Kara’s shoulders sank a fraction at the answer she knew she would get. Despite knowing, it did not make it any easier. “How am I supposed to get to know him if mother and father don’t allow us down the mountains? I can’t sneak out like this constantly.” She frowned, pausing for a moment. “And we’re bound to get into trouble, as it is, this time.” She sighed, gaze flicking to her brother. “It’s not fair. I finally make a friend of my own and I can’t even see him that often. At least you can visit with Dysarrin.”

“Mm…you are right, it’s not,” Ataya conceded. “Were it up to me, we would be free by now to visit Taliuma as often as we liked, and beyond that if it caught our fancy. But life, dear sister, wasn’t apparently designed on such lofty principles as ‘fairness’ and ‘justice.’” He clipped his reins, lightly spurning Rannah to trot a fraction faster as his gaze flit towards the moon. “Come. We should make good time tonight if we want to have any opportunity to enjoy ourselves before trouble comes our way. Perhaps,” he added, “if we are lucky, you soon will be able to visit your ‘not’ boyfriend at will.”
