"Mmm." She muttered in agreement, nodding as she closed her eyes. "He's always been that way, as long as I've known him. The worst part is, it's impossible to just write him off. He's a complete a*****e, and when he opens his mouth you just want to punch his teeth in, and then you go on a mission and he saves your life like seven times over and then you definitely want to punch his teeth in." She smiled without realizing it, unknowingly appreciative of the man she so absolutely loathed. "Yeah, don't you ever listen to him when he tells you something negative. It's just his way of making himself feel better. Deep down, he like, totally hates himself." And she would know. She knew so well.

Her eyes opened, and she blinked them sleepily. "So how long have you been around, Chancey?"

He let out a little hum of thought at this.

"So, he's that type of guy," Chance said musingly, already beginning to put the pieces together. He couldn't see Maebe's smile, but he could hear the tone of her voice, the sharpness of it. "Sounds like a lot of people here on the island feel similar in terms of telling people negative things."

He idly laced his fingers together over his stomach and smiled up at the ceiling.

"Since September," he answered mildly. "It's been several months now, though sometimes it feels like longer, sometimes less. Yourself?"

"Coming up on two years. I'm an old fart." She laughed, because she was anything but - both in years, and in experience. "It's not necessarily the island that is focused on negativity. It's actually really just a byproduct of Twitter itself. Like, before I joined Deus, all my Twitter friends were like that too. I'm was already so completely over it by now. But like, if you're on a mission, and one of the assholes who said something that same day to you on Twitter, is your moon? Yeah, he's got your back. It's dumb, right? Twitter's dumb."

The internet was dumb. But it was also telling - Twitter allowed people to say whatever they wanted, regardless of physical consequence. This was less the case at Deus, but no one seemed to realize that just yet. It was all still freedom of speech and freedom to be an a**, on there.

"You get used to tuning them out after a while."

He gave a slight murmur of understanding. "I'd hardly call you an old fart," said Chance mildly, casting a glance down at what he could see of the top of her head. "More experienced and more familiar with everything here, but definitely neither old, nor fartlike, at least not from what I can see."

Chance's fingers slid over the rings on his fingers in idle gestures. "Admittedly, I wasn't really very aware of any social media before I came here," he said lightly. "I lived a very sheltered life, so it's been like a big kind of...social experiment, I suppose, being so active. A bad word, I think, but I do like to see what people say on there."

He slanted a look towards Maebe.

"Is that what you do?" he asked her curiously. "Just tune out all the s**t?"

"Aww, Chancey, are you complimenting me?" She grinned toothily up at him, reaching in and tugging at his collar childishly. "Aren't you sweet." Of course he wasn't sweet, he was simply saying she was more human than fart, but she so loved to make believe.

"To use Twitter as your first social experiment is courting disaster." She admitted, her predatory smile never wavering. "You'll see the real side of people once you get to work with them. That will be a real social experiment." His eyes met hers when he finally asked her if she took her own advice, and her teeth disappeared behind pursed lips. "I should. But even I'm susceptible to them once in a while." She looked away, focusing on opening the bag of Doritos instead. "But I've got a thick skin. I manage. Some people aren't so lucky." She held the open bag out to him. "Chip?"

A smirk touched his lips. "I don't flatter," said Chance mildly. "I just say what I believe most of the time, though I've sense learned to sometimes keep that to myself. However, in this case, I think being honest is only going to help me, so therefore, the compliments."

He gave a little nod of understanding, idly twisting one thumb over the other. "Twitter is illuminating in some respects, but since I'm more used to face to face contact, it's there where I find things to be the most interesting in terms of the true natures of people."

Including himself, but he didn't say it, Chance merely reaching out to pluck a chip from the offered bag.

"Managing is an interesting word choice," he said thoughtfully. "I think for me, rather than having a thick skin, I'm more like a duck. Everything just kind of...rolls off of me."

A pause, and Chance laughed.

"Or, at least, I try to let it."
