"Yes, it is very lovely there. I think I will grow to miss it very much, but eventually I will go back - though, not to the small town I was from. Perhaps a different small town."

Her question opened the floodgates; Isaac liked a great many many things.

"I like cats, very much. I had one before this place. She was Swiffle, and she was a beautiful cat. Very soft with the most charming meow I have ever heard. I also like woodcarving, but it is a work in progress as I am not very good at it. I practice as much as I can, though I did not think to bring my tools with me when I came here. I like fishing very much, and I am also very good at it. I enjoy the outdoors, and chocolate, and peanut butter sandwiches. And jerky, all sorts."

His foot continued kicking, and he moved to rest his hands at the back of his head - once he was situated, Isaac continued.

"I like beachcombing very much, and I think someday I would very much like to try gardening. It is sad that there are no cats here, isn't it? And did you know there are no birds? No bees? It is very sad to me when I think about it."

Drawing the length of one braided tail over her shoulder, Gretchen removed the band that held it secure, unraveling the plait slowly as she listened intently to Isaac as he listed off the things he liked. There were a great many. It was kind of adorable.

"I like cats too," she offered when he had finished. "We had one, my family, before I left. Her name was Penny. She used to sleep on my pillow." It had taken couple of weeks for Gretchen to get used to not having that warm, purring weight next to her head when she went to sleep at night. "I do know, about there not being any animals here. It was a shock," and not a very good one. "I hear there are minipets though? I haven't seen'em yet. Someone told me there are even ones that looked like cats."

One braid freed, she combed her fingers through he waves before moving onto the next. "I also like chocolate, and peanut butter sandwiches." She chuckled. "I have no idea how to wood carve, so that's pretty impressive, but I do know how to fish." Her head bobbed in a sage nod. "Can bait my own hook'n everything."

Dark hair curled around a thin finger. "Never been beach combing. I love flowers. Used to have a little garden back home. Sunflowers are my favorite."

Isaac was silent as he listened to Gretchen. It was good that she liked cats, because cats were very good. In fact, everything that Gretchen liked seemed to be very good things to like. He watched her unbraid her hair as she spoke. Once she had finished talking, he piped up again.

"We will fish together some time! I have two rods, they are very good but built mostly for deep sea fishing - one day I will own a fly fishing rod, I think, because it is something I very much would like to try."

He shifted on the bed.

"Beach combing is also very fun. Would you like to build a garden with me? I think that would be very nice to do. Flowers, and even strawberries maybe."

Her hands stilled as she looked down at him. "I would really like that." Elastics were looped around her wrist, and though one hand dropped to her lap the other drifted over to brush a bit of his hair off his brow with a delicate touch. "I know how to fly fish, I could teach you if you like? My dad used to take me, and we'd tie our own flies." Here she'd grin proudly, chuckling softly.

"I'd love to build a garden, so long as there's sunflowers." There had to be sunflowers. Had to. "And fresh fruit, that'd be great." She'd never gotten into gardening herself, her mom had been the green thumb in their family, but the yard had always been lush and green and full of flowers. Absolutely gorgeous.

She pressed her lips together, rolling them thoughtfully before glancing at the thin band of color that circled her left thigh. "Do you have any tattoos?"

"Yes, fresh fruit that we will never dry," Isaac whispered softly, closing his eyes so that he could almost imagine the sight of their little garden of friendship. "I would like for you to teach me how to flyfish," he continued, humming softly.

"No, I do not. Perhaps someday, I do not know. I would only do something meaningful, I think."

He finally opened his eyes and glanced over at her tattoo.

"What does it mean? Your tattoo?"

"When I can manage to get a rod and some flies I'd be happy to. Maybe we could go to a river somewhere. It could be your first trip to the US. If that's alright with you, I mean." She didn't want to impose if he had plans already for a visit to the states. If he was free though, and willing, she'd be happy to take a fishing trip. It'd be fun.

With a fond little hum she traced the tip of a nail over the 'W' on her leg. "That's the way to do it, I think. I wouldn't want something permanent if it didn't mean anything."

She moved her leg so he could see it easier. The yellow and red bands, circled the whole of her upper calf, but they were thin, dainty things. "It's for Wonder Woman. She's sort of my hero, specially after the accident."

Isaac studied the tattoo in silence, brow furrowed in concentration.

"I would get a cat," he began, then paused with a hum. "Or perhaps not. What if, in a year, I no longer like cats?"

He rubbed his jaw idly, fingers rasping through his beard. No, maybe he would get a fish, instead. Or a flower.

Isaac let out a troubled sigh.

"It would take some deep thinking if I decided to get one. Yours is very nice, by the way. Did it hurt?"

"That's why it's not a choice to be taken lightly," she'd muse, grinning at him as she let her leg fall back to the bed. "This one is significant, I doubt I'll ever regret it." It went beyond fandom. A reminder of what she'd been through and what she'd overcome.

When he sighed she gave him a comforting pat on the shoulder. "I think the best ideas are the ones that just come to us." She hadn't had to think to hard about her's. It had just made sense, felt right."

She blinked at him, at his question, and an amused little smile graced soft lips before she gave a shake of her head, hands lifting to tuck wavy hair back behind her ears. "No, not really." Not compared to losing the actual leg or the recovery after.

"Yes," he sighed again, though he tossed her a mischievous grin. "I very much like your tattoo and your reasons for it. I am in no rush to have a tattoo put on my body. It is sometimes fun to think about what I would get, I suppose, but to be honest I would probably never get anything."

Isaac shrugged.

"Mostly because I could never decide on my own. I am very terrible about making my own choices. I have always been bad at that."

He was quiet for a moment.

"Sometimes I think about cutting my hair or shaving my beard."

"Nothing wrong with not getting a tattoo. If i'm bein' honest I wouldna got one if I hadn't gone through what I did." The idea had just never appealed to her before, and after? It was like a badge of courage.

Mention of hair cutting brought on a horrified face form the Death trainee. "Noooo, not the hair." He had such beautiful hair! Long, and full, and healthy. He could have been in hair care commercials.

Maybe he was born with it.

The horror melted away into giggles and a smile, and she hooked a thick curl, drawing it up to weave over her fingers. "I think you look very handsome with your hair and beard as they are now, but that's just my opinion."

Her response evoked rich laughter from Isaac, and he moved to sit up on the edge of the bed before turning to glance over at her with a broad smile.

"I do not think I could ever cut my hair," he admitted, dark eyes glinting with mirth. "Or shave my face. I have forgotten what I look like without all of my hair."

His face turned very serious, but his voice remained thick with barely-restrained laughter.

"What if my face is very lumpy under my beard? Perhaps it is best for all of us that I plan on keeping a beard. I do not want to frighten anyone, after all."

"I'm sure that'd be quite the shock, seeing your face for the first time in years." Grinning, she lifted her right foot to give his back a prod with her toe. "Wouldn't recognize yourself anymore."

There was nothing in the realm of girlness that compared to that, Gretchen felt, shy of plastic surgery, but that was a cosmetic alteration, and not anywhere near as simple as a shave.

"I think I'd place money on there being nothing wrong with the face beneath the beard, other than it having been covered so long you no longer recognize it." She chuckled, setting her foot back down on the bed. "Don't think you'd have to worry about scaring anyone." As handsome as he was? Nope, nothing he had to worry about.

At the prod to his back, Isaac grinned.

"It keeps my face warm," he joked, idly running his fingers through the thick hair that covered his jaw. "I wonder if I have tan lines on my face? Probably I do."

He'd never thought about that before, and it caused him to frown just a little.

"Maybe it would not be so scary as it would be ridiculous."

He shrugged and grinned again, moving to rise from the bed for a stretch.

"It is a strange thing to think about," he grunted, arms over his head. When he was done stretching he dropped his arms to the side again and rolled his shoulders back, scratching his shoulder before glancing back down at Gretchen.

"Beards." His dark eyes gleamed with mirth. "The most fascinating topic known to man, probably."

She was grinning in turn, on the verge of a giggle as he ran fingers through his beard, speculating tan lines and how they might effect his face. "I think a day in the sun would take care of any tan lines," she assured him, voice light and full of mirth. Unlike Gretch, Isaac looked as though he tanned easily. She burned, freckles rising to the surface when the red faded.

Her head tipped up as he stood, and honey eyes lingered on broad shoulders as he stretched. Admiring and appreciative, but subtly so. When he looked back down at her she met his gaze, lips ticking up automatically.

He had the sort of smile that was contagious.

"Not a bad topic." It' certainly kept them entertained for a stretch. "A good beard can be hard to come by. Lot of times you see'em and they're a little spare, or patchy." Thin fingers slid along her jaw as she grinned. "You've got yourself a winner."

Isaac let out a small huff of laughter as he crossed his arms over his chest, completely oblivious to the way that Gretchen had eyed his shoulders. He was completely oblivious about a lot of things, in all honesty. He shook his head, still grinning.

"I should go. I have taken up enough of your time, Gretchen. It was very nice to meet you. Thank you for the company and the music - both were very nice."
