Melvin took the end of the rope without hesitation, and pulled with the given strength of his weapon bond. He too shared the same amazement time and time again of his questionable strength, something he was never given or had earned before going to Deus. He felt it was like cheating, being this strong, stronger than other men, without actually doing anything. He didn't work out as much as those men in the gym (even if he did work out more than he used to), but he didn't have the muscle to logically tell him that he physically should be able to do what he was doing.
However, he did enjoy it.
Once Jan was out, Horace was assessing him, as was Melvin – but in a different way.
After a moment, he moved over and placed his hand between Horace and Jan and then looked the other man over, noticing no change in his body. He then turned to look behind him, noticing he still had his scar.
Still, he had to be sure.
"Jan.." He reached over and offered him some water and then looked directly at him. "I need you to summon your weapon. I need to be sure about something."

"You think you need one." Lawr stated in a rare glimmer of sarcastic humour. Once he was out, he knelt on the sand before standing with his usual defiant pride, he was not injured short of a few rapidly fading bruises from the initial fall into the room. He leaned into the touch, however brief it was. "I felt it would be routing scouting, I evidently made a huge mistake in that, not one that I will repeat."
Horace's shirt was duly pulled on, too large for the slight fragile man, but just right for purpose at present.
Melvin got a look, a cold and distant look for his comment and for a moment Lawrence was inclined to defy what could be perceived as an order, to tell Melvin that he was not told what to do by those who belonged to him, but he did not, instead conceding that the two men had seen Butch and likely would again before long.
The long lethal talons were duly summoned, gleaming beautiful and deadly in the sunlight. He always felt vulnerable when they were present, as if it was some identifying mark that he could not deny, bound to his very core self and soul (if he possessed a soul at all)
"Happy?" he asked.

Horace had barked a short laugh at Jan's quip. "I'm just glad you're ok, Jan." His smile faltered for a second when Melvin suggested Jan summon - it was protocol, but Jan so rarely seemed to summon... But he did and there was his weapon, all gleaming blue blades like spider's legs or the bones in bird's wings. "Let's get back to camp - and then you can give us a rundown, Jan?" ---------------------------------- The next few hours were uneventful - mainly consisting of applying aloe vera to Jan's skin and trying to convince him not to go back. It was useless.

Melvin sighed with relief, visibly letting his shoulders drop. "Yes, very happy. I only wanted to make sure we were not taking home an imposter and leaving you somewhere in need of rescue. I'd hate myself for allowing you to be hurt more than you already are because we didn't check to make sure first." He rose up and with Horace's help, they took Jan back to the base.
For the rest of the day, it seemed they would not be doing much scouting. Horace tended to Jan and Melvin made sure to keep watch in case anything happened, and offered the clothes he would have worn tomorrow (freshly cleaned of course) to help the man out. True, Melvin did not like the idea of wearing the same pair of clothes twice in a row, but Jan was far more important.
The rest of the day was long and quiet until another group of bugs rose up much like the day before, rising from the horizon to swarm past them. He watched them, sure they would finally act, but once again they passed by without so much as landing anywhere near them.
Whatever they were doing, it seemed the base was on their route there.
Melvin looked for a good hour in the direction they vanished before coming inside for a drink, a quick ration, and to go back to looking back outside.

Once they got back to camp, Lawr borrowed what clothes he could from the others and declared his intention to report back to base with what he had seen. He did not much fancy the idea of staying in the sahara with the knowledge there were monsters theoretically slinking around which resembled him. It seemed about time to get out of there, by his estimation and he made his excuses, gave Horace a long hug and departed back to the HQ, wishing both of them well in their endeavours.

Horace was sad to see Jan leave, but he had to report back. They could've gone with, but somehow he got the vague feeling that Melvin was searching for something. So, Horace stayed and he hugged Jan goodbye as though he could imprint the other man within his arms. ------------ The next morning, he stretched and waited for Melvin. They had to go about together now - it made sense, considering Jan's experience. Sighing, Horace lifted a hand to shield his eyes. He was going to have sand everywhere for weeks. It would be nice to be deeply, truly clean again. He blinked. Something black hurtled towards the camp. Immediately, he yelled for Melvin. Quote: 31 - 60: Horsemen appear and attack your camp or patrol group. ((These can be either player character horseman you invite to battle (which will make your base RP points PVP points and worth 2 instead of 1 rp point) or you can battle against an automob who you will be able to possibly capture.)) Horseman AutoMob (clan/appearance/name are your choice, though do follow the horseman guidelines for such) HP: 60 Auto Damage: 5 Special: Should you bring their HP to either 0 exactly or 1, then you may viably capture them and bring them back to Deus. (Bonus Pay: $3000) otherwise they simply escape or dissipate.

Melvin did not want Jan to leave and to instead listen to more of the details of his fall and how he wound up naked, but at a point even he had to surrender to the idea that Jan and Rin were in danger here and in no further condition to continue. He had already lost Jan once and the panic he had felt in seeing him missing for even that morning had been enough to leave him feeling shaken and off kilter.
Once Jan left, the base seemed a lot bigger, a lot emptier, and the party of two a lost weaker. Whatever had happened to Jan might in some way happen to them, but at least they still had a set of clothes each (even if they had once been worn the first day they arrived).
The day went without much of a hitch and the night came and went. Melvin had been inside the tent, working on counting their dwindling supplies and trying to estimate how long they could continue past their expected days when he heard Horace call out to him.
Rushing out with Saliva at the read, he barely saw what was coming only that it was coming at them. The blast of what seemed to black bugs came at them, and he was hit by a small swarm as he jumped to the side. "What is that?" he asked, aiming and firing a shot. It was coming closer and closer but with the blazing sun, he had to wait for it to near.

"Horseman," he said grimly. The thing chittered and hissed as it came at them, all bugs and torn cloth and gleaming bones. It was disgusting. Horace dropped into a grounded stance, waiting for it. The insects bit at his exposed arms, but he didn't move, just watched the way it hurtled towards them jerkily, like a balloon pushed along by differing winds. An evil balloon. Horace almost laughed at the thought, but then it was there. Dark cloth was wrapped around a face that was mostly human, but Horace could see the bones in its arm, the missing chunk of flesh from its cheek. He launched himself forward, burying his tekkos where the thing's stomach should be. A small cloud of buzzing gnats erupted from the cloth. The horseman hissed in either pain or irritation and reached out to swipe his hooked blade at Horace. The rusty metal barely missed him and he circled the thing, trying to stay out of Melvin's way, too. HP: 35/40 Damage: 6 Charge: 1/3 Horsemen Hp: 52

"Think it's a scout? Was wondering with all the bugs if we'd seen something." Though he expected a group. Then again, they probably only sent one to deal with just 3 hunters. This one at least seemed well trained in that it kept managing to hit him, swiping a boney claw his way that cut his desert camo shirt across the chest.
Wincing, he was at least close enough to shoot right back at it and got a straight, clean shot.
"Tell me if you're feeling low. I can heal."

He struck out again, catching the horseman as it whirled towards Melvin. "That's right - only look at me," he muttered. Melvin was ranged and didn't need something chasing after him. As Melvin spoke, Horace only spared him a glance, eyes intent on the enemy. The other hunter was probably right. It being a scout only made Horace want to deal with it more, before it could lead others to them.
"Me too, incidentally." Two healing charges would make up for not having a moon along, maybe. The horseman executed a neat stop=thrust, sending his blade into Horace's shield and he grunted in pain.

Melvin started to step back and circle around the horsemen and Horace, making sure to look for an opening.
"Guess no big attacks from us, but at least we won't go down that easily." He said, aiming again and hitting the thing in the back. It whipped around to throw another ball of bugs at him. Turning, it hit his shoulder and then dispersed in a mass of small gnats.
"I hate famine horsemen!" At least none of them got in his mouth.

He was never going to get clean from this mission. He moved and his fists caught only cloth and sand and nothing solid. Horace's momentum sent him stumbling and the horseman smiled, sliding his sword down Horace's back.

When the horsemen turned down to stab, Melvin's shot only nicked his back.
"Be careful!" He squeaked, not liking the look of a blade coming at Horace. For a moment, his heart jumped up his throat and he felt his breathing getting short.
A moment then turned into a lingering minute and then he felt panic rush into his system.
He and Horace were the only ones here against a Horsemen. What if -
He took deep, DEEP breaths.

The bugs were thicker around the horseman; Horace could feel them crawling through his hair with their many, many legs. He was glad, for a moment, that his phobias did not include spiders. For some reason, he didn't feel the normal urgency of a fight. He heard Jannisari hiss in his mind, to hit, to break skin, bone, discover what the horseman's insides looked like outside. Later, he knew, they would go over every hit he had taken, every opportunity missed.
For now, he concentrated, moved precisely. One hand grabbing hold of the cloth, yanking the horseman to him, the second fist swung around to catch it in the head. It spat at him: sand and saliva, before bringing up it's own leg to catch him in the side of the knee. Cursing, he let go.
"'Bout halfway, Melvin. " Jannisari lit with a charge. HP: 20/40 Damage: 5 Charge: 2/3
