“I can if you want?” The next push didn’t come, so Kirra kicked up her legs a little to keep herself swinging, but Briar didn’t sound very pleased, and it wasn’t fun to keep playing if he wasn’t having fun. As she reached the bottom again, she let her feet trail in the playground dust, braking. She scooched around on the swing seat to face him, and catching sight of his expression, her own face twisted into puzzled frown. “You didn’t like it?” She’d thought it was pretty good. Rhyming was pretty hard, actually. litian Loki anticipated this reaction, and offers apologies to Briar. Kirra doesn't quite understand what she's done wrong. ^_^;;

“I can if you want?”"Yes" Briar said, as he really, really, really didn't want Kirra to start up singing again.
It took a couple of moments for it to sink in that rather than a promise to stop with the singing, that what she'd actually been saying was that she could start up again at which point he added quickly "No. I mean no."
Because whilst Kirra might have been impressed with the fact that she'd managed to come up with a ditty that rhymed, Briar was rather less impressed.
He hadn't expected her to stop swinging once he stopped swinging and so her scooting round to look at him took him a little by surprise.
It also made him feel a teensy bit bad as she'd seemed to like the swinging although he wasn't going to admit to it.
Nor did it stop him from shaking his head and giving a mumbled "It's embarrassing" in answer to her question. That his cheeks were red as he spoke the words was not something he was going to admit to and something that he would totally deny if anyone asked him about it.

Kirra didn’t even have time to take her singing breath before ‘no’ quickly followed ‘yes’. She shut her mouth with no further sound. Both? But mostly no, it seemed, and that was terrible. Her frown deepened, and she looked down at the empty and cracked ice cream cone in her hands. “E-embarrassing?” she asked, small-voiced and obediently not in song. Embarrassing was forgetting which class was next and bringing your books to sport, or getting called up to write on the blackboard when you don’t know the answer. Or when your mum cleaned your face with handkerchief spit in front of your friends. How was singing even embarrassing? She was the one singing, it didn’t do anything to him. She wasn’t embarrassed to sing – but now she was wondering if she should be. And now he was going all red! Was he angry at her? “Don’t be embarrassed! I didn’t mean to!”

"Yes embarrassing" Briar said at Kirra's question, because the singing had been embarrassing.
Well okay being the subject matter of the singing had been the really embarrassing part - especially since Kirra had been singing at the top of her voice where anyone in the playground could hear - but Briar was totally not going to admit to that last, well at least not out loud.
Her going all small-voiced and sad was making him feel bad though because even though the singing was super embarrassing he hadn't meant to hurt her feelings, he really hadn't, just as he hadn't thought that she was going to stop swinging - he'd just wanted the singing to stop.
For a moment he huffed a little because seriously kids were just plain weird, but in the end he sighed "Look I didn't stop pushing just because you were singing" he moved to lean against the swing frame "Even if the singing was embarrassing - I did it because my hands were getting tired."
He hesitated for a few moments before adding "And I go to Knightside."
Maybe now he'd answered her earlier question she'd stop looking like she might be about to cry or something...
Because Briar wasn't sure what he'd do if Kirra started crying.LokisRose Awkward 12 year old is awkward

This was awful! She’d made him tired and he didn’t like her singing! It was all her fault! Kirra’s lip quivered, and she looked away from Briar, focusing her distress on her ice-cream cone. She began crunching it up like paper in her fingers and dropping the sticky-crunchy piece on the ground. Birds might like them, she thought, but it didn’t make her happy. Why didn’t Briar like her? He seemed to like her before! Was her singing really bad? She was scared to ask. “You are at my school,” she said, but with less enthusiasm than when she’d posed the question. What good was it to find a new school-friend if he didn’t really like her at all? litian Sensitive 8-year-old may still cry, oops. sweatdrop Sorry for delays again on this one.

Briar had thought that now that he'd admitted that he'd stopped pushing the swing because his hands were getting tired that Kirra would stop looking like she was going to burst into tears at any moment..
Especially since he'd also answered her earlier question about his school.
But she didn't look any happier and in fact face was doing that expression thingy which some kids did when they were just about to cry.
And whilst she wasn't doing anything to disprove his opinion about kids being weird, that didn't mean he wanted her to start crying on him, especially as she was squishing the remains of her cone between her fingers and everything.
He scuffed at the ground with his sneakers, feeling huffy and guilty and a little bad, reddish eyes staring at the ground for a long few minutes as if it was the most interesting thing in the world "I'm sorry" he said it in a small voice.

The quiet lengthened, and Kirra crushed her cone until only powdery dust coated her hands. She felt all crushed up too. He didn’t like her and everything was terrible and she didn’t have many friends and all her friends were overseas and she really thought they were friends at the party... She couldn’t help but sniff a little. She looked up sharply when Briar spoke, her own red eyes widened because his words were a complete surprise. What did he have to be sorry for? She was the one who was embarrassing, and made him tired and everything. She was the worst! But he was sorry. She peeked across at him from behind her rainbow-coloured hair, trying to work out if he was still mad or not. He sounded kind of sad, almost. “I’m sorry too,” she said, but it didn’t seem like enough. It was her fault, so she needed to fix it, but there was only one she could think of to make him happy again. “If. If I don’t sing anymore, will you be my friend still? You don’t have to push me,” she added quickly. “I can swing myself. But it was really nice you did.”

Briar looked up cautiously from his 'study' of the ground and finally looked over in Kirra's direction.
He'd heard a sound that had sounded suspiciously like a sniffle earlier, but she didn't seem to be crying... And not crying had to be good right?
Right?
He was going to take it cautiously as a good thing Briar decided at last and then found himself staring at her in startled surprise at her next question.
It was the 'still' rather than the friend comment that took him by surprise, because whilst Kirra may have considered him a friend, Briar hadn't particularly replicated the sentiment - hadn't even considered it.
He didn't really know her for one - their meetings chance coincidence... And besides she was just a kid and kind of weird at that.
But then again that wasn't anything personal because all kids were kind of weird.
He considered it seriously for a moment, all the while wishing that she'd stop looking at him all expectantly and stuff, but at last he nodded "Kay, I guess."

Kirra blew out a dramatic sigh of relief, and squeaked a soft “yay!”. Thank goodness! He didn’t really hate her for being embarrassing. But he didn’t like singing. That was okay, he didn’t have to like everything she liked to be friends. She didn’t have to sing. But she kind of liked to, kind of a lot. This was going to be hard. She would just have to try and remember to not sing when Briar was around. She shook the dust off her fingers, and rubbed the not-quite-tears out of her eyes with the heel of her hand, offering Briar a shy, only slightly shaky smile. “Okay, so no singing. What do you like to do?”

Despite telling himself that he was going to take Kirra's 'not' crying as a good, there had been a part of Briar that had still been worried that she might decide to still and burst into tears and so he had been relieved when she had given him a small smile.
Because smiles definitely meant that there wasn't going to be any crying in the foreseeable future.
He shrugged a little at her question of what he liked to do, but it wasn't like it was a big secret or a big deal.
"I like swimming on days when the pool's quiet 'cause you can pretty much get the pool to yourself, going to the waterpark's even better though" even if his parents were still refusing to let him go on his own.
A note of enthusiasm crept into his voice as he continued speaking "Reading's pretty cool too and there's a few trees here that make really good reading spots - although it's not so fun to do when it gets cold." Although in the winter there were other fun things to do.LokisRose sorry this took so long and I should hopefully have a tag for our other rp soon <3

Kirra noticed the change in Briar’s tone, and she relaxed a little, her smile brightening. He sounded happy when he talked about reading and stuff, probably the most happy since she’d met him. “I love swimming too!” she said, and the last traces of tears left her voice because they did have something in common after all! “There’s a waterpark around here? I didn’t know!” She was less excited about reading, but the fact that he did it outside was pretty cool. Like her mum and the other grown-ups doing their computer stuff outside on the park bench, over behind the ice cream truck. She would much rather climb trees than read under them, but she hadn’t really thought of bringing her books as outside, so maybe she should give it a try sometime. They probably didn’t read the same books, though, since he was definitely older than her, and probably read big grown-up books. She wasn’t up to that sort of book yet, and she still kind of liked the ones with lots of pictures best. “I like to climb trees,” she volunteered instead, deciding it was close enough.

Briar nodded enthusiastically at Kirra's waterpark question "Yes there is - I go every summer." He thought about it before adding "Well it's not super close-close" because if it was then perhaps his Mum would let him go on his own "But it's relatively close and the curly slides are awesome."
Kirra's admission of liking to climb trees took Briar by suprise and for a moment his reddish eyes looked slightly startled, but then he gave her a small smile "Oh like me" after all he had already mentioned liking to climb trees.
Well actually he had mentioned trees making good reading spots, but given that he climbed the trees before settling down to read, Briar kind of saw it as being one and the same thing.

"Curly slides?" Kirra's red eyes opened wide with delight as she imagined them. Even if it was far, it would be worth the wait to slide on a curly slide! And splash! Real Summer would be here soon, not just hot Spring, and she would definitely be begging her mum to find the water park now. "That is soooo cool!" And so was climbing trees, that was two whole things she had in common with the older boy. Three if she counted the swinging itself. Four if she counted the ice-cream! The day was getting brighter! Kirra stood up on her swing, clutching the chains as she looked around the playground at the available trees. "Awesome! So what's the super-best tree to climb here? Oh..." She trailed off as she spotted her mum waving from the edge of the park. She looked away quickly, pretending she hadn't seen. Just a little longer!

"The best trees to climb aren't in here" Briar admitted, "Although there are some pretty good ones nearby." In fact his favourite tree and the one he had actually been in prior to being lured down by the ice cream van was close enough for him to see the sandpit when he was up in in its branches.
He turned to point a tree that was close to the railings bordering the playground "That one over there's okay though."
It was at that point that he heard what sounded to be a woman's voice and whilst he ordinarily probably wouldn't have paid it that much attention, it sounded like the person was calling out Kirra's name.
He turned and spotted a woman, who whilst not close appeared to be kind of heading in their direction, before turning towards Kirra "I think that lady over there is trying to call you" he gestured in the vague direction of said woman as he spoke.

“Auugh!” Kirra groaned dramatically, tipping back her head to look again. She couldn’t pretend when Briar could hear her too. “That’s my Mum. Sorry.” She turned and waved back as her name was called again. Her mum beckoned with both hands, and then pointed at the ground in front of her. That was mum for ‘don’t make me walk over there’. It wasn’t fair. She bet Briar could stay in the playground as long as he wanted. She couldn’t wait to be bigger like him. Kirra dropped her butt down onto the swing seat, mournfully trailing her feet in the dust before reluctantly hopping off. The tree was going to have to wait. But it looked like such a good tree! And Briar knew even better ones, too! She sighed, looking from the tree back to him, and lifting her hand in farewell. “I hafta go. Could you… maybe show me the cool trees next time?” she asked, shy again but hopeful. She’d met him twice by accident, so maybe she’d see him again, on purpose in the park or at school. She hoped so!
