Asi watched, transfixed, as Jantheil took on the last of the remaining dragons. This time was different from the time before — he was different, angrier. Asi frowned as Jana brought his weapon down onto some rocks and flinched at the sound it made as the rocks were crushed beneath it. He let out a breath when the older boy paused and he tried to move. Asi gritted his teeth at the sharp pain that came from the movement. It traveled up his leg and over the whole left side of his body, it seemed.

Asi huffed as he let himself fall back down to the ground and slump a bit. When Jana finally came over to him and spoke, Asi winced at his words. “...sorry…” When Jana’s voice paused, Asi’s brows pinched together and he looked up just in time to see him release a long breath and move over to crouch next to him. “Mmm. My side hurts too but that’s from earlier, when I was thrown of my hastar.” His gaze flit down to his leg and then back up to the cave walls. “Maybe you should climb back up and see if the storm’s over? Then you can go for help because I’m pretty sure I’m not going to be able to climb that.”

Janatheil shook his head, not even waiting a pause before doing so. “I’m not going anywhere without you.” He glanced up, towards the steep incline of the crater and the far up lip, and then back down to his company. ‘Think, think, think, Janatheil, you’re no fool — surely there’s a way to—’ He squinted, flitting his wings restlessly as he eyed the rock again. “How sturdy is your ice? Think you could make some stepping points, or a ramp or somethin’? If I’m gonna be carryin’ you…most all I need is some pushing points. My wings can do a good bit of the rest…”

His gaze jerked back to Jana, cheeks heating at his statement. It made a small part of him very pleased — and relieved — that Jana wasn’t going to leave him behind. He pushed that aside, for the moment, and focused on the task at hand. Asi chewed on his lip as he thought about what all his magic could do. It was obviously strong enough to encase a dragon in ice — his gaze flicked to the shattered dragon at the thought — but that was with something already being there. “I could...try.” His brows pinched together as he focused what little energy he had left and reached out with his magic.

The ice traveled across the floor and the moment it hit the sides of the wall it started climbing, every now and then jutting out small platforms of ice — just big enough for Jana to get a grip on or step on. When his magic finally reached the top lip of the cliff, Asi panted and released his grip on his magic. “That’s the best I can do. I’m tapped out.”

Janatheil nodded. It would have to do. Between the platforms and his wings, he at least hoped he could get the younger boy up. Somehow, he would figure it out. When he eyed Asi’wi again, he hesitated, eyes trailing over him and trying to work out how best to lift him without damaging his leg further.

“So,” he said as he leaned in, looping one arm carefully under Asi’wi’s legs and bracing another at his back before lifting. “Do I get kiss for my heroic efforts? Or does my fair lady still balk at the thought?”

Asi didn’t think it was possible but the moment Jana picked him up and spoke, asking about a kiss, his cheeks flamed hotter still. He tensed slightly, at the idea of kissing Jana. It wasn’t that kissing another guy didn’t appeal to him — he’d thought about it before Jana was even around. He had just never kissed anyone before and certainly didn’t think he wanted to kiss Jana. His gaze flicked to Jana’s lips for a second before jerking up to his eyes. “I...I’ve never...what I mean is...why would I...” He grunted and shut his mouth, not really having a yes or no answer for Jana.

Janatheil chuckled.

Without pushing it, he let the topic rest the moment, moving instead towards the rock ledge and scoping out his options. After planning his method of ‘attack,’ he drew a breath, stretched his wings, and pushed off. Nominally, his wings were now enough to carry at least his own body for short distances. Carting another person’s weight around was another story, but between the multiple breaking points wherein he could catch his weight on Asi’wi’s ice ledges and still his descent before leaping again and pushing with his wings, the push was rough — but he made it, breathless and sore in the wings by the time the two of them were solidly over the top ledge.

Shoving aside the soreness — in near all of his muscles at this point, for that matter — he moved them further in before going over towards a cavern wall and using its support to help Asi’wi down, at least onto one leg. Before pulling away, however, he lingered, face close to Asi’wi’s and the smaller boy’s back propped to the cave rock.

“Don’t worry, snow fairy…” He leaned in, touching their noses and hovering with his lips a fraction of an inch before the other’s, close enough that he could feel Asi’wi’s exhale. “Even I’m not so low as to steal the first kiss of an injured brother at arms. Maybe next time.” With a shift, he tilted his chin up, pressing a gentle kiss not to Asi’s lips, but to the tip of his nose, before pulling back and offering an arm for the other to grip as support. “We should find a place to settle, maybe nearer to our hastars…and hope there’s no more surprise company buried even deeper that wants to come out and visit.”

Asi clung to Jana as they climbed upwards and each time the orderite touched down on one of the ledges Asi had made, he held his breath. He didn’t let it out again until Jana’s feet touched the next one. When they finally landed at the top, Asi sighed, relieved that his ice had held up under the weight of both of them. He let the grip he had on the other boy loosen some and he closed his eyes as Jana went to set him down. He had to remind himself not to put weight on the other leg as it was instinct to want to stand on both.

Asi let all his weight rest against the cave wall. When Jana didn’t move away, though, he frowned and opened his eyes. He swallowed at Jana’s closeness but didn’t try to move. He told himself it was because he wouldn’t get far, if he tried, but even he knew that wasn’t the entire truth. As he leaned in, Asi’s heart sped up, slamming against his chest as he breath caught in his throat. When Jana kissed his nose Asi flushed and felt a sliver of disappointment.

He grit his teeth when Jana pulled away and tamped down his frustrations. He did not want Jana to kiss him. He didn’t even like the boy — but that was a lie and Asi knew it. When Jana reached an arm out for him he didn’t even hesitate before moving in and leaning his weight against him. “Mmm...maybe we’ll get lucky and the storm will be over.”

The storm was not over.

After pleasantly noting Asi’wi’s reaction to him, Janatheil mentally tucked the information away for later and the two made their way back towards their hastars and the front. The situation outside, however, looked as foul — or worse — than when they entered and, figuring their bets were safest holing up for the time being, Janatheil lead their mounts further in with them and coaxed them into laying before settling his back against one, side by side with Asi’wi. Though he wasn’t a healer himself, both of his parents were, and he had in the past assisted with at least some basics. Asi’wi, too, had a healer mother, and between the two of them, the concept of at least setting the leg and splinting it — while painful — was managed. Using the small trickle of innate magic and first-aid basic aedaun spellwork he knew, Janatheil provided at least a small mitigant spell for the pain.

After, they waited.

Conversation, basic at first, trickled out to silence, and as the hours dragged on, Janatheil worked to fight his growing shivering and the oppressive, building ache of fatigue settling over him.

Asi pulled his good leg up and laid his chin on it as he stared out towards the cave opening when their conversation started to die. He wondered if this was one of the storms that would last for days on end or if it’d slowly start to let up in the next few hours. When Asi felt Jana start to shiver, he hoped for the latter. As an aiskala dovaa, Asi had an advantage out in the cold — he didn’t get cold. While it was good for when he got lost out in storms, like this, it was also a bad thing because he had absolutely no clue just how cold it might be getting.

“You’re cold...” Asi frowned as he leaned forward and removed both his cloak and his tunic, revealing the fresh, nasty bruise on his left side. When he leaned back against the hastar he held out his tunic. “Here, put this on, then you can put my cloak over you as well. The more layers you have on, the better.”
PostPosted: Fri Apr 03, 2015 7:52 pm

“Nn.” Janatheil grunted. “It’s cold, and I…”

He trailed off, frowning and forgetting — for a moment — the tremor to his teeth or the dull weight of cold seeping through him. Instead, he reached out, gloved fingers hovering an inch over Asi’wi’s skin. A moment after, he huffed, breath white as he gripped the offered clothes and worked with them as best he could. Once the cloak was layered over him, though, he pursed his lips, and touched the tip of a finger to Asi’wi’s skin.

As an orderite, healing magic was innate within his energy. Of course, not all orderites could heal — lacking the knowledge to even call on their magic — and even with the knowledge, Janatheil’s casting was rudimentary at best. A pebble in comparison to the mountain of power that was an experienced mage in the field. But he understood some, and he called on it now, murmuring a simple spellword and weaving what he could out to seep into the bruised area and, at the very least, numb the pain.

“Sorry,” he muttered. “Seems I did a fairly s**t job lookin’ out for you.”

Asi let his eyes close as Jana barely made contact with his skin. He felt the tingle of healing magic — very different from his mother’s but still warm — flow through him as Jana mumbled. Asi snorted at Jana’s statement and laid his hand on top of the other boy’s. “I didn’t ask for you to look out for me.” He moved Jana’s hand back under the cloak. “It wasn’t your job to. Besides, it was my own stupid fault. If I’d just been paying attention to the dragons the first time, and listened to you in the cave, none of this would have happened.” He raised an eyebrow as he eyed Jana. “Are you alright?”
PostPosted: Fri Apr 03, 2015 8:44 pm

“Doesn’ matter,” Jana mumbled, not entirely sure by that point whether he was answering the ‘I didn’t ask you to look out for me…’ portion or the ‘Are you alright?’ portion. “Doesn’ matter, I was supposed to, and I didn’t proper and you got hurt. Yeah, you should have listened, but…still my job…’cause. It is…”

Shivering again in spite of himself, he leaned over, propping part of his weight to Asi’wi’s shoulder and shutting his eyes.

“M’gonna protect you…was supposed to protect you…you’re so small…”

Asi rolled his eyes at Jana’s words and persistence that he should have protected him. When he leaned against him, Asi froze and his cheeks flushed with heat. The older boy really did not know what personal boundaries were, it seemed. When Jana spoke up again, though, Asi relaxed and lifted his arm to wrap around Jana’s shoulder, hoping to add a little bit more warmth somehow. “You are most definitely not cut out for Aisko.” His lips thinned for a moment. “Why are you even here?” he muttered quietly.

“Nnh…” Janatheil shuddered, tucking in and frowning. “‘Cause…hunting…getting to know you and s**t…and it wasn’t my fault…” He breathed out. “They’re fault…I think, they say things and then they get excited and bad things happen, it’s so cold…” He sank, shifting to drop and lean his head instead against the thigh of Asi’s unbroken leg. “You’re really cute, you know…really cute…”

“They…?” Asi’s brows pinched together in confusion at Jana’s explanation. Did he have friends back on Serenia that got him into trouble? Did he get sent to Aisko to get him away from them? Asi’s gut sank when Jana said it was cold and he wished there was more you could do to warm the older boy up. Asi was startled when Jana shifted and moved to lay his head in his lap. “Wh-what ar…” Asi flushed and grunted, not finishing his question as Jana called him cute. “I think you’ve gone mad.”
