Maua could tell by Kivuli's surprised look that he had expected her to give her typical sarcastic remarks - it somewhat amused her that she had surprised him. Despite all of this she had to keep him on his toes right? "Berries sound lovely." well as long as they were ripe and sweet and not mushy and sour..although even if they were surely they would be better then the nasty dried grass they had been forced to eat a few times on their journey. Wretched lands.
"And we can get a better look at the land while we travel there, it was somewhat hard to tell how things are with how late we got here last night." The mare expressed. I mean the cave they had found wasn't perfet but it wasn't the worst an if the land held up...well she was tired and maybe this was a good place to stop at least for a little while. They would have to see.

Kivuli nodded as Maua spoke. She may not had said it outright, but he got the distinct impression that she was thinking about staying here, that the idea of traveling another day, week or month, was out of the question. And it was true, they hadn't seem much of the land when they arrived since it had been dark, so perhaps they would find it promising enough to settle here. It would be nice to have a permanent place to call home again - though perhaps it would take some time before they accepted it as "home" and not just a place they were staying, but it was something to look forward to.
Kivuli nuzzled her softly and then began to lead the way out of the cave. "The berries aren't far." He assured her and stepped into the sunlight, taking a deep breath of the fresh morning air. The area looked pretty nice to him, everything was lush, there was the cheerful call of birds in the distance and he remembered there being a water source not far away either. He could point all of these positives out to Maua but didn't bother, she needed to discover them on her own and gauge in her own way whether they were good or not. So he did the only thing he could do at the moment, and led the way to the berry bushes.

Maua returned her mates nuzzle and then followed him out of the cave and into the sunlight. Lifting her head she took a good look around, it had been hard to see in the darkness and he had not appreciated the lush vegetation while stomping through it in the middle of the night tired as all heck..but it was kind of pretty now that she was rested and the sun was shining. It looked like the area would have enough food to support them and the cave could probably be made into a respectable home with some more work.
Maybe.
She would, of course, keep such ideas to herself for now, no point in getting Kivuli's hopes up only to dash them once she spotted a terrible glaring flaw somewhere down the road, which had happened in the past. "Good, perhaps we can take a walk afterwards, just kind of check things out." she suggested as they moved down the trail, the lure of berries made her pick up her pace slightly although she didn't outright hurry - rushing about like that was hardly a suitable action for a Soquili of her station after all.

Kivuli nodded to her words. The way she said it, will it gave the stallion a small bit of hope and he latched onto it. It would be nice to stop their constant travel and settle down. If they could find a good spot they could built a nice home and perhaps with time, it would become nearly as nice, if not as nice, as where they had lived before. "That would be a good idea." He agreed. The land certainly looking quite a bit different than what it had last night, and if the immediate area was any indication of the rest, this would be a very nice spot.
Maua's hastened steps encouraged him and he led her happily to the berry bushes. Upon arriving, he stopped and gave her a slight bow. "Your breakfast, my lady." The berries looked nice and plump, but not so plump that they may be overripe.

Giving Kivuli a warm look at his gentlemanly gesture Maua turned her attention to the berries, there were certainly quite a few of them, a whole little thicket of the bushes actually which was kind of nice, it meant - if they decided to stay - that they would be able to harvest them every year. Of course it also might draw in predators like bears..but by the looks of how many berries were still on the bushes it didn't seem like this area was highly populated by such creatures.
Still, she would keep an eye out for any signs. Nosing several of the berry clumps she carefully selected a couple to start off with, they were sweet and juicy and quite delicious, a good step ahead of the dried grass and worn foliage they had been scavenging as they traveled. "They are quite good." Maua stated her approval with a warm look to Kivuli after she had finished chewing

The fact that she liked the berries was very good. It was one step closer to agreeing to stay here. But he knew berries along would not sway her, and even he wasn't entirely sure what the area had to offer. They would just have to take the opportunity today to look around, see what resources were available, how good the land was, if there were any predators about (though not say anything about that or Maua would insist on leaving right now), and then hopefully they could put an end to their constant traveling and search for a new home. So far, what little he had seen, was promising. The land was lush, and just this one patch of berries could keep them and whatever other animals lived here supplies for several weeks. They could even pick some to save for the winter months.
That was another thing to consider, if they did remain here, was making sure they had enough food and water available once the snows began to fall. For right now though, he focused on the berries. Grabbing a few he chewed them thoughtfully. "You are right, they are good." The perfect balance between sweet and tart. "If I remember correctly from last night, there is either a pond or stream not too far from here." He hadn't been able to tell for certain last night as it was just a little too dark to see perfectly, but they could find out once they finished with the berries. He took another mouthful and enjoyed the taste. So much different from their diet of grass for the last few weeks.

Maua took another mouthful of berries, considering as she chewed, she was fairly certain she had heard some water last night as they arrived, though it had been to dark to actually see if said water was any good...the fact that they had heard it was a good sign though, moving water was always safer then still water. "I do recall hearing the sound of water as we arrived." She agreed with a thoughtful tone. "I expect we should go and find that next, we can't stay without water." She mentioned with a slight sigh, the last place that they had found promising had been spoiled by this very fact..the area had been lovely and food had been abundant but the water had been murky and small, certainly it hadn't looked safe and she had had the feeling it would dry up in the warmer seasons. Hopefully this one would be better.
"I don't recall exactly how far away it was but I think your right, I don't think its very far." She agreed Kivuli would know of course, he was much better at directions and distances then she was.

Kivuli nodded, knowing she was right. Water was an extremely important factor to consider when choosing a new place to live. They had found a really nice spot not that long ago, and he was certain that Maua was thinking of it now, how it had everything - except a reliable source of water. If this place did indeed have a good stream or pond that they could drink from, then it would be one more reason to stay here, instead of continuing on with their search.
"Well, let's see just how far it is." He told her cheerfully and the cast his gaze about, gathering his bearings for a moment. Though he had only heard it and caught a glimpse of it at night, he knew the way to go after just a moments searching. "This way." Pulling away from the cluster of berry bushes he led her down a trail that was, he believed, the same one they had traveled on last night or one that ran parallel to it.

Pulling herself away from the berries with one last mouthful Maua trotted after Kivuli. The path they were following was fairly pleasant, shaded, clear - all in all it was a good sign, I mean water and food were great but if it was a pain to get from one to the other then they were sort of moot right? Of course she still had to see this water they had heard - there was really no point in getting her hopes up if the water turned out to be terrible. Really it was unwise to get your hopes up at all Maua had found - they had tried several location so far and everytime she started to get attached to one of them they would discover something wrong with them.
"I think I hear it up ahead." She told Kivuli as they walked down the sun dapple pathway, pricking her ears to make sure she was completely convinced that she did in fact hear it "Yes that has to be it!" And as much as she tried she still couldn't help the slight bit of excitement in her voice.

Kivuli smiled at his mate. He had heard the water too, but hearing the excitement in her voice over hearing it ahead was a good sign. Now they still needed to see whether the water was clean or not. Usually running water was clean, but there were some small rivers that they had seen during their travels with less than perfect water in them. Brown water was not something one drank unless it was the only option, and even then it wasn't the best choice. "I do believe you are right." He told her and hurried a bit to see what it looked like.
Coming out of the trees, Kivuli was greeted with the sight of a decently sized river. And it had clean looking water. The river wasn't too wide, nor deep, so they could cross it if needed. "Looks good but..." He needed to make sure. Stepping forward Kivuli first took a sniff of the water and then took a small sip. It was definitely clean and refreshingly cool. "It's good. Try some." In the end, it required Maua's approval, but he couldn't imagine her finding anything wrong with the water...then again, Maua could be extremely picky.

Maua watched as Kivuli tested out the water, at first glance it didn't look bad but she waited for him to check it out before approaching herself and eyeing it critically. She could see the bottom which was nice..nothing was worse then murky water - except perhaps poisonous water of course, but then murky muddy water might as well be poison for all the goo it would do them. Certainly she wouldn't drink it.
Luckily this water seemed to be free of such problems and Maua leaned down to take a very very small sip to try it out - it wasn't as good as the crystal clear spring fed water the had had back home but it wasn't bad..it was actually quite good, clear, cool and refreshing just a Kivuli had said.
'It is good" she agreed "Certainly it is another point in this place's favor"

With Maua's approval of the water, they were one step closer to staying here. So far they had found food and a clean source of water. The cave they stayed in last night way plenty big, but would certainly need some work to get it comfortable enough to call home - but that they could work on over time. No matter where they decided to stay, it would take time and some work to get it up to standards. And without access to lower ranking individuals, like the ones they had in the herd, the work would fall to them - well mostly Kivuli, but Maua would help, by telling him what they needed.
"Perhaps we stumbled into paradise." Okay, maybe calling this place paradise might be a bit of a stretch, but it was certainly shaping up to be a nice place. Casting his gaze along the river Kivuli surveyed it's banks. "I see plenty of reeds growing here. I know they can be woven together for baskets and other things." While he had never done it himself, he had watched some of the herd members do so, so perhaps he could pull something off.

Maua followed Kivuli's gaze down the river, the reeds did look quite similar to the ones they had used back home. "Well I'm not sure if it's paradise persay...but perhaps it is paradise in the making for us." She allowed. It was certainly the best place they had found in their travels so far and she was getting so tired of traveling. Yes this place would do and with a bit of work she was sure they could bring it up to standard.
"If we can find some ferns and perhaps some moss it would make some nice bedding." She mused and she doubted it would be overly difficult to find either of those in this environment, this seemed like just the sort of place such plants would grow in. "And if we weave those baskets with the reeds we can collect some berries to dry, it will be best to make sure we are well prepared for this first winter here - since we don't know what it will be like.

Kivuli leaned over and nuzzled his mate. With each new thing they discovered about this place, they were one step closer to finally settling down and rebuilding their lives. And of course having just the right home was the key point of that, and Kivuli was certain that this was the spot. Even Maua was showing signs that this place was ideal. "We will shape it for our needs and before you know it, this place will be paradise." He was confident about that. Sure it would take a lot of work, and being noble born neither of them were used to such a thing, but Kivuli was determined to give Maua the best that he could, and if that meant working to get there, then he would endure that.
"There were some ferns closer to the cave, and I'm certain we can find more if we keep looking. Moss should be easy enough to find as well. A reed blanket on top of all of that, and we will have quite the luxurious bed." And then he caught what she last said and a wide grin grew on his lips. Maua talking about gathering and drying berries for the winter meant she had surely made up her mind. "So we are staying then?" He had to ask, just to make sure, but already he was thinking about all the things they would need to build, collect and find to make it all work, especially to make it thought the winter.

Maua was loathe to actually agree one hundred percent about staying, I mean what if something came along and ruined things? It ad happened before and the look of disappointment on Kivuli's face when it happened had been heartbreaking...even though she knew she had been right to insist that they move on again at the time. But even knowing deep in her heart that she had been right did not mean that she wanted to see it happen again...but the glimmer of hope in his voice was contagious and taking a few moments to really truly think about it Maua did not feel the stirring of unease or longing that she had felt in those other places.
Perhaps she really was just tired of traveling..or perhaps this would turn out to be the place they had been hunting for..in any case it seemed that they would indeed be staying and she nodded her head with a sigh "I suppose" She cautioned "I mean..we can't travel all winter as it is we will be hard pressed to gather enough before the weather turns. This place will do." She stated firmly and unlike some of the other places they had cautiously tried out she refrained from adding the ominous 'for now', she supposed that it was probably a good sign that she didn't even really feel like saying it, that had to mean something right?
