Rasali had been expecting Aandes to hit her. She’d turned to face him head-on with a sneer, but found herself thrown off when he instead withdrew. Tactical retreat was not a concept familiar to Rasali.

Aandes’ pull back allowed Rasali enough space to pull her chain back over her shoulder. She pushed off the wall behind her and closed the gap between the two of them. Perhaps this time she could roll away from Aandes in time to avoid a counterattack.

If not, well, perhaps this comfort thing went both ways.

Damnit -- a tactical strategist Aandes was not. He darted back, but he was winded. At this rate she'd catch up with him and give him a good wallop. He was practically a sitting target. His bark was bigger than his bite, after all. It would be simple. Let him off easy; kick him to the curb and get out. At least he'd be bruised and bleeding in his own hive. Aandes frowned.

His self deprecation was doing more harm than the chain. Its marks still stung pleasantly across his back.

Rasali breathed in quick puffs as adrenaline shook her vision. Aandes was on the other side of the room now. Rasali had the ability to close the gap with another hit, but instead she just stood and drank in the moment. Aandes wasn’t running anymore—not really. He seemed reluctant to hurt her, to put an end to things. Maybe he really cared? Maybe he was just distracted. This was a matter that required further investigating, and Rasali standing around pondering theories wasn’t going to get either of them anywhere.

A sour expression contorted Aandes' face. There wasn't much room in the hive for this face-off, and Rasali was blocking the stairs with her width. He would have told her as much if he was finding it easier to breathe. A fluid motion and his chakrams were connected again. He spun the weapon in front of him and advanced. The silence was killing him.

"I don't win anything from this! There's no point!" Aandes blurted. His tone was nearly fearful.

Aandes had such a petulant look on his face. His breathing was heavy, but his manipulation of his weapons was still so graceful. He wasn’t through yet. If Aandes didn’t realize that himself, then Rasali would show him what it really meant to be finished.

”Are you really that dense!?” Rasali whipped her chain around, loosening it from her hand until it was nearly extended its full length. She hit Aandes in the side and grabbed the opposite end as it came back around. She used the momentum to trade their places, throwing Aandes across the room.

”Of course you don’t win if you don’t try! You b*****d… I’m trying to help you!”

Aandes yelped as he was struck hard in the side. Letting loose felt freeing, and finally Rasali was swinging with her all. He stumbled, tossed onto the stairs. His vision shifted slower than his pan could track. He shook his head to remove the residual blur and clutched the stair rail, trying not to fall. What a rush. But she wasn't done.

The nerve. Aandes flushed bright green, nearly teal in the cool lights of his hive. Did she think he was one of her test subjects? Some broken toy to fix and flaunt? He flared up with anger and took a step up the stairs.

"I'm sick and tired of your motivational bullshit!" Aandes screamed. "You're as fake as I am!"

Aandes had taken quite the hit. Rasali stayed back to admire her work. She was finally beginning to feel the fatigue of the battle compete with the heat of her emotions. Aandes…

”You’re as fake as I am!”

How DARE he. Rasali yanked her chain back. It whipped against the floor, cracking it in Rasali’s misplaced rage.

”You can be as sick of me as you want, but don’t you dare spew s**t like that as if it’s true! ‘Fake…’ What the ******** do you think I’m here for!?” Rasali couldn’t accept such a statement. She wouldn’t even allow Aandes the chance to respond. ”You’re a small-time sleaze, Aandes. If you’re gonna run away from anything that troubles you, go ahead and stay here—waste away in your little hidey-hole!”

Rasali felt her chest clench at the imagery. ”But if you do decide to do something, that bad attitude of yours is gonna get you and a lotta people in big trouble. If you’re too wrapped up in your own neurosis to see that, then so be it! I’ll be there to snap you out of it and your dumb opinions won’t have any bearing on the matter!”

”Tch…” Talking was pointless. Aandes wasn’t going to get it. Maybe if she could beat him into submission and leave, she could at least save her own pride.

Be careful what you wish for.

Aandes cringed, but she kept going. It was as though every one of his fears was being targeted and skewered with every syllable. Loathsome spittle, all of it, but all of it true.

He'd wasted weeks doing nothing. Taking risks was deadly on either side, but inaction left him cold. Frivolous bullshit, all of it. Everything until now was child's play, and he was too afraid the next step.

If he was to be on the border of the rebellion and the military, he'd need to do something to cover his a**. No one could bail him out if he were to fall, because he couldn't see past his own facade enough to save himself. But she knew, and she was here to wake him up. How dare she. Rasali had him wrapped around her finger all along. He just hoped she'd see herself in him. Disgusting. Aandes' black heart bloomed.

He wasn't going to let her off that easy, though. Aandes ripped his wrist back and snapped it back out to flick his weapon at Rasali. A taunt. "Stop kissing your own fat a**, princess."

He backtracked a step further and snarled.

Rasali took the knick from the chakram with grit teeth and a snarl. Predictable. Aandes wasn’t going to budge—at least not externally. If that was the case, then the clearest option was to peel back the layers. Rasali could oblige.

’Fat… a**…’ Rasali could oblige real hard.

With an overhand swing, Rasali ran at Aandes. Anymore talking was just going to embarrass them both. Despite Rasali’s sentiments, neither she nor Aandes were touchy-feely people. Rasali wasn’t about to leave this altercation empty-handed, even if all she received was the catharsis of beating Aandes with a padlock.

DMG: ********!" Aandes cried out in a peal of pain as the smiley chain made definite contact. Served him right. He tried to backtrack and ended up tripping on the stairs, falling backwards onto his hands. He scrambled up a few flights, shielding his body with his arms and holding tight onto his weapon. "********! ******** you!" He squealed.

At this point, Aandes was fighting Rasali off through a solid effort to struggle. He kicked and fought, worming away from her weapon the best he could. Every lash brought a new wave of aggression out of Aandes. He was nearly at the top of the short flight of stairs when he growled and slashed at her again from his nearly prone position.

Fighting on a staircase was much more difficult than Rasali had anticipated. The railing interfered with her swing and the steps made her footing unstable. Rasali failed to dodge the chakram yet again, but Aandes’ even worse position left Rasali with but a graze across the cheek. If Aandes had cut off any of her hair with that, there would be hell to pay.

Aandes used Rasali's discomfort to his advantage. He made his way up to the final step while dealing inelegant blows to Rasali when he could. Humiliating. Absolutely humiliating. Strangely satisfying. As he was trapped and forced up the stairs, Aandes couldn't help but imagine jumping out the window. He'd probably be fine. Koalapops fell out of trees all the time.

Aandes stumbled to his feet to catch his breath.

Somehow the act of being winded after walking up a flight of stairs made Rasali feel pathetic, regardless of the surrounding context. The chakram ricocheting off her weapon was practically inconsequential. She glared at Aandes for putting her through this whole debacle... Even if it was irritatingly enjoyable. She snorted with a weak smirk that said "Get the ******** up so we can get off this goddamn staircase."

They were stood solid on the second floor now -- Aandes' respiteblock, ablutionblock and garment block were just a step away in any given direction.

Everything stung, but Aandes was nearing his breaking point. Between the countless bruises covering his body and the taste of iron in his mouth, all that was left in his mind was to come out with a victory.

That being said, playing into Rasali's hand wasn't something Aandes wanted to do. But, for some reason he did what she asked without hesitation or glib. Even if he went for a quick swipe, but wouldn't be fast enough.

Finally they were at the top of the stairs. Rasali felt there was some kind of symbolism happening at that moment, but mostly she just felt tired. She still had work to do, though. One more hit was all it would take.

Rasali threw herself at Aandes shoulder-first. The two of them ricocheted off the doorframe of Aandes’ respiteblock and into the room. Rasali’s chain was lost somewhere in the process. Rasali wanted both hands free to grapple Aandes to the ground—should the need arise. They’d fought enough. They were both exhausted. Rasali needed her answer.

Rasali fell to the floor heavily on her side while clutching Aandes forearm in a death-grip. She allowed herself to hiss and wince, but pinned Aandes with a glare as soon as she was able. Her hand on his arm was unmoving.

”…” All this time and struggle to reach this point and Rasali didn’t know what to say. She had feelings, and she had words, but any combination of the two that made sense was just terrifying.

But Rasali had to try. She swore she wasn’t fake. She beat a man up for saying as much. (And she’d easily do it again.) Aandes’ accusations and Rasali’s pride forced her to take a deep breath and try again.

”Do you… hate me.” Rasali winced and told herself it was from the lacerations. That was so forward, so desperate. Rasali tried to justify it.

”I don’t want to be like you.” The more she tried, the more vulnerable, Rasali felt. She could so easily become this cloying, manipulative b*****d—so easily that she wouldn’t even know until it was too late. The thought of losing control to that degree was terrifying. Much more terrifying than baring her fears to Aandes.

’Don’t let me become like you.’ Rasali couldn’t bring herself to say it. Her breathing was ragged and her vision was swimming with exertion, or maybe tears. Her grip slackened on Aandes, but her hand remained where it was.
