Maybe asking Gretchen to defend with him wasn't the best idea. She was clearly scared--hell, he was clearly scared--and not even Chance's unfettered attitude could soothe his nerves. But strangely, when the Sun started to belt out the curses, Dawson felt something solidify in his gut: the need for heroism.
Face set, he tugged his cap down, ducked under some branches, and swung his shield hard enough that an incoming limb was reduced to harmless splinters against the lion's maw. Syn purred as the weapon's runes lit up.
"I got it," he told them as he swung and knocked out another branch, for once not looking ready to flee the scene. "I got it this time. Hit these bitches!"

Composure would come with experience, and the fastest path to experience was to dive in head first. Terrifying as that could be. This was her role now, this was her life, and she was going to have to get used to it, or it wasn't going to be a very long life. More branches, swiping at her from above, and she ducked beneath them with a nervous little sound that seemed to catch in her throat. It wasn't quite a barrage, but the attacks were coming fast, and from all angles. This time, however, when a claw like branch reached for Chance the Death was ready. She swung her staff up in a wide arc to bring it down hard on the thick of it, sending twigs scattering around them. It didn't stop all of it, but it it should help, at the very least! "Do it, Chance!" Gretchen backed up until she nearly bumped into Dawson, but she kept her attention out and around them, watching and waiting for any attacks headed their way. Ace, what the hell?
{ I am not sure, Chance, calm down }
That's the problem, I am calm.
He wasn't quite sure why his attacks were as skewed as they were; most of the time, Chance was able to pull things off with relative ease, but it seemed like in this instance, it was not the case. Maybe it was because he was letting things get to him when normally he was easygoing and relaxed - things like his squabble with Claude, his distance from the other two, his concern for things he normally wouldn't be concerned about.
Annoying, he thought, as Gretchen and Dawson fought vigorously beside him, Dawson's expression surprisingly fierce.
An arrow pinged towards the creature, managing at least to scrape across something.

Okay, progress. With the mental nod from Syn, he turned to Chance and warned him with a, "One sec, son--" The lion's eyes flashed just before a plume of what looked like fire expelled from its maw, coating the Sun with a warm, extra layer over his own barrier. Dawson frowned a bit when he saw that the light was flickering, but it was better than nothing with them under pressure like this.
"You got a charge? 'Cause I'd suggest usin' it." He diverted another nasty-looking branch and grunted as it knocked him back. "He's good fer a bit!" Dawson shouted to Gretchen, and had he the free hand he would have given her a thumbs up of encouragement. "We're still good!"
Please let them sill be good.

Yes she did! Gretchen gave a sound int he affirmative as she smashed another approaching branch with the end of her staff, maneuvering her way closer to Chance now. "I've never tried this on anyone else," she admitted honestly, a little preemptively apologetic even, as she gave Devika an internal prod. How did this even work with a target other than herself? ( Focusssss on him, instead of yoursssself.) Well that made sense. The Death turned her attention on their Sun as the purple runes on the ends of her staff flared, and Chance would probably feel the cool rush of something before the chill simply faded away, ineffective. "s**t." The purple glow dimmed. "No, s**t! s**t s**t s**t!" Heartfelt curses hissed out between clenched teeth as she looked between Sun and her bo staff. "I'm sorry, it didn't work." Why was she so bad at using her charge?! ( Because you lack focussss.) Not helping! There was nothing but a venomous hiss in response. HP: 35 HEAL: Nope, not happening. They doomed. CHG: 0/3 | 1/2

He gave Gretchen a reassuring look, a small smile on his face.
"Don't worry about it," said Chance, patting her shoulder and then darting to the side to avoid the swing of a branch. "I'm sure this is just one of those times where we'll have to kind of...just go with the flow, we've all got a good rhythm here, even if we're a little off key."
He winked at Dawson, drawing the bowstring back; and this time there wasn't just one arrow in place, but three. Chance's fingers let go, and they whistled forward, splintering off into several more arrows as they spun through the air, until it as a veritable shower of them.
"Much better," said Chance with satisfaction, teeth grinding together in a slight smirk.

His extra protection for Chance faded. Gretchen's charge failed to go off. Chance's managed to hit, but it felt so hopeless. The branches kept piercing them, the man in flannel continued to smile, the invisible goat hooves continued to wind them. Dawson could be a cheerleader, but Deus had yet to beat the inner coward out of him, and the more they fought, the more he wondered if there was a point. They had pendants; he was starting to consider leading the first charge the hell out of there.
There were no encouraging words for either of them. He seemed to grow sallow in complexion, his weapon rising out of reaction rather than necessitation. Too slow, always too slow.

The reassurance only helped so much, especially as another swip of branches exploded against Dawson's shield and send twigs and splinters raining over them. They were being bombarded on all sides, it was getting harder to get a bead on their target, and things kept going wrong. She was beginning to wonder how exactly everything was going to be alright. New as she was, she also didn't immediately remember their pendants. What did help was the splintering barrage of arrows Chance unleashed against their attacker. For a second the Death was a little memorized by the glittering fall of multiple arrows before they hit and shattered. It was kind of beautiful, they looked like ice, or glass. ( Concentrate!) Devika barked viciously through ehr mind and Gretchen flinched, swinging on impulse and clipping the side of one incoming branch to knock it a little off course, but not by much. She made a noise at the back of her throat, high and vaguely keening as she watched the claw like limb collide with Chance. This was bad. This was really bad. She wasn't pulling her weight worth s**t, and it was going to get them all hurt, or worst. An apology was bubbling up to rest on her tongue, and only the tight set of her teeth kept the words from spilling out. They deserved a better third, someone with more experience, someone that had a better handle on their weapon and on their charge. HP: 35 DEF: 1 CHG: 1/3

"Mother ******** - "
A few more obscenities fell from Chance's lips as he gave up on shooting and just gripped the bow by the middle, swinging it from side to side so that the blades rushed towards the branches instead. He was losing his composure, his calm nature slipping more towards irritation now, and a frustration that they couldn't seem to get this right.
Something slashed his arm, red pooling against the fabric of his shirt, and a sense of nausea rose in him, thick and ******** ******** ******** ******** - "

A thousand apologies burned behind his lips as well. The more Chance cursed, the more anxious Dawson grew and the tighter his grip on his shield. He couldn't imagine it was helping Gretchen either, worse that this was her first mission experience--more guilt to take on, incompetency, bad form, weak. Everything just kept mounting and mounting and building and building, and he couldn't concentrate to save his life.
Or in this case, Chance's.
Dawson repeated and his voice cracked pitifully when he saw the blood on the Sun's arm.

Was that blood? Gretchen's eyes landed on the welling of dark blood on Chance's shirt sleeve, and yet again a soft, helpless sound creaked at the back of her throat. He was hurt. He was hurt and it was her fault. ( You can do better than thissss, focus.) No I can't!( Unaccssseptable. I will not be tied to a liability!) It came as a hissing snarl, and the Death flinched visibly. A momentary distraction that pulled her focus away from what she was supposed to be doing. Just a second, but it was enough for a branch for make it to their Sun before Gretchen had time to react to it. "s**t!" She swung, and twigs shattered, but the damage had been done already. The anxiety and frustration of the other two was feeding into her own. The situation seemed more and more hopeless. HP: 35 DEF: defending Chance for 1 /weeps quietly in a corner. CHG: 2/3

They were getting nowhere fast. Chance could feel his strength beginning to deplete, could feel the rush of breath in his throat becoming more strained with each blow. He disliked that Dawson and Gretchen were becoming frustrated as well; he hadn't wanted to make either of them feel inadequate, and yet here they were, all three of them, somehow hardly managing to make a dent in the creature.
The sight of the blood made him lightheaded. Chance tried not to think of it, tried to think instead of Otto forging through the cave in spite of his fears and his aversions, tried to focus on something and someone other than himself; a reminder that he could possibly make it through this, that all three of them could.
His next arrow missed entirely.

Gotta get out, gotta leave, gotta ******** felt like he was on automatic, throwing his shield without prejudice in hopes that maybe, maybe he could buy a little extra time. What was the point, though? His heart thudded in his chest, but it wasn't a war drum, it was an alarm. Danger. Danger.
"Y-Y'want one a'us t'take over, man?" he asked shakily, scrabbling for something to do beyond touching the pendant and getting the hell out of dodge.

Every fiber of Gretchen's being was screaming at her to run, to get the ******** away from here. Grab both men by the arm and take off as fast as they could away from this place. ( Coward.) Devika's hiss made her flinch. This was her job now, this was what she'd signed up for. That meant running wasn't an option anymore, right? Maybe? Her fingers itched to go for the pendant, and instead she gripped her staff all the harder, taking the rising panic and channeling it into a vicious swing that knocked away the approach of a clawed branch before it even got near their Sun. Again she'd feel the subtle brush in her head, the sensation of sliding scales that meant Devi had drank in enough fear for a charge. She'd get another shot at healing Chance. Maybe this time it'd actually work. HP: 35 DEF: Defending Chance for 6 CHG: 3/3
