He raised his brows at the comment on janarim and his grin stayed. It was unfortunate that he couldn't make the race itself, and doing that it seemed he wasn't invited to the party either, but he'd survive.
"We have a little bit of everything. A great deal of quhar and some janarim..." A lot of which they had lost in the latest battle. An animal didn't really get any say in the danger it was put it. He grimaced slightly, but caught himself and let his facial muscles relax again. There was no time for that.
Every time someone asked about the compound, he was tempted to share the story of the creeping hell-spiders wreaking havoc. Nobody ever believed him, though. He wouldn't either! The squirming beasts were long since gone, though, and without proof he usually chose to just not share.
"Yeah, I think I will," he nodded. "I'll keep a lookout for signs, and I'll be sure to come find you." Finding one girl in a crowd of hundreds or thousands? Eh, not a problem.
"Oh? Do jockeys generally own their own mounts?" With the mention of sponsors he figured they might just be hired for their skill and handed a xaraan to ride. That just went to show how much he knew about racing them.

grasshopper pie he could totes come to party anyways XD I forgot to have her invite him to that.. ah well~ She noticed the slight grimace at Janarim when he was mentioning what animals they had.... there was a story there! Maybe one had bitten him? "You seem a bit... unhappy about the Janarim? Did one bite you one too many times?" She teased slightly; she'd been stepped on, kicked, and pecked by Xaraan herself... painful and you learned real quickly what not to do! Surely the Janaraim who were known for their vicious and protective nature did the same! "They usually happen once a week during spring and fall... when its not too hot or too cold." But it rained... which made for a messy run but also allowed those Xaraan who were better on uncertain surfaces to outrace the normally faster Xaraan! Always a fun time. If he tried to meet her at the race... she hid a smirk, he'd never find anyone in that loud crowd! She thought on the question; did jockeys own their mounts? "Hmm.... The older ones do... new ones just starting out usually are paid to race some sponsor's Xaraan.. if they win they keep racing, if they lose too many times they get dropped. Those with sponsors split the winnings so eventually they should be able to own their own Xaraan... I want to own my own... that way iffn I get a sponsor I get a bigger cut of any winnings since they're only helping to pay the entry fees and not for the Xaraan care and all that.

"Hm?" Her question confused him. When had he ever said he didn't like janarim? The great beasts could be difficult, but he was just as fond of them as any other. He just wasn't a war rider, which was fine with him. He grew attached to his furry (or scaly, feathery...) buddies.
"Nah, I've got no problem with janarim. I've been doing this years now, I've worked with some." Sure, they got ornery sometimes, but so did everything else. He smiled and nodded, still unsure why she had asked but not wanting to dissuade her in asking about it. Instead, he responded to her offer to find her. "Alright, will do! I was going to ask how I might find you."
Split the winnings... so it was usually cash, then? He made enough to survive but didn't have much extra, so winning large sums of money was beyond his scope of understanding, really. Good for her, shooting for the stars! Life wasn't much fun if you didn't have dreams. The idea of being dropped, though... that seemed harsh. Reasonable, but harsh.
"Oh, wow. Is it sort of cutthroat behind the scenes?"

She cocked her head: "Then why did you frown when you mentioned your compound had Janarim?" She asked curiously. Maybe there was a story or something behind it....She did love gossip and stories from beast charmers! She laughed at the cutthroat comment; "Oh it is! On the racetrack and off! Fight for popularity, better sponsors, bragging, showing off... all the fun amusing activities of glory hounds!" She laughed again; it was cutthroat all right! And fun, it made you feel alive... "The fans of the more popular jockeys are probably just as bad or even worse than the jockeys!"

"Ah! I can imagine," Sebastien nodded. Even in everyday life there was a fair share of healthy competition. He rather enjoyed it himself and did lose gracefully, believe it or not; with a bit of sarcasm undoubtedly, but gracefully.
As for the question about elaboration on janarim... should he? everything had been so positive and upbeat up until this point, but the girl did seem eager. Maybe he could keep the tone positive if he didn't act like the event was upsetting as it had been?
"As for the janarim, uh... well. I was at the latest battle, and the one before. We lost most of our janarim and most of our riders. I lost a lot of friends, so... maybe I don't have the best associations with janarim." He smiled and offered her a wink. He didn't want to drag them down, really he didn't!

grasshopper pie Hope you don't mind me wrapping it up? Her eyes widened a bit; she'd really put her foot into her mouth with that comment hadn't she! Sanele was about to apologize when she heard Lan's voice calling her over. "Be there in a sec!" She called over her shoulder. "Gotta go now Sebastian.. Iffn you can't make this race then stop by any fourth day and I'll probably be at Lan's place! I should be able to get an afternoon of since I've covered for my freinds enough times they can do the same for me." She clucked to her Xaraan, and gave Sebastian a grin and wave as she left to go meet with her boss.

He saw a startled expression cross her face and couldn't help but smile. The poor thing. At least she didn't give time for the sick feeling in his belly to stick around. She really was a cute little thing...
"Oh? I'll be sure to stop by," he replied with a nod, "If I miss your next race, good luck ahead of time! Have a good day, Sanele." He raised his hand as she left and then turned to the quhar still lazily munching.
"Come on, you. We should probably go find that guy before the boss gets impatient." He tapped the beast's flank and tugged his rope gently and they were off, searching for the man Sebastien knew only by name!
