robot kitten i like where this is going. x3 i feel like learning to be quiet and wait for things is an important lesson for vodyanoi, lol. <3 “Yeah,” Vodyanoi nodded. “I’d like to learn that, making traps I mean. And I could teach you! If we meet again, I mean.” He shrugged sheepishly -- was it rude to offer to teach something to someone older than you? He didn’t know how these gray-skinned people felt about that sort of thing.
But the man didn’t seem particularly offended by this; he dropped out of the tree that he had climbed and handed the prentice some lengths of cut vines. Vodyanoi took a few moments to get these sorted in his arms (hopefully without tangling them up… that might be embarrassing) and jogged to catch up with the other. He was talking about the place he had come from, and the boy wanted to listen. He’d only heard rumors about Jauhar before, and rumors in the time of war always seemed sort of… unreliable.
“You live in the trees?” He asked, wide-eyed. “Are there lots of dangerous beasts? How big do they get? Do they ever… you know… try to eat you?”
He followed after the other, asking another hundred such questions, to the point that what silence had been gained by having him remove his decorations was soon lost under his excited chatter.

Stereochrome it is a lesson Rayolun learned before he could really talk XD Next post will have him show Vody more about traps! "If we meet again, I'll take you up on that." Rayolun said with a lopsided smile. He did hope to meet the boy again and learn that... especially since he loved the sea so much and was planning on living there since the jungle had too many memories. "Well, if it's traps you probably don't need to be quiet... but I find it best to stay silent anyways. That way you don't alert any animals that you've set a trap or attract a predator." He chuckleda t the questions; "Oh yes... all sorts of things try to eat us. The Menzuri, large crystalline bugs with a nasty temper and too many legs to attack you with, are one of the more dangerous. Then there's the Wadana that burrow beneath the ground and strike when you step on them.. or are stupid enough to sleep on the ground. That is one of the main reasons we live in the trees. There predators tend to live below the canopy and at least among the leaves there's light. Below, even at non, the ground is very dim and only some crystalline growths give off light to see by. The trees there are huge, so be can safely build houses on the branches and use the branches as roads almost. There's always the danger of falling.. but with all the branches between you and the ground, you'll probably not fall to far." And if you did... well that was an entirely different set of problems. "From what I've seen here, you've got your fair share of predators.. but nothing that's tried to attack me so far. Have you been here long enough to be able to identify those? What the names are and their habits?" He asked curiously, he'd seen some and wanted to know about them... especially that odd shelled then with those vivid colors. He finally found what he was looking for; a place that had tracks across it but it was within the brush.

robot kitten it will help Vodyanoi later... but not for hunting reasons. 8D although i do want to make him more competent in hunting and sourcing food, so i'm glad he's getting the experience! Vodyanoi had been doing a lot of sleeping on the ground as of late, so the new knowledge that this was not something one did in Jauhar seemed entirely strange to him. What was the ground for, it not for walking across and sleeping on? But the idea of creatures that burrowed from underneath and attacked you certainly made the whole idea sound somewhat reasonable. He just hoped he remembered that, if he ever came to visit the jungle…
“Um… I kinda just stay away from anything that looks big enough to eat me, I guess -- like the snapptrotters and the drow. And, uh, yaotls of course. But I’m not actually sure how dangerous any of them are, they’re just… scaly and such. I’m not used to all these scaly things, there weren’t any back in Oba, and anyway it wasn’t like I saw a lot of wildlife in the house where I worked. The bushi aren’t so scaly, and I wasn’t afraid of them at first because they were so slow-looking and silly, but then someone told me they were poisonous.”
He grinned sheepishly. He probably wasn’t making much of a positive impression on this stranger, was he?
“Um, you should probably ask someone who’s lived here longer. I don’t want you to think we’re all clueless here, or something. You could probably find a youngling who knows more than me… I’m really just learning all this now.”
At that point, however, the man had stopped walking, and Vodyanoi came to a stop beside him as well. They were looking at… well, some scraggly growths in the sand. The prentice kept quiet this time, and looked up at the other for some explanation.

Stereochrome And that makes 2 prp's at 10 posts for Vody! "At least you are cautious." Rayolun chuckled softly. "My.. brother was not. He wanted to go hunting the most dangerous beast in Jauhur when he was still and apprentice! Caution is to be encouraged and will save you one day." He never did understand other men (and women too) who felt they had something to prove.. hunting was really to get food not gain prestige! Courting danger just to say you could was... fool hardy at best and a down right bloody stupid way to die at worst. He waved away the others apology; "I will eventually find others who can tell me more about this land.. if I do not find out what these beast you named are myself. I have run into shifters who've lived their whole life in Aurthur and still do not understand all the dangers. You are as new here as me.. it is to be expected you are not knowledgeable." He crouched down and pointed toe ht tracks. "A beast has come through here.. and if you look off to the side you can find more. That makes this area well traveled through..and a perfect spot for a trap. When placing traps you need an area to hide it in, like these bushes, and tracks about so you know animals will walk into your trap. I find placing it beneath plants that bear fruit is best." He slowly demonstrated how to tie a snare and how to place it so it'd trigger once something with enough weight walked through it.

robot kitten yay! ow o i'm cool to continue this one a bit... until they catch something? xD “Oh.” Vodyanoi looked up at the mention of a careless brother. “Did he get hurt, doing all those crazy things?”
“I guess some people just hunt for sport and glory… my masters did that, in Oba. It wasn’t like they needed to, they could afford to purchase the best things in the market! I like it better this way, hunting and fishing just to get by. You know, you take just what you need and… give thanks for it? They have a lot of rituals and songs here, to thank the gods of the oceans and feasts. I like those songs.”
The shifter was kneeling now, pointing out tracks, and Vodyanoi kneeled on the sandy soil beside him. There was, in fact, a set of animal tracks -- he could see them now. Then he sat back to watch the other put together a thing called a snare (he’d always liked watching people work with their hands, especially if they knew what to do) and set it in place between some bushes, where it could hardly be seen.
“And now, how long do we wait?”

"Not when I was there." He smiled and shook his head... that Menzuri encounter had been a close one... and since he only ever saw Gerraden every now and then he did not know if his adopted brother had been badly hurt... though he'd be willing to bet that Ger had! "But I believe he has gotten hurt before... Especially since he wields a sword and swords are... ineffective for hunting. His mouth twisted in disgust when Vodyanoi described his masters. "Wasteful and useless... I hate it when people kill for fun or glory...." He whispered, his eyes darkening for a second before he shook his head and pushed the thoughts away. "I do believe my people have songs to the gods as well... I grew up alone in the jungle so other than the few tales my uncle told me I do not know of these things." The more he got out and talked with other people, Rayolun had realized he' knew so little... Especially about his own people. When the boy asked how long, Raylon chuckled softly. "Depends on your luck. Sometimes minutes.. sometimes days. That's why you set up a series of traps and check them once a day or week depending. Trap lines we call them. Fishing is often faster though I get tired of fish after a while..." He looked around. The area looked like it saw a lot of animal traffic and not very much earthling traffic... perfect for trapping! Perhaps Serin would smile upon them and food would be caught soon? "While we wait would you like to learn to fish? I can make a simple fishing spear if you wish. And teach yo how to make other types of traps?"

robot kitten wrapping this up as well 'cause this butt needs to grow up! 8B He was surprised to hear that the Shifter did not know much about his people’s songs or traditions -- he had thought that he was the only one who was so ignorant about his own culture, the only one wandering around with no knowledge of tides, or winds, or traps, or… anything.
Maybe it made him feel a bit better, to know that he was not alone -- and to see that although he did not know some things. the older Shifter was quite skilled in others.
They left behind the snare-trap and walked instead towards the water, where Rayolun (whose name Vodyanoi finally remembered to ask for) carved a spear out of a branch and showed him how to properly hold the thing. Vodyanoi took a decent attempt at spearing something, but couldn’t quite figure out the refractive effects of the water and came just a few inches short on several occasions… that would take some practice, he supposed. His timing seemed to be good, on the other hand. Rayolun caught a few fish with little trouble, and soon enough they had a growing little pile beside them.
Just then there was a loud yelp from the foliage, coming from around there they had left their snare. The two exchanged glances.
“That didn’t sound like an animal.” Vodyanoi finally said, and they dashed back to see what exactly they had caught.
It turned out to be a rather startled-looking youngling, spooked but otherwise unharmed. He was on the verge of throwing a bit of a tantrum, but Vodyanoi gave him two of the fish they had caught, and he skipped off with a huge grin.
“Well, it worked.” Vodyanoi giggled. “I guess we know that much!”
