"That's, yeah, maybe naive," Noah agreed. "I'm in Life and I still know that there's only a couple of fridges it's safe to leave your lunch in and if you didn't make your own coffee you might be a frog for a few hours -- oof," he finished as Horace elbowed him, but this time he was more ready for it; he brought Laz down hard on the offending arm.

BETTER, Laz allowed.

He hissed as Laz sliced along his shield. Horace jerked his arm back; he'd be feeling that hit after the spar. By pure coincidence, the blades along his tekko skimmed Noah's wrist lightly - a glancing blow.

"You make it sound more and more like y'all are just... mad scientists or something. And here people had told me Death was full of crazy." He shrugged, grinning and feeling his shield pull around him. "No division left behind, I guess."

"Well, yeah, kinda. Ow," Noah scooted back a few steps and out of range temporarily. "There's kind of a lot of mad scientist types? The Doctor doesn't exactly discourage it either."

Laz? he asked silently.

TOOK YOU LONG ENOUGH. The light of Laz's runes flared, dripped, and extended itself to wrap and ooze across Noah's arm, accompanied by the sensation of a wet, cold, slimy tongue dragged across Noah's wrist. The rush of healing Fear soothed the aches of the fight, but Noah shuddered a little anyway. He still wasn't used to that.

"I dunno why I keep expecting to find mostly sane people on this island - I mean, everyone was willing to give their lives up to fight monsters. so..." He shrugged. "The doctor?" He echoed Jannisari. She had, of course, hissed a thin line of curiosity into his mind. Anyone with such a title was inherently better. He moved forward reading to strike, and missed entirely as Laz's runes began to glow. It meant a charge was used and Horace hoped it wouldn't hurt too much - he tensed.

And... nothing. "A... healing thing?" he asked. surprise threading in his voice.

Noah shrugged. "I'm mostly sane, but maybe I just think I'm mostly sane," he said. "The Doctor, Dr. H, he's the head of Life division, he's, like, a genius but also kind of terrifying. He created the pods and also the current weaponization method."

He nodded to the question. "Feels like he licks my hand," he answered, and his expression suggested he wasn't completely thrilled by the experience. He moved in for a quick, cautious swing, barely more than a graze.

Horace wondered what Dr. H was working on now. If he created the pods and the weaponization system, if he were a genius - people like that didn't tend to take breaks from braining. Interesting. But it wasn't as though Horace could just show up and pick his brain. He'd heard that you needed to have something good for Dr. H before even thinking of approaching.

"Have you met Dr. H? I have not met my division head yet, though I hear it's not a bad thing."

He looked at Noah as if he could see the dog slobber dripping off of him. "Eugh, phantom dog slobber." Horace made a face of disgust. "No offense, Laz. Whatever Dr. Jannisari does feel like electricity running through my body. Kind of hurts, but not in a bad way." She'd had a charge for some time now, but he didn't like using it in spars. preferring to lose rather than drag something out. Unless the spar was really, truly interesting. Or if he was fighting someone clearly out of his league. Distractedly, he lunged forward, towards Noah, but missed entirely.

"Only at the division meeting," Noah answered. "I don't, my project doesn't need me to ask him for stuff and I'm not anywhere near having enough results to put together a report that he might be interested in, and anyway I'm only a trainee and mostly I do the crappy work that the specialists don't want to waste their time on, so I don't go try and see him, and I haven't had to be called up, that' a good thing."

"No, it's kind of gross," he agreed, "he thinks gross is a compliment." He jumped aside as Horace lunged, reflexively swiping at the other man, but missing just as widely. "Is yours a healing charge too? Or something weird?" He'd heard about other charges that affected or enhanced the hunter, but he hadn't seen any of them in action.

Horace yelped as Noah swung, even though it missed entirely. His fist skimmed over the other hunter's arm and he shuffled quickly back. "Ehhhh, only a trainee. You've got plans and ideas and a way to eventually implement them - that's great! Doing grunt work is part of the beginning. Though, I don't really have a... a thing." He rubbed the side of his head, hand tilting easily to avoid clipping his own ear with his weapon. "Or any idea - feel pretty floaty about in my division." He shrugged. It was, quite honestly, something that bothered him deeply, but Horace understood he was new, understood that he had time. It still made him uneasy. He wanted to be more than a meat shield, top do something to deserve everything that had come to him.

"Yeah, healing. But I don't feel like using it yet. And Dr. Jannisari says I don't really need it. She's very conscientious about timing." He paused ad began to circle Noah warily. "Saw a guy throw a fireball once - boy was I glad he missed."

"Uh huh. I'll get a promotion mission when they think I'm ready. I don't mind the work, you gotta work to learn what you're doing and what you're going to be doing." Noah shrugged one shoulder. "Better than hauling horse crap." He flexed the arm Horace's fist had skimmed across, testing the feel of it and concluding that it didn't hurt enough to worry about. "I heard you don't get a lot of directions in Death," he ventured.

He mirrored the careful circling, waiting for Horace's next move. "Laz doesn't like me to stay at low shield too long. If I don't use his charge he gets pissy. Who's got a fireball?"

"I've met two hunters that used fire... Neither were really a fire ball, technically speaking. Jordan - he's sun - made his big-a** hammer explode into flames. Pretty dramamtic. And America, moon - her heal is actually kind of painful, but it engulfs you in fire. It looked like a bird." Horace still didn't like America, but as a hunter, she was good, conscientious. She was a natural leader and it showed. Jordan was too.

Horace hummed for a second, considering his options. He feinted right, then darted left and brought his fist around in a wide hook. For a moment, he debated trying to sweep him, but the window passed and he tried to get out of range of the nasty looking cleaver that was Laz.

"Yeah, we don't get a lot of hands-on direction - I've not really had any specific assignments, yet. But I'm also not very good yet, so..." He shrugged.

"Suns and Moons hit hard," Noah opined. He ducked the wrong way and got a squarely placed punch to the face; it made him stagger back, though he managed to lash out and slice along Horace's arm as the other man moved away.

He shook his head a little and circled sideways. "But you'd get better practice if you got to observe or, like, do gruntwork," he said.

He hissed in a sharp breath as Laz slashed at him again. "Wish I hit like a Sun - it'd make me better company on missions." His smile was a little rueful as he dealt Noah a glancing blow to his shoulder.

"I've done some grunt work, I guess - fetch quests. But mainly, I read. I read everything." Horace smiled. He read and he remembered and maybe one day it would all be useful;. "Most of the time feels like you can't exactly ask for work. Especially not Caelius. Not good enough as a trainee to do things, really."

"That's only taking fighting into account," Noah pointed out. "I mean, there's other parts of missions too, collecting data and observations, that's important," and he let the hit to his shoulder push him back a step, then turned back to bring Laz up in a quick chop to Horace's arm.

He nodded a little. "I hear Caelius is pretty scary, he stabbed -- uh, someone I know just for not paying attention for a minute."

Noah's hits came in small nicks and slices - a slow chipping away at his shield. This was not a spar Horace felt he could learn much from, merely a test of endurance. Of course, it still hurt whenever Laz sliced out. "Shiiiit." He paused and cocked his head to one side. "Your friend? Are they death division? I've been trying to meet a bunch of guys in my division, so I might know him." He went through a mental tally of death division, trying to eliminate possibilities one by one, but came to no concrete conclusion.

Shrugging, Horace lunged forward, swung wide and then stopped. "You know... uh, as fun as sparring is, Noah, if it's alright with you, I would really rather just talk to you." His fists dropped to his sides and he shrugged. "I'd like to hear more about your agriculture project and maybe you can tell me some of those awful jokes Laz tells you." Horace grinned.

"Um." There was no reason to avoid names, it wasn't like Horace would know that anything was weird unless Noah made things weird, so if he acted like nothing was weird maybe it wouldn't be. "Yeah, um, his name's Al, maybe you know him." Noah's smile felt slightly forced.

The change of subject, once again, was a welcome one. "Sure," he said, and lowered Laz, though he didn't desummon just yet, just in case this was a trick to get him to lower his guard. "Um, I can show you the experimental plot if you're actually interested. I'm, um, I'm sure Laz will share some jokes, maybe they'll even be funny."

Laz growled. MY JOKES ARE FUNNY.
