle’s. “I’m sorry we’re being dragged back home, Ataya.”

Ataya shook his head. “We were set to return soon regardless. What does a day or two matter one way or the other? For now, I am pleased that he has not hurt you…”
‘But I worry for when you tell him of the child’s father, and its genetic makeup…’
Ataya traveled back with his sister in relative silence after that point, and the matter of packing was a quick thing. They had intended to be leaving back to the mountains for the winter soon, and it was not as though they brought a great deal to begin with on their trips to the desert proper. The travel up into the Terra Expanse was quiet, Detraeus stiff with purpose and lost in his own thoughts as he rode beside his mate and Ataya and Akara lingering close behind but far nearer to each other than either parent. Whatever had passed between his father and his sister, Ataya did not know exactly, but the tension there was potent enough to feel in the air, and it remained well until they arrived at their destination.
Winter came early, that year.
