Matt said nothing as Abbi mentioned the shadows, he had grown up with them as well but he didn’t think or even connect them in his own mind to haunted houses. Seeing them in the hospital was always normal, despite its care people tended to die no matter what the circumstance, people were in fear, some were hateful and in turn took it out on those around them. It was easy to see them there; it worried him more when they were not.

Instead of saying anything he let the subject of it drop as he grinned at her peeking from behind her menu. “I most certainly was not the coolest kid, not to say I was entirely lame but I wasn’t really one of the popular kids nor was a part of the outcast. It was more I had my own group and we didn’t really worry about the rest. As for sleeping on benches it’s usually a mistake of just falling asleep while reading and I usually only use the hammock outside. Sort of a treat on a night when you can really see the skies, that’s really the best time to go.”

He grinned as he listened to Abbi about her summer vacation trips, places he had never seen it sounded like it was sort of fun despite him feeling a little hesitant in asking. His mind tried to make sure he didn’t forget things like her step-mom name as Natalie and her aunt and uncle’s cabin in Vermont all little things Matt wanted to remember about her at least enough that he didn’t seem uncaring. When she returned the question he laid back in his chair thinking. “Well I never went to Vermont but it sounds like a lot of fun despite the ride. Hrrmm, like I said we didn’t have a lot of family around so sometimes in the summer my family and I would go up the west coast in an RV. All the way up to Oregan to see the redwoods in the state parks, we could park there for a few days and enjoy being away from the cities and just enjoy being outside.” Pausing he thought about any sort of funny story, shuffling through his memories before picking one that he remembered fondly. “There was one time I found this lizard, just a little green one I stuck it on one of the tree while Sara was counting. It was hide and go seek so she couldn’t peek to what I was doing. Anyways after I stuck it there I ran off and hid behind the rv and a no more than a minute later she started to scream. The poor lizard had crawled down the tree and into her shirt and got stuck while she was running around. Oh she was mad at me for the next two days, even refused to talk to me for the whole car ride the next day.” Matt started to laugh, and laugh even more as tears started to come to the corner of his eyes before he finally gathered himself together and shook his head a sad smile crept along his face before he shook his and put on a better smile on for Abbi.

At the description of the mermaid Matt wrinkled his face, “there goes my dreams of meeting Ariel. Flushed away and stuck with sharp talons and things it sounds more like one of those old gruesome drawings in books the ones that look sort of like those Angelfishes.” As for not being bad, there was doubt in Matt’s mind, there was no trust he had with anything of Halloween. “Oh I’m sure I’ll get a promotion one day, no rush really I am more interested in making sure I am at least pretty good at what I need to do. I don’t want to feel useless when the times comes.” A look of some worry or self-doubt flashed on his face as he thought about losing, and losing others. As the drinks came he returned Abbi’s smile with a grin of his own and offered his glass to clank against Abbi’s. “Yes! Cheers and the best of fun at Spring Break.”

Clearly unconvinced of his social ranking, Abbi is coaxed out from behind her menu to chirp a retort.
"That's what all the cool kids say! They think they were normal but they were totally the coolest!" Its a silly thing to latch onto, but she uses the menu once again as a shield to hide that she at least currently thinks he's the coolest.

Half expecting him to play the mystery card some more, the teen is surprised to find Matt actually opening up about his past. Smiling lightly, Abbi lowered her menu once again and let herself imagine what Oregon forests look like, what a younger Matt would be like, what it felt like to have a real family like the one he is describing.
When he begins to laugh, she does too because it really is funny, but her laughter isn't the same as his. It lacks something and she can't figure it out, even when she catches the wistful look before he smiles again.
There's something here, there's a clue in his story and Abbi doesn't know what it is yet. She is becoming determined and will figure it out, but she is also hesitant to ask anymore questions because she saw that look, she knew melancholy. But smiles suit Matt much better and in the end Abbi can only shrug and laugh again.
"Sounds like you guys had a lot of fun. Normal, good fun."

Never would Abbi consider Halloween a lighter topic, but it seems so at the moment and she nods hurriedly.
"She totes looked kind of like an anglerfish! And Ariel is cute, but if we're talking red heads I much prefer Anna." For a beat she pauses before she leans forward to whisper in hushed tones. "Please tell me you've seen Frozen, please tell me you're a Disney dude that would be the best."
With the cheers done Abbi knocked her drink back and took two big gulps before she stopped to laugh.
"Foreign beer always tastes better, who knew?" After setting down her drink and folding her hands under her chin, she smiled across at Matt.
"I think you're pretty good at what you do. You gave me a run for my money during our fight too."

Matt laughed as Abbi peeked out from behind the menu again, “I really wasn’t I mean there were cool kids, the ones that threw wild parties when their parents where gone and always had the most expensive set of clothing in the world. Whose mommies and daddies threw some oversized sixteen parties and got some sort of sports car as a gift. Those where the cool kids, I was in the group below the kids who had a little bit of money but parents didn’t blow it all on stupid things. We had money but not enough to live like we were burning it, and we were always invited to the parties but we really didn’t talk to them.” It was just a group they would go for the fun, chat make fun of the drunk rich kids before finding something better to do.

He was glad when Abbi finally lowered the menu again, laughing at his story about his family’s camping trip. Other than his sister, Matt’s life before Deus had been really normal, he had friends, dreams and hopes and was close to his family and was loved. It was strange, strange in the terms of most at Deus from those who came from less friendlier places. Even the look Abbi gave him made him feel almost guilty for being so privileged, and abandoned to be in a place that was like a crash course of doom. “Yea we did, we had a lot of good times,” a smile still lingered on his face as he flipped over his menu. They were good and normal, but now they were gone.

For a minute Matt made a funny face at Abbi and then laughed, “I can’t call myself a Disney dude, I mean I am already the princess of fairies with my oversized wand so I don’t need any more titles to make me sound like a cute little girl. But I can at least say I have at least seen Frozen, in fact I’ve see all the Disney movies.” He couldn’t help it, it was a story, even if it was meant for kids, and it was hard to resist watching any sort of movie that was at least mostly good.

Taking a large gulp of beer himself he nodded at her comment about foreign beer before returning a smile. “You still beat me, I haven’t actually won a spar yet, not that it has stopped me.”

Though he explains himself more fully, Abbi still thinks he's cool but doesn't say any more on the matter. His whole life is what she had wanted for herself, but she doesn't say that either. She'd mostly forgotten that feeling of longing for normal, especially given how much more interesting things at Deus are now, but for a moment she remembers. Instead of saying anything about it, she takes another big gulp of her beer.

"I mean, you're more like a forest wizard than a little girl, but hey if that's what you prefer." She laughs, but its all in good fun. "OK so what's your favorite movie then?" This is something she will happily talk about, far away from families who may or may not still be there.
"I bet your sister made you watch a ton." As soon as she says it Abbi wishes she hadn't. Talking about old families, especially ones not spoken of before, is usually off limits and she quickly looks down at her menu to keep from visibly grimacing at herself.

"It shouldn't stop you. If you ever stop training just because you can't win a spar, you'll never win and they'll probably kick you out." Her laugh is hollow, and she takes another drink. "You'll win one someday soon! Just takes practice. Like being a doctor!" More like serious dedication, but that wasn't as much fun to talk about.
Their waitress returns soon after and Abbi places her order and hands over the menu, hating to see it go since it was something to hide behind.

If Matt had been some hero in a video game he would have the worst back story every, and just the thought of that made him feel even more guilty as he watched Abbi gulped down more of her beer. He didn’t escape to Deus to find something better in life, and quite honestly half of the s**t he had to deal with was entirely not what he expected. The whole reason he was there was revenge, which was worse in the end.

“I am not entirely sure if forest wizard is great either but it’s definitely a step up from fairy princess, I mean still wearing some robe like dress but wizards have at least those really cool long beards.” Not that Matt truly wanted a beard, it would look awful on him and he would have to cut the other half of his hair off and go with some really short look.

Tapping a finger on the table Matt made a face that obviously displayed he was thinking. “Favorite Disney movie…. Favorite Disney movie…. It depends. Like if we are talking old school Disney cartoon it would have to be Aladdin mostly because who wouldn’t want a genie and a magic flying carpet. Tho I have to admit as a romantic Lady and the Tramp was really great in terms of love, mostly because I loved rooting for the underdog a bit. However hands down I think I have seen The Emperor’s New Groove more times than I can count on my fingers, it’s probably the only movie I can quote almost all the way through. My favorite part is when Pacha and Kuzco are discussing the waterfall before going over.” Pausing with a large grin on his face it took Matt a minute to realize he was rambling on about Disney in a rather dorky unattractive fashion before picking up his menu and burying his face into it. He could feel his cheeks get a little red until he heard Abbi’s voice mentioned his sister again. It hurt, his chest as it felt a twinge of pain as he put the menu back down on the table a forced grin was pasted on his face.

“We used to play hooky when our parents stopped taking us and we would fill up with junk food at the theater and have the room almost ourselves while we watched the movie. The school would call home of course and we would get in trouble but it was always worth it.” The smile on his face hurt as he kept it there as if afraid that if he didn’t the lie would be all over and he would break.

He didn’t say anything for a few minutes, not until after the waitress had taken their orders and the menus away with her. “No worries there, I won’t give up just because I don’t win or at least haven’t won. One day I am sure lady luck with favor me and I will be able to defeat someone and from there more, but it won’t mean I’ll give up.”
