Viatyl felt his hesitation and let out another small whimper as she hobbled along into the cave. "Let's hide quickly," she whispered allowing a tremble of fear to enter her voice. "Before it finds us."

"W'at did yeh say it was, again?" he asked as he followed behind her, slowly. He paused long enough to drag the branches to shield the cave.

Viatyl crouched down near the cave floor. "I...I didn't see it," she said trying to slow her breathing, at least trying to make it sound like she was slowing her breathing, "I'm not sure, didn't really stay around long enough to get a good look, you know," she whispered the last part as another loud roar split the air. Shydyl was really laying it on thick today.

Paelor jumped at the roar and cursed softly, more to himself than to the mare behind him. "Sounds like a bobcat," he muttered. "If we're lucky, leastways. Could be a walker. Yeh dun wanna tangle wit' a walker. Ever met one?"

As it so happened she hadn't had the pleasure of ever meeting a walker and never intended to. Honestly, those things had no sense of reason or even self-preservation in most cases. All those things were reasons why her self-preservation instincts told her to stay far away from them. But right now she was a the damsel in distress so all she could do was look at him with wide, frightened eyes and shake her head slowly, "No...have you?"

"Naw," he snorted softly, peering out between the leaves that hid their entrance. "Saw one, once. Big fella, but t'en, t'ey're all big, 'in't t'ey?" He wasn't really paying attention to what he was saying, just talking absently with distant hope of calming her distress. The subject matter probably could have been chosen better, but most of his facilities were occupied with trying to find the trap he could smell.

"I'd rather not see them at all," she said quietly. "Maybe you should come away from the entrance, we could hide further back in the cave?"

"If somet'in' comes in, we're stuck," he countered. "'Less yeh know a way outta 'ere t'at Ah don'?" Maybe that was what felt so off about this whole situation.

Well, it looks like this is a smart fellow, that's unfortunate, she sighed internally and waited for another gut twisting roar from Shydyl. Her surprise was immeasurable when instead of a fearsome roar she instead heard protective growling, low and a warning. This was not how they moved the target - she ran to the front of the cave, shoving the male aside to get a good look beyond the cave, "What was that?" she whispered under her breath, no longer feigning fear but truly concerned for her friend.
Several yards from the opening of the cave Shydyl was crouched low, letting out long warning growls. The walker had nearly snuck up on her as she let out her echoing howls - nearly scream like in their nature. Thinking back on it, those were probably what drew the walker to her. Probably thought it was a human actually screaming. Her bad luck. She growled again at the walker and slashed at the monster with her paw - doing her best to show that she wasn't afraid of the beasty.

Something had happened... the mare's entire air had changed. At long last, Paelor realized what had been rubbing him the wrong way. NOW the mare seemed genuinely scared. Which meant she'd been conning him. He wondered what kind of beastie was really out in the forest, and how many poor saps she had pulled this trick on before. Then it sank in that she was actually afraid and uncertain now. Something wasn't going according to plan.
Namir, in his feral form, snarled at the kitten who dared to think she could strike him. He lunged forward, snapping for her. While bobcat was not his preferred meal, he was willing to teach this upstart fluffball a lesson.

"Oh no," Viatyl blanched seeing Shydyl backing away from the fearsome wolf. "That thing is bigger than any wolf I've ever seen, meaner too." And Shydyl who could usually hold her own was still in a defensive posture. That didn't speak well of anything. "She can't deal with that thing on her own," Viatyl growled scooping up one of the larger branches in her mouth and despite her better judgement, hell against all judgement, she went running towards the brawl. She might not have been a fighter, but that was her partner out there and she wasn't about to left some stupid dog eat her.
Shydyl was growing a little concerned and was trying to figure out just how effective it would be to try and outrun this thing. Or to at least make a dash for a tree and start climbing. Of course all those thoughts were dashed when Viatyl made an appearance on the scene. Foolish little horse, no matter how could she tried to be the little thing too often led with her heart - in this matter her head would have been a better bet.

Paelor cursed inventively when the mare dashed out. He tried to grab her tail to stop her, but the strands slipped out of reach of his mouth before he could snap down on them. He was NOT a hero. That out there was a walker! Were they not just talking about avoiding those things? Did she not realize that it wasn't an ordinary wolf? He was not going to risk his neck for her.... "Aw, 'ell!" he muttered, charging out after her. His legs were a little longer than hers, so he was able to catch up to her with a bit of ease. He rammed his shoulder into her to knock her out of the way as the wolf changed direction and went for the more tender of meal choices.
Namir skidded to a halt when he missed the little black mare. He had lost interest in the bobcat as soon as the two bitesized morsels had appeared. With the little black one out of the way, he focused on the closer option... the white male.
Seeing that, Paelor blanched. "S'it...." and this was why he wasn't a hero.

Viatyl was mad. She was mad that the easy con had gone south! She was mad that the wolf had messed with her Shydyl! And she was PISSED that the target had pushed her! She took out all that aggression on the easiest of sources - the back of the wolf's legs. It was an impassioned swing of her very large stick and the little mini had strength when she really needed it. Besides, Kneecaps were Always fair game.

Namir went down just in reach of his newest target. He snarled and twisted to snap at the black mare. A split second later, he felt like a fool. As he was now, he was roughly the same size as his prey. It was time to take the full advantage. He shifted to his equine form.
Paelor muttered a soft litany of curses as he dodged around the shifting walker. "Run, run, run, run, run, run," he managed between curses."

"Damn," Viatyl muttered around the branch. "I guess that would be a skinwalker..." she didn't have much more time to ponder the situation because Shydyl was already working to push/shove/pull her well out of the range of the walker. Once she was running well on her own she called to the stallion (because it's hard to think of him as a target when they were all running for their lives - prey doesn't get to judge prey), "How do we ditch this thing?"
Never one to wait for fortune to provide, Shydyl bounded a few paces ahead and let the mini horses pass before pulling back a large but supple branch conveniently lined with briar plants. She really did have to do everything...
