Al wrinkled his nose at Melvin in confusion, deciding to wing it instead. He split the dough inti two balls and grabbed the rolling pin, flowering it lightly before smoothing out the first ball and moving it to fill the pie dish, he smoothed out the second before turning to the other ingredients. "Rest of this is for the filling I'm guessing?"

Melvin stepped in closer, reaching out for where a bowl of apples were. "Yes. I was pre-measuring to ...lessen any problems I might encounter. I've just been slowly reading over everything, but it has a lot more steps than I imagined. " He pulled the bowl of apples to him and then the peeler and decided he could at least do that.
"Did you make pies at home?" He didn't suspect many men knew how to make pies of all things.

Al eased up what he was doing until he was completely stopped and waiting for the apples to get situated. He glanced over at them, taking a mental tally and trying to calculate if there would be any leftover for him.
He nodded at the question, "yup". But gave nothing more of himself.
"You?" He already knew the answer.

Melvin continued to peel apples, reaching up to get a clean bowl from the cabniet and putting the peels (though still uncut] apple in the bowl. "No. My family made pies during holidays. Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas. You get the idea."
He peeled slower now. "The women in our family would get together and cook. Guys would go and watch tv, set up the dining room, or be outside cooking or playing sports or something else. I do have a nephew who loves to cook, but usually just helped clean up and talked while in the kitchen. Catching up with everyone. Sorta family tradition more than anyone had to clean or cook or whatever."
He peeled another apple and put it aside. "What about you? Your family teach you?"
