Any other time and that sort of line likely would have resulted in a rousing sing-a-long, even if it was strictly one sided. Today, however, Roland's joke was met with a twitch of a smile and roll of her eyes as they headed towards the elevator. Snowboarding sounded tricky, but really, why not? "I dunno, never tried either. But We can find out maybe?" For now though, she had her heart set on a pair of skates and the polished ice of a rink. The elevator doors slid open into the lobby, and Peyton stepped out, hands sinking into her pockets. The rink and rentals was right next door, so it didn't take long at all to wander over and pick up a pair of skates each. Peyton had picked figure skates, lacing them up tightly. She stood at the edge of the rink on the little rubber pad designed especially to make it safe to walk on with blades fastened to the bottom of your feet. It had been years, years since she'd done this, and now she wondered if she remembered how.

Had it been any other time Roland would have joined in without a doubt because that's just the kind of corny thing he expected of Peyton for his jokes. A twitch of a smile and most importantly the roll of her eyes, that slight hit that the sharp witted Sun was still in there was a start.
"Cool I've done neither so we can tumble down the slope like beginners anyway." He followed along slipping into the elevator as another thought crossed his mind.
"Least if we screw up and fall we got shields to keep the worst of broken limbs at bay right?" Perks of being a hunter right? There had to be some somewhere.
Marching over to the ring Roland looked at the skates back and forth tapping his chin before pointing out a pair of hockey skates. A few seconds of lacing later and he was standing beside Peyton. "Well.... ladies first right?"

Ladies first. Peyton gave a look that was lost somewhere between amusement and something sadder. She just wasn't herself, and all at once she was sorry for it. Roland hadn't done anything, and though she wasn't taking anything out on him, she really wasn't trying all that hard to be good company either. After a quiet moment she aimed a somewhat larger smile at him, reassuring but mostly forced, though with any luck he wouldn't notice the latter. "Watch me fall right on my a**." Cautiously she stepped out on the ice, and there was a wobbly moment where she had to relearn how to balance on the skates, but when she regained her balance she seemed steady. It was slow going, getting the feel of being on ice after so many years, but after a handful of minutes she seemed to have gotten it. Stopping, she waited for Roland to chance the ice to come out and join her.

Roland just sort of stood there rocking side to side on the blades of his skates looking at Peyton waiting for some kind of reaction before she eventually just gave him a smile. "If it happens you said it and jinxed yourself not me." With that she was off slipping across the ice, not really stable, but making her way along. He still stood on the side watching her go as his hand turned his phone over and over in his pocket. Finally he took a few quick steps and slid out onto the ice, everything seemed okay for a moment and then his legs started to buckle as he hadn't tied his one skate on tight enough. "s**t shitshitshitshit!" Stumbling staggering and nearly falling over he bumped right into and off of Peyton before scrambling to get down on one knee and fix his skate. "Sorry sorry, I'm an idiot..."

"Well, I guess that'd just be fitting for my luck lately." It was said quietly, almost a whisper. More for herself than a response to Roland's comment. She watched him creep out onto the ice, hands slipping into her pockets since she didn't currently need them for balance. An unfortunate choice, since moments later the Mist came stumbling forward and collided with her, sending them both crashing down onto the ice. Luck had her falling on her back, and she gave a very startled yelp as she landed, stunned. It was luck that kept her head from bouncing off the ice, and she'd somehow avoided landing on her tailbone. It meant she was stunned, but not hurt. "Gotta tie those tighter, buddy." Slowly the tension left her body, and as Roland set to securing his laces, Peyton settled against the ice. Just a moment, gave directed up and into the sky, then she was sitting up again.

Roland gave her a look he saw her say something but didn't catch it at all, this probably also didn't help with his concentration when he fell into her.
The adjusting of his laces didn't take too long and soon he was standing in front of her his hand held out to her to help her up. "I'm a klutz okay? Let's just let the record show that and never ever mention to anyone back at the island."
He paused, "You're okay though right? I don't wana go and ruin your break by knocking you out in the first hour..."

"The record shall hence forth reflect that Roland Taft is a klutz." At least now she was smiling. The offered hand was taken, and with his help she got her skates under her again, balance regained a second or two after. "Thanks." Releasing his hand, she'd glide a little ways away from him, and leaning into a neat little turn. "Everything seems to be in working condition, so I think I'm alright." She shifted her feet experimentally, inching backwards. Slow at first, but steadily going faster until she was sliding along at a nice, leisurely pace. It was very much like roller skating in most ways, and not at all in others.

"Good to know I can trust you on official record keeping Pey." The smile was real this time, it was a nice change of pace as he helped tug her up onto her feet, "No problem."
Standing still for the moment he watched as she drifted away along the ice nodding, "Good, I'd be a horrible Mist Moon if I broke you."
While she started off inching backwards Roland finally started to slid after her, the soft click of his skates as he started to regain the idea of how to skate. It really had been a while and he found he wasn't too fond of going fast yet, but he did eventually catch up to her.
"I don't think I've ever asked but, where did you come from? Before you know, the island and stuff. Did you skate much back there?"

Poor Roland just couldn't catch a break. The question about her home town chased the smile away until it was just a shell of it's former glory, and she dropped her gaze, watching her feet as she slid along backwards. "Oregon, though we moved around a lot after my mom did." This was never a topic she was especially chatty about. "I didn't do much ice skating." She would feel things getting awkward again, and it really wasn't Ro's fault. It was her's, her sour mood, no matter how justified it might be. He was trying so hard though. "We went roller skating though, quite a few times."

"I moved a few times too. Military, was never my choice, we went from Florida to Massachusetts." He saw the smile fading quickly and his own started to drop. "From sun and fun to ice and learning to skate..."
She was skating away again, his own pace moving to catch up as he glided alongside her. "I didn't like roller skates outside of a ring. The every bump and crack in the ground made me feel like I was going to fall."
There was another pause and his eyes dropped to the ice, "Sorry if, asking about home was rude, I know, not all of us come from happy times. Or just don't wana talk about it... I just... yeah." He skated along some more, "Sorry..."

"Rinks were the best," she agreed, glad for the change of topic. Swaying back and forth as she slid smoothly over the ice. "Smooth, the music, the snacks and arcade." She'd taken Astrid a few times, it'd been fun. The pause wasn't interrupted, though she wished she would have as he continued. "No, it's okay. You didn't know." There was nothing for him to have to apologize for. She was the one that was overly sensitive about her home life, and she was the one acting weirdly now. Roland wasn't doing anything wrong. The poor Mist was just trying to nice, supportive, and she was making it so hard on him. Lips pursed, she looked up. "I'm sorry, I'm not great company." A small hand touched his arm. "Thank you for coming with me so I didn't have to be alone. I do appreciate it, even if it doesn't really show."

"And don't forget birthday parties, I never had one there but I had a friend who's 10th birthday was at a skating rink..." For a moment a lopsided grin crossed his face, "I thnk that was one of the first times I eally remember trying to skate."
He didn't hold any of it against her, somthing was wrong, he didn't yet know the reason was sitting right in his pocket though the curious thought of what it might be was growing stronger the more they spoke.
Suddenly he was caught up with her, skating in tandem as a small hand brushed his arm, "Peyton, you know I would always do stuff for you like this." He frowned a bit none the less, "I just. I don't want to lose you, like I lost Nevada. I made a mistake, I made a lot of mistakes and I lost someone I cared about. Twice. I just.... I don't want to make those kind of mistakes again that might cost me this." A hand gestured absently in the air.
His hand dropped down to the side but he made not move to touch her in that moment letting her hand rest on his arm still, "I don't know what's wrong, but ou know I'm always here for you Pey. So don't... don't go running off or forgetting who I am and stuff yeah? I'd be short one really good sparring slahs lunch partner."

She blinked at him, slightly taken a back, not at all sure where this business of running off or forgetting was coming from. "I'm not going anywhere, Roland. I'm not gunna forget you. You're my friend." She frowned at him, sliding to a slow stop, as she cocked her head to one side. "I'm not mad at you." Her hand remained on his arm, a soft weight as she drew him to a stop beside her so she could turn and face him, looking up. "My bad mood, it's not because of you." pale eyes searched his face for understanding. "You know that, right?"

They continued to slide along, Roland having seemingly rambled off all his insecurity at once. That tiny hand still resting on his arm. Slowing him down beside her.
Finally he looked at her his own dark eyes flickering across her face, "I just, I know in the past. I've said things or done things, and you seemed to get. Distant? When we where sparring, when I asked if you wanted to go and get Mexican food on a leave."
His own hand moved to rest on her shoulder as they stood there in the middle of the ice. "I know it's not me, I don't even know what it is, I'm just afraid of making things worse. Because I've done that before, and I don't want to do that right now."

"Those didn't have anything to do with you, Roland. That was me, my issues." Her fingers wrapped into the sleeve of his jacket briefly before loosening and sliding down until she was folding her arms across her stomach. "After the spar you said something that made me think, wondering about myself. The mexico thing was because... I felt bad. It sounded kind of like a date, but I'd just gotten together with Noah..." She looked away, not meeting his eye now. "You just gotta be there and be a good friend, and everything'll be fine, okay?"
