User Image It had been a sleep he needed, one night of pure, uninterrupted rest. They were rare nights, ones he got between jobs and traveling, and lord had he needed this one. He'd wanted to be up before the sun could color the sky blue, but it hadn't happened. He'd slept through the early hours of the morning, through sunrise, but lord was he comfortable.

His name was faint, the brows furrowing and man shifting, bringing the noise closer as though that'd shut it up.

Wait.

What was he holding?

The little tune had him open his eyes, confused. "Military doesn't serve bacon." he mumbled. "Or apples?" he smelled apples.

Brown eyes turned down at the silver hair, trying to remember--

"Gia!" he snapped away like she was fire, "I am incredibly sorry! That was entirely disrespectful of me!" he moved his pillow, finding his glasses and putting them on, bowing his head in apology. "Goodness I am so terribly sorry, Miss Gia! You are more than welcome to slap me if that happens! I'll sleep on the floor from now on!"

User ImageGia smiled, "there you are." Malcom shot away from her and was, predictably, embarrassed and horrified that he'd cuddled her in his sleep. "oh, don't worry about it," she assured as she stood up. "really, it wasn't a big deal, i think i slept better than i have in months! but if you will excuse me, nature calls." she winced slightly and hurried to the bathroom, relieving herself with a sigh. in she was being honest with herself, Malcom had looked rather cute all flustered like that. she washed her hands and walked out, having forgotten her clothing in her bag. "all yours now, i'll just change really quick while you use the restroom. and don't you dare plan on sleeping on the floor. we snuggled, big deal. i really don't mind waking up in the arms of a good looking man. a girl could get used to such things." she tried not to think about how she once was used to it and how that had destroyed everything. she had mainly said it to see what kind of reaction she could get out of Malcom. she had a feeling he'd be fun to tease.

User Image He gave a quick bow of his head, sitting there a moment ntil he heard the door shut. Pajamas were stripped off and he picked his clothes up and put them on. He wasn't fast enough.

His socks were on and his pants and belt were on, but undone, the man working on buttoning his shirt as she walked out.

"Yes well," he said, missing the buttonhole. "We're strangers, Miss Gia. I don't--" But her calling him handsome shut him up, pale skin suddenly taking on a color similar to an apple as he worked the rest of his buttons, tucking in his shirt.

"We'll see, Miss Gia. Thank you for sharing your room with me, I should get to work." He could piss elsewhere, like behind a tree.

He hesitated a moment, wondering if he should compliment her but quickly decided against it, leaving instead and going back down the stairs. Maybe he could apologize later. For now, he had to check the hospital, and looking at the streets outside, he simply started walking, looking at rubble and buildings. Some people were still living inside the buildings.

The hospital wasn't too hard to find, in the end. Malcom just had to find where all the injured people were. Truthfully, majority of the building was fine, but the entire west side was filled with damage, and the second floor of it was gone completely.

"Surprisingly sturdy." he mumbled. "I guess we'll be working here first."

User ImageGia giggled when Malcom hurried away, his buttons missmatched and his face bright red. oh yes, he was going to be a lot of fun. there was no way she was letting him find a different room. at least she could find a little enjoyment in this town and maybe make a friend in the process. she changed into her uniform and walked down to speak with the owner, asking him to make sure that he knew that she was perfectly ok with sharing a room with Malcom and if he should get an opening to please give it to someone else. she grinned and leaned in, whispering how she was looking for a good man like him and hoping to win him over. it wasn't true, of course, but the man winked at her and promised to help her out. she rolled her eyes as she walked out and head for the hospital. ok, it was mean to lie, but it was a harmless lie and really, there were so many people that needed housing, it was silly for them to relocate when they are already settled in.

she hummed and walked to the hospital, but as she walked, her humming slowly died. she kept seeing more and more of the damage that the war had caused. when she reached the hospital, she steadied herself before checking in. a brief talk with the doctor in charge let her know where they were at. things didn't look good. they didn't have the knowledge or the skills to handle what they were dealing with. this wasn't her first time teaching the medical personnel how to take care of their patients. she tied her hair up and got to work.

to her surprise she found Malcom looking at the ruined parts of the hospital. she gave him a wave before going back to work, still fully in her work persona, the teasing girl from earlier gone. she would see him tonight.

User Image Michael saw tGia and he gave a small nod in return, assessing the damage before talking to a nearby nurse, asking about it and where he could find workers. She told him, not that there were many, and went on her way. Malcom could only sigh, tapping the ricks and putting them in storage, all the salvageable ones anyway. He climbed up the floors best he could, continuing to take rubble and store it, but it was getting heavy, he could feel it. Why did rubble take up so much space?

he sighed, moving back down stairs and making a clearing, quickly putting the stones and bricks in order, stacked nicely, and kept moving back and forth, putting them in blocks and kept working like this. his hands were getting dirty despite not actually touching the bricks. Residue being shot out by the magic, he supposed.

But soon it was lunch, and he sat in the shade of the brick piles, no taller than his waist, and ate from a can in hiding.

It was hot in this village wasn't it?

User ImageAround lunchtime one of the head doctors pulled Gia aside and insisted she eat. when she tried to refuse, saying she had too much work to be done, she insisted. they didn't want her dropping from fatigue and hunger, they needed her too much. Gia gave in after a small amount of time, not about to tell the elderly woman she hadn't eaten in well over a month. It was her most recent attempt at forcing her body to shut itself down. she drank water, only because not doing so made it all but impossible to speak and as a doctor, she needed to be able to talk to her patients.

Gia refused the food she offered, however, holding up her pack to show she had her own supplies. now it was a matter of finding somewhere that she wouldn't be seen to sit and wait. tomorrow she would make sure to be working in a place where they wouldn't bother her about eating. she wandered for a bit before finding several piles of neatly arranged bricks. and who did she find behind those bricks? why, her new favorite builder!

"you sure work fast," she said as she sat down on one of the piles of bricks. "any particular reason you're scrunched up down there, or were you hiding from someone?" someone like me, her brain added.

User Image Michael jumped at the sound of a voice, looking up to see his roommate from the inn.

"It's hot and I prefer to eat in the shade." he explained, going back to his eating. "What about you, why are you hiding here? Have you eaten?" he took another can from beside himself, offering it. "Peaches. They'll give you some energy. If you're working with all the patients, you need to be more healthy than me." he went back to eating his own food. "it's just hot in this part of the world. I'll take shade where I can find it. Do you want to sit down too? You might get burned." and he did not have any cream if that pale skin of hers was burnt.

User ImageGia smiled and shook her head, "i've eaten, just taking a bit of a break. there is only so much death and decay a lady can take before she needs to sit down." it was very kind of him to offer her a spot next to him in the shade and she wasn't going to refuse it, even though her body wouldn't allow a sunburn to form. "thank you," she said and she slide down to the ground beside him. "it is a lot cooler here, that's for sure. it's fairly cold where i am from. it took a lot of time for me to get used to the heat, but I still prefer the cold. bundling up and drinking something hot while snuggling with another warm body-" her eyes turned inward as she remembered night just like that. watching the snow fall to the ground while being held by her love.

a single tear slid down her cheek and Gia quickly wiped it away, returning to the now and forcing back her past. "What about you? what is it like where you are from?"

User Image He nodded and set the can down when she refused, going back to his own. The man listened to her description of her home, looking at her while chewing. She silenced for a moment, making him curious, but the tear immediately smashed it. She seemed to come back to reality, pushing it away like it never happened.

"I'm from the capital. Buildings, towers, houses. I was from the poor part. Seasons happened, never too hot or too cold, but being poor I didn't know how to get out of it, so I joined the military." he thought, eating the last of the can's contents. "We kinda stuck to ourselves but at the same time watched out for others. Be involved, but not too involved. Not that it ever worked, I remember other parents scolding me or feeding me or giving me clothes. It was the same all around. Pretty friendly, just poor." he shrugged. "Joined the military soon as I got out of school and traveled around. I've experienced both hot and cold in the extremes, and I like neither." he laughed. "I prefer moderate climates."

User ImageGia nodded, "sounds nice..." and really it did. An entire community coming together, working to help one another. it hit her how that sounded, though and she quickly backtracked, "that-i mean, well, i didn't mean that being poor or anything sounded nice, just everyone looking out for eachother and-" she sighed and dropped her face into her palm, "sorry. it's just, well I hardly ever saw my parents. when it was discovered that i," she didn't dare mention her former ability, "had an early affinity for medicine, they sent me off to the best education money could buy. I trained and learned everything i possibly could and entered the medical force when I was still quite young. the school i went to was nice, but we had nothing like that. everyone was too busy studying and working towards their goals to even make friends." she shrugged, "being in a community like that sounds like what I always dreamed a real family would be like. I'm sure there are thousands of hardships that a spoiled brat like me wouldn't even think of and my saying that i would have loved a life like that is condescending and I apologize for that, but i really and truly believe i would have been completely happy."

Gia checked the sun and stood, "i should get back, thank you for sharing your shade." she turned to leave, giving a little wave before remembering the fruit in her sack wasn't going to last much longer. "here, I'm not going to eat this and hard working men need more to work on than canned goods." she reached in and pulled out an apple, "consider it an apology for my being an a**." she tossed the fruit to Michael, "see you tonight."
