Rhys nodded. Shale's assessment was fair; even the hard sciences hadn't sussed out everything there was to suss in the universe, yet.
Coffee and a movie - were it with someone less oblivious to flirtation, Rhys might have called this an effective date. Maybe if he was lucky, he might steal a kiss when all was said and done anyway, without it being a formal "date" arrangement. "I have pen and paper, yes," he said, and he shifted his bag so that he could reach into it, producing a small notebook with a pen stuck down the spine. It was mostly for quick notations; anything serious was done on laptop, but it would be perfectly fine for writing down a number.
"I should have a free day this weekend or next, unless someone springs a surprise assignment," he said, offering pen and paper to Shale. "I'll look forward to seeing you again."

Shale accepted the notebook and worked the pen out of spiral spine to place on the pad. After opening, he saw the remnants of a grocery list mostly crossed out (already obtained, he figured) on the initial page. He turned the pad upside-down to accommodate his left-handed writing style, and wrote his name above the number for his cell phone. Afterward he tucked the pen back into the spiral and closed the pad to hand back to its owner.
"Try not to text; my plan doesn't cover it." Shale loathed to admit his faults with technology, and Rhys needn't know that he simply hadn't figured out the text function for the life of him. "I usually pick up in the afternoons."
The clock offered three minutes to reach classes on time. "It should be fun," he agreed reservedly. "Good luck in your classes." Afterward he started toward his own class, which demanded no more than a minute to reach the premise. Along the way he considered the elements mentioned as deliberate in film, and wondered how much of it was true. He had no reason to doubt Rhys, but having it explained in person would help to better solidify its truth in his mind.
And even if Rhys never called, their meet offered him something to meditate on during the three hours that composed studio time.Noir Songbird fin! we can set up a followup if you like!
